April 9, 20251 yr All of you Trumptards need to read this before you start posting about how we shouldn't import goods from overseas.... Friedman makes the point that if we didn't turn "globalist" literally every other developed economy in the world would anyway and we would not be able to compete. Now we are reverse engineering it. All of the world's other developed economies won't rely more heavily on the US for trade. They will rely more heavily on each other and we will be left in the dust. This policy is literally retarded. The only bright side is, we won't be having republicans in charge any time soon after the colossal F up.

So if China hit Taiwan two years ago and we engaged with them do you think they'd still be shipping essential drugs to us? What's the plan then? Sorry about your heart meds we didn't plan ahead. Can you hold off on that infection while we find other sources for antibiotics?

In response to 2/3 of brand name and 80% of generic I literally said no more than 50% of essentials should be. Honestly, I'd prefer that at 80%. Things that don't keep people alive or fight infections can be made wherever.

April 9, 20251 yr 2 minutes ago, Gannan said: And you think these tariffs will fix that? Do I have that right? Not talking about tariffs. Simply a statement that our country (both parties) should have never allowed it to get to that point and it needs to be corrected. It's complicated, but one I see as a national security issue. Things that don't keep people alive or fight infections can be made wherever. We should have the capacity to not rely on other countries for those things.

These across the board tariffs are much larger than the pharmaceutical supply chain, so I have honestly no idea what you are getting at. This was put out by the first Trump administration to try to address the problem back then... Like DOGE failure, there are ways to strategically address national security concerns instead of taking a chainsaw to the entire system of global trade. At all. Simple a statement that both parties kiss the ass of pharmaceuticals and we never should have gotten to the point where we are that reliant on other counties for life saving drugs.
