Nick Sirianni looks legitimately happy at this press conference.

they ended last year as possibly the worst team in the league. They began this year looking like they can beat anyone in the league if they clean up mistakes, and possibly, even if they dont clean up mistakes.

Its a night to be happy.

Now, I really hope that this year, they figure out how to clean up those mistakes.

Sheldon Brown was better than ok. Really good, sound all around player and durable. Plus, he’d occasionally wear a cool mask during introductions.

I should be clear here, that I'm comparing how people originally looked at Lito Sheppard vs Sheldon Brown. Lito was the flashy guy that had ball skills that couldn't stay healthy, Brown was the sound, relatively low key player that was above all else, reliable, with the exception to the 'low key' being when he hit people. He wasn't known for picking off the ball or things like that, he was known for playing solid, fundamental football for his position,  being in the right place, and adding a little extra with his big hits.

You can probably see what I mean when I explain it like this.

3 big concerns coming into this season:

1. Why did they collapse and did they fix it? Tonight they showed some gut at the end offensively and defense stepped up when called upon. Both were up and down.

2. Will Hurts shine like an MVP with the immense talent around him? Up and down but needs to fix the turnovers ASAP. He struggles to read defenses still it seems and doesn’t have a good feel for what he’s looking at. He looked fast in TC and slow tonight until the last drive. It’s almost as if he’s jogging and not running. Idk how to explain it.

3. Pass rush (biggest concern). We are entirely relying on Nolan + Huff and both were terrible tonight. Was it the field? Maybe. But they didn’t stand out in camp and neither is a proven every down player. TEs were eating Nolan’s lunch 1v1 and Huff was a ghost. If they don’t step up we’re square and fairly Fd. Let’s pray it was poor footing ala SB field against Chiefs. Still - not holding my breath. I want Reddick back or something. We could be a solid pass rush away from being legit SB contenders.

Hey did Huff play?

No

I'm with @eagle45 on our next game.

It's our real home opener. The Falcons are worse on offense and defense than the Packers. No excuses.

He wasn't really tested against the blitz outside of one or two plays. Need to see more there.

He actually had a great pass to (I think AJ) against an unlocked defender on his back.

Players with 15+ tackles and 2+ sacks in game -- since 1987

Patrick Willis (2007)
Vincent Rey (2013)
Roquan Smith (2019)

They were playing to get to the sneak instead. Don't like that mindset

If the almost $40M RB can't get the first down then why'd you give him the contract

Right, but playing to the sneak has a lot more to do with stupidity than it being a bad play. Other team use the sneak without making it their entire arsenal, and we can do the same. And similarly, it has a high success rate, so might as well use it. Saves Barkley a little tread anyway, and we know he can be fragile.

Would you say he was a zero out there?

Exactly 1-0 and I think Nussmeir and Moore will address mistakes more than the guys last year. At least I choose to believe that

It’s obvious the entire "can’t wear green down there” was completely overblown - likely "clickbait” material that some seemed to fall for.

Green Bay wore green, 3/4 of the stadium was wearing green and there were Eagles and Packers fans running around that town all week long wearing green.

Absolutely.  I think there was a shred of truth to it in that the Eagles were the home team and they didn’t want the Eagles wearing green, the color of their biggest rival.  But not for a safety issue or anything that scandalous.

The playing surface was a major screw up.  The nfl (and both teams) probably should have done some more research on it.  Was it the first time this exact surface was laid down?  Something specific for this game?

This is where you go full prime Belichik.  Ask them to lay down a 20’ x 20’ replica of it 2 months in advance and send some amateur, but sophisticated and trusted athletes down there with your training staff to go run on it so you start the game with the right cleats rather than changing them 2x during the game.

Might be time to retire the tush push or at least limit it to every so often. Just seemed like it’s not going to be the same.

I especially hate using it on third down. Even if it works, you're only getting a yard. If you run a regular play you might get a lot more than that. You can always default to it on fourth down if needed.

they should force his eyes to stay open with toothpicks and make him stare at the ipad that he doesnt want to see when he makes mistakes.

"Well, Hurts didn’t look good but we won and scored points” has already gotten old to me.  At some point, it’s going to get old for everyone if he doesn’t start looking good.

The second interception bothers me more than the other two turnovers. Because the play right before that, he nearly threw a pick 6 on a bad decision. So knowing that you made a poor decision and got away with it, you have to be more conscientious after that he can’t make a bad decision. We have to get 3 points at minimum to extend it to 8. And instead, the very next play he throws that pass and gets picked off.

The thing that bothered me in the first half of season last year was he’d play like 2022 Jalen hurts then he’d have turnovers and poor decisions. It felt like you didn’t know what hurts you were getting from possession to possession. His first 7 games he had 8 ints and 2 fumbles. So 10 turnovers in total.  they were able to win but he was turning the ball over at an alarming rate. I’m hoping week 2 he has less turnovers. If we clean that up this game is really not as close as it had to be.

I was pretty surprised that the Packers didn’t do more zero blitzing early on.

Ive only been to 1 professional soccer game. Phila Union a few moths ago. That grass is cut extremely short, and they have build in sprinklers what water it before, and during breaks in the game to keep it slick. Players can really slide quite a distance, like penguins on ice.  And you see them constantly taking divots out of the field.

Tonight's field played exactly like a soccer field.

It may be the exact mix of turf, and natural grass the eagles use. But I suspect the roots werent as deep, the blades were cut shorter, the soil was softer, and the surface was watered to make it slick. No doubt the Brazilians prepared it as they would for a soccer game not realizing the different demands of a football field.

All of this. You just can’t throw a pick there in that spot.

He gets in a mode where he decides to force things to happen and unnecessarily so.   If he stops that and just throws incomplete he'd be much better off.

Ok so what’s rumor on White not flying with the team?  Wasn’t Rodgers ruled out before they left and still went?  How badly is he going to melt down if Baun and Dean don’t let go of those jobs?

Yeah. I won’t kill him for the missed tackle, although I don’t know that it was necessarily a tough play. Overall, he was pretty good.

It is when you're trying to chase that down from the backside against someone with Reed's speed.

We’ll agree to disagree there.

This improved team (and coaching staff) played well enough to beat a top 10 team but Hurts did not look good enough to go to a super bowl. Let’s hope it was the lack of preseason play.

Oh, he’s pouting for sure. This is history repeating itself.

We'll see about the Reed thing. Like I said though, where was McLeod at the same time in his career?

To you? I think he's very good slot player. I think it's really clear he's quite good there, he's even better at bringing people down from even than from downhill. And yes, I very much agree on Justin Simmons. I kind of was on the same train if they moved Gardner-Johnson to slot like reasonable people would do, but I wasn't on board with the narrative that they should do that and sit Blankenship. Gotta actually let guys develop.

It doesn’t matter where mcleod was at this stage cause he wasn’t in Philly at that stage. When we got him he was a good starter. At this stage Blankenship isn’t as good as mcleod and i don’t think it’s close. That doesn’t mean Blankenship can’t get there. Again i think eagles fans criminally underrate mcleod.

And Carter is looking as good as Cox in his prime.
