Eagles need to go DE with their first 2 picks in next year's draft

One thing that I think I see, but others would know better, is that Carter is getting himself way out of position on run plays. It's like he gets baited by lineman into attacking because he's always rushing the passer, and they run right into the gap he vacates. That's bad coaching, IMO.

I mentioned- putting pieces together- Carter didnt start last night (why?), Sweat said the DL isnt on the same page and they need to rush together. Putting the pieces together, I suspect Carter was disciplined for performance because he is freelancing.

The Eagles season kinda hinges on the next two games. Not literally, but it really kinda does.

What I mean by that isn't that 1-3 means you have no chance to make the playoffs. But what I mean is a true contender would find a way to win one of the next two games. In the Reid era in their contending years, the Eagles would always find a way to stop the bleeding and pull one of these games out. If they just get trounced the next two weeks, I think we can very fairly not take them seriously as a true contender and probably not even a playoff team.

Because at that point dating back to last year we'd be 2-9 in the last 11 games.

Eagles need to get a TE of the future in here next year too. Goedert just ain't it. His breakout season isn't coming and he's almost 30. He'll probably be here next year because his contract has been tapped out with restructures but they need to have someone to groom for 2026.

I got laughed at for saying this the last 2 years with TE talent up and down the draft boards. Goedert is never going to break out. They should have drafted Isaiah Likely but instead decided to sit out half the draft.

Yeah, I didn't know if it was a missing curfew type thing, or more about his play. He's just getting abused in the run game.

They get a win before TB curb stomps them

If you guys think the starters playing 20-25 preseason snaps is fixing this, you’re fooling yourself.

I don't think any one thinks that.   But, they leave a LOT of reps on the table.   There's the PS snaps they don't get.  Then there is the fact that we know that they have very short practices, shorter even than the minimal allowed time now.    The organization as a whole seems to be ok with just not putting in the level of work that's needed and this is the result.

If you get 90 minutes of practice time on a given day, and you normally only use 75 minutes (or less at times) that's something that adds up over the long run.

I assumed it was a team meeting or a curfew thing. But then after the quote from Sweat I started thinking it might be performance related.

I do appreciate that at least they are showing their true colors early in the season. No need to get emotionally invested. I will come in for a game this year (auction thing), but other than that, this is going back to 2021 for me. Stress free viewing as I expect nothing.

My only hope for the defense, and it's not a guarantee that it fixes things, is I hope they aren't stubborn in continuing to play the same guys. Booker played great last night so reward him with more snaps. I think Milton Williams has more of a future on this team than Jordan Davis does, so get him into the rotation more. Begin to ween DeJean into Maddox's role because Maddox won't stay healthy all year. If Slay continues to regress, get Ringo or Rodgers in there and see if either of them can be the future CB opposite Mitchell. If Huff and Sweat continue to be complete zeros, let Hunt get more action. Make it a complete meritocracy instead of keeping guys in based on their draft position or contract.

We all know Howie would have something to say about that. Agreed about Milton Williams.  I’m tired of hearing that he doesn’t play the same position as Davis.  He should be taking his snaps.

Yep, my expectations are gone now.  They might win the division or they might finish 8-8 but they aren't making a deep run.

Well its week 2, and there are 3 issues to be addressed. Unfortunately all 3 are nuclear options. There is no easy fix for this team to become a serious contender this year.

1. The team needs a new HC. Even if the new HC is just a CEO coach... ESPECIALLY if the HC is just a CEO head coach, there are a lot of things this team should be doing better even just from a CEO standpoint.

2. The team needs a new DC with an entirely different defensive system.

3. The team needs a real QB.

      - On this point since there will be plenty of pushback in here about it- There are a lot of people in that stadium last night who are doubting Hurts, vocally, in no uncertain terms. This  blog is probably one of the last places in the philly sports universe where Jalen will be defended as much as he is. I wasnt just sitting by stupid fans either. I was sitting next to a  guy whos son is a DB coach for the Falcons.

Even if you are right, #3 is not possible given the contract. Unless you want to start Pickett.

