  • Some quick thoughts on "Liberation Day," also known as "Liquidation Day." Obviously, these tariffs are way beyond anything the market expected. I think very little of Trump and the administration

Burr's bit on this is great

I posted this before but it’s worth repeating. The show they are taking about is hilarious. It really hits home for those of us who are in our "drop dead years!”

You guys can ridicule about Velcro shoes all you want, but slip-ins are the sheet.  My steal toe work boots are the only shoes I bend down to tie anymore. Eff that sheet.

Its even crazier bc trump put tariffs on china the first time so it shouldn't be a surprise the second time around. Its not like he was importing from india and it was a complete surprise.

Those have laces, so diehard would have to spend a good 4-6 hrs trying to figure out that riddle.

He can have his husband tie them for him and he’ll never have to tie them again. My wife tied mine for me. 😎

The Art of the Deal

Don't you see what is wrong? It may end up being the same deal that used to exist,  that we withdrew from.  But it certainly won't have the word "trans" in it this time around.

On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that an entry code in the U.S. system for American ships to use to have their freight exempted from tariffs isn’t working, and "the issue is being reviewed.” As a result, no tariffs are being collected by the U.S. government for the time being.

U.S. shippers told the news outlet that they have not been charged higher tariff rates on their containers as recently as Thursday, despite Trump’s claims that tariffs are in effect and are being collected. This latest snafu is on top of the fact that many companies and industry groups are still unsure of when tariffs will be collected, especially since Trump keeps changing the rates erratically in social media posts and executive orders, and making new threats almost daily.

Survey on Smerconish today.  Surprised by results, especially if they’re union jobs.

It's really not all that surprising. The unemployment rate is 4% and there's already something like 12 unfilled jobs for every 10 people. We literally have more jobs than people as it is. That plus the fact that we are a consumer based economy, not to mention the world's largest economy, is exactly why these erratic tariff policies are so mind-numbingly stupid. All it does is incentivize trade partners to seek refuge elsewhere. The economic equivalent of cutting off our nose to spite our face.

How can you continue being a consumer based economy, and the largest economy in the world, when you don't produce anything?

Oh cool, is this the part where I have to explain to you what gdp is, just like when I had to explain how compounding interest works?

We still produce plenty of stuff that requires more skilled workers. What makes you think people will be lining up to sew shoes together for minimum wage? There is a reason why there are several apartment complexes in my area that used to be shoe factories.

There is also this thing called the service industry.

I thought you were supposed to be finding where I called someone a commie 7 years ago?  What happened to that?

And yes, long term, explain how we continue to be a consumer economy, and the largest in the world, if we continue to produce less and less material goods?  What does that look like to you?

Oh right, because increasing the production of material goods is the only way for our economy to continue its growth. I guess if you can't touch it or hold it, then it can't be real. Software, IT, financial services, digital entertainment, etc, those are all fake and paid for with monopoly money.

I mean, I get it, when you're born and raised in a state known more for incest than education, it makes sense that you would have such an infantile understanding of economics and math. Probably the same reason that would result in someone being so embarrassingly stupid to put these words in this order:

How can you continue being a consumer based economy, and the largest economy in the world, when you don't produce anything?
