The economy really wasn't backsliding. Inflation had been coming down steadily and pretty dramatically over the two years prior to the election and jobs were still really robust. Who would've come out? Not sure. Probably Newsom, who may have won, may not have but with a real primary process and a normal election calendar in place certainly would've had a better shot than Harris.

Of course not, but we're a country of morons, and the exit polling indicated that the perception of the economy was the prevailing reason why independents broke for Trump like they did.

Also I don't think Newsome had a realistic chance of winning the primary. He just didn't have enough money or time in his corner. We'll see if he can even win this next one with the benefit of 4 years to build his brand.
