the real shame is that as a running QB, he is probably last in the league at throwing outside the pocket. Feels like 95% of the time he rolls out, he wont find anyone open and throws it away or takes a dumb sack. Or turns it over.

Running QBs should be good at throwing on the run.

Hurts has a weak arm.  It doesn’t mean he won’t be a multi MVP, SB, HOF QB.  And if he steps into the throw, he can make just about all the throws (as can 31 other starting QB’s and about 25 2nd and 3rd string QBs).  But if he doesn’t have a base and is on the move, then he’s going to float the football.  He simply doesn’t have the arm strength to do otherwise.  So every throw he makes on the move will either be a floater to a wide open WR that is perceived as a good throw or a duck that the defender gets to make a play on.

Hurts’ chances for success are based on his ability to step unto decisive throws from the pocket.  It’s ironically outside of his comfort zone, but he’s done it well before.

I like the PHLY podcast. I know Bo isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and I still think daily podcasts is overkill in general, but they provide a variety of some days just Bo/Zach and some other days with Fran or someone else.

The only days I mostly skip is Deniz because I have no idea why he’s on the show other than being Bo’s Twitter friend. I guess they added him for a season ticket holder or fans perspective but the dude smells his own farts daily.

I listen because I like Bo’s opinions and perspective on football and Zach doesn’t delve into hyperbole. Unfortunately I have to fast forward through so much of the show because of Bo’s nonsense rants and tiresome jokes that interrupt the show’s flow, and frankly, I don’t care about their games. Deniz was fine as a one-time guest. Not sure why he is recurring, but I guess they have a lot of shows to fill.

No Solak is a big loss. BLG being relegated to guest star is a bummer. Sheil and EJ Smith are boring, but him and his film reviews with Sayed is pretty good. Losing Fran and Cosell on the same pod is a bummer, but Fran off the leash is a good thing.

All in all, I think we’re exiting a golden era of Eagles football podcasts, and now there’s just a lot of mid ones.

I didn’t say it at the time but I thought it was funny the Inside the Birds "gameday pod” spent a few minutes talking about how Isiah Rodgers should be good to go (pod dropped Friday morning, Rodgers was declared out Thursday morning) and then Caplan spent a minute saying the Eagles were playing in Spain.

They have managed to drop off more than usual.

Yeah, I only listen to them when I’m out of pods and don’t feel like listening to music in the car. They were see to offer something, but now they’ve buried (I assume) those nuggets behind a patreon paywall. I’m stunned anyone would pay for their work.

Sheil and BLG have been good. BLG has been appearing on there as a guest since Solak is gone. I can't listen to the Shawn Syed pods though. As much as I like football, once the game is over, by Tuesday I'm already thinking about the next game. I don't want to listen to breakdowns of a game now 2 or 3 days old on Tuesday or Wednesday. I've already moved on and no longer care.

I like Fran's addition, but PHLY doesn't really add anything other than the day after the game and the day before the game. Which is probably why they decided to give Bo and Zach a break and announced today that they aren't going to be doing shows on Wednesdays anymore. It was overkill. But I think Deniz will be joining them every Friday.

Probably getting greedy going to a 4 legger now. But, its 5 dollars that I won last week. I withdrew the other $94.

The encouraging thing with Hurts on Friday is that he ranked #1 in QB rating against the blitz in week one. That was a big question coming into this season from last and they passed with flying colors. He was decisive, made the throws, and absorbed hits. And that's as much credit to Moore for getting that right off the bat in their first game. But a lot of that is Hurts seeing his first read and committing to it. He starts to go astray when the first read isn't open and flushes from the pocket. I still don't understand what these guys work on for a scramble drill. In so many other games you'll see the QB flushed from the pocket and a receiver comes back to the play, goes to the open zone, or sits down for his QB to find him.

I don't know if thats a Hurts issue or the receivers just running around clueless when the play breaks down. Maybe someone who has done an All-22 breakdown has dove into that more. But it was a problem all last year and it was a problem Friday night again. It feels like one of three things happens when Hurts gets flushed: He hits the homerun play like he did to Olamide last year in the Buffalo game, he throws it away, or it's a catastrophe like the throw to AJ on Friday.