Derek Carr is already sniffing himself and the Eagles (hopefully) show some pride .... although last time Carr played the Eagles defense, didn't he complete 18 passes in a row?

Bonus -- Carter sack, Gainwell TD

Folks on here want to fire Sirianni because Kellen Moore calls a pass play on 3rd and 3, yet a lot of the same folks have no problem with Jalen Hurts floating another INT on a terrible throw into coverage, when what was needed was a mere 15 yards -- with 20+ seconds and timeouts left to do it.

Either Moore or Sirianni likely yelled at Hurts "could you at least try to throw to the white guy?", so Hurts peppers Covey with targets while still ignoring Goedert.

I wanted to fire Nick before the 2024 season even started

no I know... I am aware. And I dont think the team is wise enough to move on already even if they could. Im not even going to fool myself in to thinking theyll take their earliest out. Because they wont. Theyll give him a year or 2 with the new coaching staff before finally giving up. And by that point, he wont even have much value left in a trade.

The other sad thing is that I know if they did go nuclear and bench Hurts, theyre going to go to Pickett.

I know people are going to tell me Hurts was not THE reason we lost last night, and that may be true. But I still believe McKee probably leads the eagles to a double digit victory in that game.  Its the NFL. Defenses give up points. The offense (especially the level of talent on ours) has to be able to score points consistently. Barkley exits the field in the red zone, and the offense bogs down because Hurts cant pass it down there. And things even feel like a struggle earlier in the drive because he doesnt spread the ball around like he should be. McKee would have crushed that Falcons team last night with the weapons we had available. Goedert would be involved. Dotson would be involved. And Smith would have been over 100 yards with 2 TDs.

I can't think of a head coach who will get better results unless he can get better decision making from the franchise QB without a plus arm, and legs that will depreciate rapidly as he approaches 30.

22 minutes ago, Alphagrand said:

This is such a dumb, useless narrative.  What does Dan Campbell do?  What does Mike Tomlin do?  What does John Harbaugh do?  Not every coach is an architect of play design, nor do they have to be.

Sirianni's biggest problem is the QB who cannot/will not buy into the offensive scheme.  Get him the best OL, get him two WR1s, get him a WR3, I guess they'll have to find a TE Hurts will look at, get him a bellcow RB, go ahead and get 10 All Pros and get Sean McVay to head coach and Kyle Shanahan as OC -- you'll still be left with a QB who makes poor decisions and decides he needs to carry the football on every big down so that he can be nursing an injury before the playoffs again.

You'll get your wish by 2025; Sirianni will be gone.  You're never going to witness 2022 Hurts again, though.  Keep that in mind.

You're misunderstanding me. I don't have a problem with a HC who doesn't call plays. But you said am I expecting Siri to micromanage the coordinators? In your argument, Siri should not communicate with his coordinators at all during the game? He sits back and lets them do whatever? I said it's a collaboration.

Moore said that in the offseason Siri was not even in the offensive meetings very much. He said he popped in at times. Last year Nick swore it was his offense. Then he said Moore would install an offense that utilizes things they've done in the past plus what he brings with him. That's actually fine.

But my point is, the head coach is still responsible for everything that happens. He goes over the game plan and strategy with each coach during the week. On game day he should be analyzing what's happening and speaking with his coordinators if there are adjustments to be made. If there are basic things we see as fans that are problems, that's what the head coach should be addressing.

This is a continuation of the collapse of last season, where we all saw the problems and Nick did absolutely nothing to change it.

It wouldn't have made sense last night, because Hurts wasn't the problem. But if he is having a bad game in NO on Sunday, maybe the play is pulling him and putting in Pickett (can't go to McKee as the emergency 3rd QB unless the first 2 guys are hurt). Kind of what Andy did with McNabb in the Baltimore game in 2008; the whole team was trash, but Andy sent a message that even the QB could be benched. The 2008 Eagles caught fire after that. Sirianni has to do something to shake these guys up. Another option -- bench Slay for Ringo.
