Is that what just happened because a lot of people are saying it? He tanked the market, crapped his pants, and then reversed course.

Make this a competition between the world's 2 largest economy for access to markets around the world. Try and cut as many deals as they can with Europe, Asia and South America. Basically, the winners become every other country as the US and China compete to create trading blocks. That would really improve the position of the other countries and the result would be a weaker US as China will come out relatively much better now given Trump's reckless couple of months which has created a lot of anti American sentiment.
April 9, 2025Apr 9 So listening to some reporting, even from a fanboy like Gasparino, it's really becoming very clear that the spike in yields was the catalyst for Bessent to take this over and get Trump to back down. There's just no way they possibly anticipated higher yields from this, and getting yields down is Bessent's north star. Whether it was Japan selling or basis trades unwinding, they couldn't risk a 5% 10 year.

Based on that quick press conference, it seems clear that he convinced Trump to pivot. So they will play this as Trump hit the global economy with a bat to shake things up and spur conversations -- MAGA will eat that up, and sane people will realize it's a cover story (because it was so remarkably reckless). But Bessent is in charge, for now. And that's a very good thing. Hopefully we don't see Lutnick or Navarro again. I know you weren't in the room but you are very good at reading the tea leaves. When Bessent met with Trump, did he use hand puppets to explain it in a way that he could understand?

I have negotiated a new beautiful trade agreement with Canada and Mexico that is totally fair to the US and will be great for us! You're welcome America! Have made this point repeatedly - he will get minor concessions, declare it as a big win and the sheep will rejoice and hail him as the greatest president to ever live

So we have to ask again, what is the success for the tariffs? I'm starting to think you're going to change your stance. Is it still thousands of manufacturing jobs in the US?
