  • Some quick thoughts on "Liberation Day," also known as "Liquidation Day." Obviously, these tariffs are way beyond anything the market expected. I think very little of Trump and the administration

Their entire business model was to exploit the under $800 import exemption to tariffs. Between closing that loophole and the ridiculously high tariffs now imposed on China I don't know how either of these companies survive.

There's plenty of demand for cheap chinese goods elsewhere, especially in developing countries. I'd be shocked if this is what killed them.

Moment of silence for all those Etsy businesses.

They ship direct from China to avoid the tarriffs, which is what makes them uber cheap. Now that they can't avoid the tariff anymore, and they tariffs are astronomical, the question is why wouldn't you just buy the same cheap goods from Amazon.

Are we assuming the goods from Amazon also don't come from China? Things are going to shoot up all over the place. Kind of just have to wait a few weeks/months to let the dust settle. Americans really are in for a shock if they thought 9% inflation was painful.

No, that's my point. Why buy from an obscure Chinese e-tailer and wait for overseas shipping if there is no price difference for the same goods on Amazon.

The point I was making is that the same tariffs might apply to the same product on Amazon. I don't know. To answer your question, yeah, if the Amazon product is close in price then people will order from them. It has zero impact on me since I have never purchased anything on Temu/Shein.

The issue here really has nothing to do with the tariffs, they will increase prices for the same goods across the board. The change was that Trump closed the loophole that allowed companies like Temu to avoid tariffs by shipping small value orders direct from China. So now, the business model of a Temu or Shein is completely pointless.

So, yes, the tariffs will be the same, and yes, the cost of Chinese goods will go up universally. The difference is Amazon will inventory it within 100 miles of your house and ship it to you in 2 days. So, why would you buy and wait for shipping all the way from China if the cost of the product is the same?

Moreover, the price of the good won't be the same because Temu will have to include individual, international shipping cost to each order. So, in all likelihood...Amazon will be cheaper on the unit price too.

Not to mention customer service, tracking, returns, etc. You get the point.

Oh I definitely get the point if all your assumptions are correct regarding pricing. That's the part we'll all be keeping an eye on.

a guy i know who flips houses said lumber is up 50% thanks to the tariffs which is getting passed on the eventual buyer.

is this the america is getting rich off of the tariffs part that trump was bragging about?
