However, if there is an argument that they work, this is not the way. First, they totally made up the tariff rates they claimed the other night. Second, if they are going to work, they need to be to applied to specific markets, not across the board crap like this. So GFY and STFU. I'm also reticent about tariffs. But most of the world has been sticking to the U.S. but good for the better part of the past 50 years on the tariff front. We've effectively been subsidizing the world economy and bought in to cheap goods from China big time. Probably the bigger risk here is a trade war turning into a hot war - especially with China. I do suspect that most of the nations on the world will be reaching out to the administration and working out adjustments to level the playing field.

Most of the world has not been "sticking it to us,” but there is no use in having this conversation if you can not admit that the tariff numbers thay Trump gave us the other night we’re totally BS. I really DGAF about the 50 counties desperate enough to try and make a deal with their extortionist, I’m more concerned about the way he has alienated our friends and closest trading partners.
April 6Apr 6 One thing I don’t see pointed out is, in spite of MAGAts yelling about bringing back manufacturing jobs, we already have a shortage of manufacturing and skilled trade labor. The "they’re eating the dogs” Haitians immigrated to that town specifically because there were a ton of manufacturing and distribution jobs that were unfulfilled. They’re like the commies who think they’re going to be poet laureate of the commune, only they think they’re going to manage the factory.

Remember the last time Trump was President, and he threatened tariffs against Canada and Mexico to get them to negotiate a new trade agreement with him because NAFTA was so unfair. And then they made a new trade agreement that Trump proclaimed was Soooooo much better than NAFTA and all the MAGA people were like "see? tariffs work!” And yet here we are again, with Trump levying tariffs against Canada and Mexico (among other countries). Soooo…… what happened? Was Trump lying then or is he lying now?

How is it that all of you are so economically illiterate? Like it's kind of fascinating how not a single one of you understands what a tariff is or how it works.

MAGAs: "other countries with significantly less economic prosperity than us pinch themselves in the dick! What should we do to respond?” Trump: "let’s punch ourselves in the dick too!” MAGAs: "Let’s punch ourselves in the dick too!”

You have a fifth-grade understanding of the U.S. economy. This is how we elected someone like Trump and why we’re doomed as a country.

I was just thinking about this when some MAGA talking head claimed manufacturing jobs would come roaring back. My area has a pretty solid manufacturing base, granted it is nowhere near what it was in our hay day, but we don’t feel the same economic pinch as bad as other parts of the country. Anyway, to your point, many of these companies pay very good, but can’t find enough workers. We have an aluminum mill where entry level production personnel, fork lift drivers, can start at around $80k/yr, and can nearly double that with in 5-6 years. Skilled trades make much more yet they are constantly hiring and can’t keep their positions filled.
April 6Apr 6 Let’s be honest, there are good manufacturing jobs, but a lot of them suck. The one that pops into my head is when I helped my friend move into a house in a maquiladora. It was next to a cement block factory. There’s a reason that factory was on the Mexican side of the border…

The money is there people just don’t want to go get it. Trade school doesn’t take that long and it’s not that expensive, and right off the bay you’re making more money than new college grads or even new airline pilots. And then even if a college grad starts making more than you, you didn’t have student loans to pay off.
