Well, this was the argument against extending him to huge money….More than the "he can’t win in cold weather or against good teams” arguments.

Could there possibly be anything in the contract that protects the Dolphins?  Maybe there’s a clause in there someplace about early retirement due to injury.  Who knows? I’m just wondering

There’s almost always something put in place to void guarantees and allow teams to recoup signing or other bonus money if the team wants to. It’s pretty standard and I’d imagine Dolphins aren’t that dumb to not to. The "guaranteed for injury only” could get tricky. Off the top of my head I have no idea if his deal included that but players usually push for that, and Tua and his agent aren’t that dumb to not to.

Did he call it a dynamic protocol?

Man I really feel for Tua. If he ends up taking another concussion or two his future quality of life is going to seriously be compromised, if it isn't already.

NFL would be irresponsible to let Tua play again this year. With the focus on player safety they can’t risk the PR nightmare of another concussion for him.

Also, idk if that helmet pad thing would’ve prevented this. I’d have to rewatch but didn’t seem like it.

I found Tom Brady's senior prom picture. Apparently, he didn't hit his growth spurt until college.

Nope.  But I’ve never been to a Buffalo Wild Wings, so that doesn’t surprise me.

I don't disagree but If he passes the concussion protocol it's up to him and the NFL can't tell him he can't play. Also, nothing was preventing that as it wasn't even that hard of a hit. Tua like other athletes who have had a few concussions start getting them easier and easier.

Either that or his date was bigger than Jordan Davis

It’s the Dolphins, so I wouldn’t have been that shocked if he returned in the 4th quarter in a closer game

What is the contractual/legal scenario if they tell Tua to retire versus him wanting to play? Who has the authority?

You can't tell someone to retire.

Yep. It's a shame but he needs to be done.

The team doctor has the authority, and the scenario depends entirely on how his contract with the Dolphins is structured.

It’s spelled out in the CBA but it would be a battle between Neuropsychiatrists.

Tua absolutely has to hang em up. I feel for the guy, truly, but he's gotta stop. It's not worth it. Take your money, recover and find a job with a network or coaching some day if that's what you want to do.

I don't think it would from the NFLPA's side, and I think Tua would struggle to find one to support him on his own.

If you remember there was a big hoopla around whether Tua had a concussion or not in 2022 v the Bills which ended with the Neurologist that cleared him to play next game getting fired (Tua went on to suffer an indisputable concussion in that next game).  Maybe he can find a guy close to the end of his career who'll argue for him to continue for dollars, but the science around repeated concussions is pretty clear and I'd be surprised if he could find a respected guy to argue that 3 clear (possibly 4) doesn't present a material risk to his future neurological health and cognitive functions.

Gainwell with a TD

There used to be a lot of talk about a 3 concussion rule in a season. And i forget but maybe like 5 in a career. But there's no rule and no evidence to back that up.

Current best practice is basically just an individualized approach. A discussion between the player,  and his doctors. Weighing symptoms and risks vs reward.

There is no rule that says he needs to retire.  There is no medical evidence that states x number of concussions is the limit. So the decision largely is Tuas alone to make as he is guided through a decision making process with his doctors.

With all that said,  if a team is uncomfortable they can choose not to play him. You saw it with Eddy Curry in the NBA when he had HCM. Eventually became a free agent and basically no one wanted to sign him and take that risk that he died on their court.

Yea, basically. They did it last year too but did it once a week. I guess because Sterns isn’t close to practicing that’s why they are doing it daily.

That's how we lost Christian Elliss right?
