Was anyone in here super pro-Platner? He was an interesting story because of his background and the fact that Schumer's lack of endorsement seemed to actually give him a boost in the race, but I'm pretty sure the tattoo was a hard stop for everyone in here. But admittedly I haven't been on as much recently. Hell @Bill has been calling him out from day 1 before most of us knew F all about him.

The thing with Platner is that he's a very specific type of guy that growing up in a rural area you can pinpoint who he is.

The tattoo in and of itself should have been an immediate dis-qualifier. I do not at all buy that he just thought it "looked cool", especially from a self-proclaimed WWII buff. Even at best, getting that would show that he is a complete and total drunken idiot. At worst, is, well, very bad.

Going with the at best scenario, he is a grown up alcoholic rich kid who is a complete a-hole and makes idiotic decisions, which is not at all preferable.

I think the problem with the far left is that they have a noble savage view of the blue collar working man, and Platner was "blue collar" with his oyster farm (that was bought for him by his parents), and that tattoo incident was just "the roughness around the edges that blue collar men have", which it wasn't, because the far left base is downwardly mobile middle class kids who got a college degree and moved to the city, and the only interaction they have with the working class is when their building super fixes their leaky faucet.

At the end of the day it's downwardly mobile middle class millennials being lead around by champagne socialist rich kids (like Mamdani and AOC), and nobody there "gets" working class Americans.

That whole thing with the tattoo made me peg him as a drunken POS, which it's now coming out that he very obviously is.

Perhaps its for the best and they can replace him with someone good. However it should be painfully obvious that whether this woman was raped or not, she waited until after he won the primary to come out with this as a coordinated political move in conjunction with the republicans. I mean if he was really the monster she claims he is, why not go public with this when he first announced his candidacy?

If the GOP were behind this, they would have waited until it was too late for him to be replaced. Doing it now makes clear the Republicans had nothing to do with it.

Maybe you and I have a different definition of rich. She grew up in a small house in a suburb. Don’t know much about the NY suburbs but plenty of people live in small houses in upscale suburbs of Atlanta that aren’t by any means rich.

Growing up in financial security and comfort is a long way from rich.

It's certainly a different experience than many children of blue collar parents.

That said, plenty of blue collar workers make their way to comfortable upper middle class neighborhoods.

I have no idea how you know her dad's salary. It's not public record and he died 20 years ago. But her mom cleaned houses and drove a bus at one point. I've known a lot of rich people and none of them ever cleaned houses and drove a bus.

More to the point, I really don't care about AOC or the DSA, I just think the notion that these socialists are all rich elites is silly, considering the background and upbringing of most in Washington.

I said it in the post you quoted: going off available stats for when she grew up. There's available salary survey results for that time. It's not hard to approximate.

It's actually completely impossible to approximate. Everyone's financial situation is different. The guy built a business, who knows how much debt he was in, whether he had loans, whether he had overextended. We know he had a terminal disease. I can tell you based on family experience, a cancer diagnosis usually drags on for years and years, and we know that by the time he died, his wife was in debt and their house went into foreclosure. Again, the assumption that AOC grew up rich isn't backed up at all.