It’s not the wide receivers, IMO.  Hurts isn’t a scrambling QB; he’s a running QB.  Roger Staubach and Fran Tarkenton were scrambling QBs, and more recently a prime Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes now.  Those QBs dodged rushing D-linemen to extend plays, to give their receivers time to come open.  Hurts runs around or past rushing D-linemen with the immediate intention of carrying the ball.

The scramble drill is designed to break the receiver open taking advantage of additional time.  Hurts doesn’t keep his eyes downfield long enough for a scramble drill to work.  Hurts is more like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, but Lamar is a more dynamic runner, while my perception is Josh Allen’s cannon arm gives him greater ability to throw off-script and off-platform.

Anyone else come across this idiot on CAPS OFF? He’s a Niners fan and my god what rubbish he speaks!

Lovely job I’d definitely take that! When was the last time we had a comfortable W? Miami last year?

Probably the Tampa game in week 3. The Miami game shows a 14 point win, but the game was tight throughout with them tying the game on Hurts’ pick 6 and they were again driving for the tying score before Slay picked off Tua near the goal line. We also beat Tampa by 14, but they were never in that game and if I recall, we got the ball with around 10 minutes to play and actually ran out the clock.

I mean I felt the Miami game was a very controlled one but yeah perhaps not a comfortable one as such. So yeah I mean it’s been nearly a year and a lot of close games.

I'm curious how much man we play against the Falcons. Kirk Cousins can't move, so we don't need zones for scrambles. They have bigger WRs and we have bigger CBs. It's an easy way to put a LB/S in rat coverage too to prevent Cousins from spamming the middle of the field.

We couldn't play man against GB because of the slippery field.

Ojomo with a sack.

I saw some discussion on how Ojomo's development is making it easier for the Eagles to move on from Milton Williams. If Ojomo can develop more as a pass rusher, he can easily make Williams more expendable. With the Eagles tight on cap next season, this is the kind of player development they need to happen.

I think it's becoming more apparent that they need Milton Williams. WIlliams is an ascending player. If anything you move Jordan Davis in a trade next year and extend Williams.

Can Milton actually rush the passer then?

That's just dumb. Why?

Williams hasn't developed as a pass rusher as much as the team needs. They need someone next to carter that can help generate interior pressure.

Davis is a space occupier.  The question is how many snaps he can do that for.  At this point, the question of whether or not Davis can generate pressure has been answered.  He can’t and won’t.

The presented solution to replace Davis, who cant generate interior pressure, is to pay someone more money that has also shown they can't rush the passer.

The actual question is, is Ojomo able to develop enough of a pass rush to make Williams expendable?

The detail is good, but Sayed's neurotic delivery is borderline unlistenable.

He doesn't have a weak arm, that's Minshew, he has an average arm.

Can make all the throws with his feet set, but doesn't have the arm to make off platform difficult throws (neither does Mahomes for that matter, his talent is making accurate throws off platform from various arm angles). But how often does a QB actually make those throws in a game? It's nice to throw 60 yards on the fly, but it's just as effective to consistently throw 10 yards to the receiver's hands, in stride and let him rack up YAC.

Good QBs are consistently good, Favre made more "wow" throws than Montana or Brady, but which QB would you take?

This might be the first truly pro passing game Hurts has played in his life, I'll give him half a season to see if he can master Moore's scheme.

Everyone focuses on star receivers, but what makes a QB's life easy in the NFL is a scheme that gets one or two targets open every play and doesn't depend on a star beating double coverage on a regular basis. I thiink that's going to be the difference under Moore, if moving the ball means throwing to Calcaterra ten times a game, so be it.

I think they need him at the moment, but he doesn't seem the type of guy that stands out and makes that many plays. He's a good rotational DL but nothing more.

Only managed 0.5 a sack last year and 6 in the 2 years previously. Is that really an ascending player?
