All-22, OL play, First half.

First thing I noticed was that Mailata pulled to the right on a screen pass to the left. Breaking the key concept. Usually, when he or Lane pulls it's to lead a Power run to the other side. The LB or safety tends to follow the puller. This time it got him leaning.

Dickerson and Calcaterra ran a version of the counter-trey. Calcaterra got himself killed on the play. The man simply can't block a lick. No wonder they've activated Stoll.

Jurgens ran a number of Powers. What we called fold blocks in days of yore. The guard blocks down and the center pulls behind him and leads the RB into the A gap on the other side of the center. He did it behind both Becton and Dickerson.

NO ran a triple blitz on one play.

All three of those guys on the right side blitzed. Lane is good but he can't block three guys. Hurts had no chance. Goedert is the hot read but he hadn't turned around before the blitz got home.

Hurts made a bad read on an RO:

22555599_2024-09-26(1).thumb.png.9c828bff336211377ada4326f48b8f4d.png

He should give it to Saqoun because the DE , his read, is focused on him, but he kept and lost a yard. Then again, perhaps he was supposed to keep it, because it was exactly the same action that occurred on Saquon's 65-yard TD run. Which goes to an earlier discussion of play design.

It looks like a bad read by Hurts because Becton looks like he can easily get to the 2nd level.  Barkley would have had a decent chance of scoring if Hurts had handed it off.

Of course he failed at OT with the Jets.  Missing two full years out of four is fai.lure.  Then his stats stunk..  God forbid he ever plays OT for the Eagles.  Hurts will be dead.

He fought his way back onto the field in 2023 but he struggled immensely out there. Last year, the 24-year-old was second in the NFL in penalties (18) and was tied for first in sacks allowed (12). Per PFF, Becton finished with a measly 53.2 overall grade and a 56.3 run-blocking grade.

I always read with intense interest when a blogger is using PFF scores to prove his point.

We could get a campaign going to show our support for him. Something like "Let's go Brandon!"

The funny thing about that was the post this summer of BG on a boat being cheered by Eagles fans and the gal holding a midnight green sign with Eagles logo that said "Let’s Go Brandon”.  Damn near spit out my drink when I saw that.

Apparently there are NIL contracts and UNLV’s position is there wasn’t one.  The QB argues there was in essence an oral contract.  Classic oral contract issue.   UNLV will say there was no promise.  The QB will argue that there was and it was reasonable to conclude the assistant coach was empowered to make such an offer.  Would not be surprised if UNLV argues that the QB’s agent was familiar with the need for a written contract.  Wouldn’t be surprised if the assistant coach argues that what he stated was they could get some NIL money and suggested it might be as high as $100,000.  Typical oral contract arguments of he said/he heard.   Problem with the case for the QB is as old as oral contract cases.   The party seeking to enforce a contract must prove its terms and conditions.  The QB can prove performance of his obligation under the oral contract pretty easily.  But terms, not so much.  So he is using the leverage he has by withdrawing his performance.  UNLV has offered NIL money, just not what the QB seeks.  My bet is they work out a solution before the next game because each side has risk.

PA is a statutory employer state.  But to benefit from that status, there must be a signed contract between the parties at the time of injury. (Probably only you and I know what that means.)  I would never perform an obligation on an oral contract because it is such a hard thing to prove up the terms and conditions of such a contract.

But the original poster suggestion that the QB has put forth a roadmap for NIL negotiations in season while retaining his eligibility should negotiations fail.  Best move he had.

(Yeah, I miss contract law a bit since my retirement but not enough to go back to it.)

I think the NCAA rules still prohibit direct payments from the schools.  So the NIL money comes from boosters.  It sounds like to me that a lot of the University Boosters havet the coaches offering the money and making the deals.  The problem of the paperwork is the timing issue. Because the transfer portal is a short time, I think there are a fair amount of handshake deals to get players to transfer.  The transfer portal this Spring also coincided with the Court case that ultimately struck down the NCAA's pay for play rule.

There's an attorney that I work with that represents 2 college players that transferred, in part, because of NIL deals.  One of them met with Alabama and Saban just  before he retired.  Saban told him that he would not discuss the money part of it.  Presumably, that would have been a separate meeting with boosters if he agreed to transfer to Alabama.  He ultimately did not pick Alabama and went where he knew the position coach and the team also agreed to offer his younger brother a scholarship.  The other University was up front about the NIL amount before he agreed to transfer.

Storm surge may be an issue, I'm not familiar with Tampa's stadium location. Otherwise Accuweather is calling for 1.6" of rain today, another .4" tonight. .2" tomorrow. Winds right now (Thursday at 9 am) 14 gusting 33. They'll have 2 days to clean up. Big Bend/Panhandle aren't going to get off so easy. Tallahassee is forecasting winds 61 gusting 119 tonight.

In terms of rain, that’s nothing for us in Central Florida - we get more than that during thunderstorms at times.   The ground down here is mostly sand mixed with dirt so it absorbs the rain much better than other parts of the country.

As far as storm surge, up to 6-7 feet is also (usually) not a huge issue.  Over 10 feet is when the issues usually arise down here - so hopefully no major damage to the Tampa/Clearwater areas.

Keeping fingers crossed.

All-22 Second Half.

Starting with a really pretty run by Saquon. Everybody blocks.

Jurgens, Steen and Johnson block down. Calcaterra, in motion left to right crosses to seal the edge. Dickerson pulls behind him.

Calcaterra is big enough to block the rushing CB, which he does. Dickerson pushes the DE wide. You can see the lane opening for Saquon.

Johnson climbs to the second level and blocks the MLB. Godert blocks the SS. That lane is huge.

The MLB,who started on the 25, is now back at the 29 and finally getting off Johnson. DeVonta has blocked the RCB. The FS is coming up.

Saquon is finally touched as he crosses the 30 brought down at the 35. First touched almost 10 yards across the LOS. Never saw that in NY.

Just a beautiful play.

I agree. That's why I said supposed. Perhaps deliberately setting up the long run. Or, perhaps, as you say, a bad read.

Given the state of the WRs... the Eagles are going to need to ride Barkley and the OL hard this week.   And I don't care if Vita Vea is playing or not.   Time to let the big boys impose their will.  IMO, this is a game where they need to bring the General Grant mindset to the game.   Recall his comment to his Generals during the Overland Campaign of '64.

Quote

"Oh, I am heartily tired of hearing about what Lee is going to do. Some of you always seem to think he is suddenly going to turn a double somersault, and land in our rear and on both of our flanks at the same time. Go back to your command, and try to think what we are going to do ourselves, instead of what Lee is going to do."

Kellen Moore needs to focus on how to get out there and take it to Vea and the rest of the Bucs' defense.  He can't let himself get worried about what Vea's presence does.  He needs to figure out how to take advantage of Vea's presence.

@mattwill

Eagles activate the running game like never before, especially before the bye week.

Eagles 24
Bucs 19

Bonus:  Eagles run the ball 40+ times.

More second half.

These two plays in sequence I thought were beautiful conceptually.

The first, a simple stretch play. Steen pulls and leads the back around. But the timing!

Steen has a slow pull as the left side of the line blocks down.

The LBs are slow to react because there's IZ action in front of them to the defense's left.

2004162678_2024-09-26(15).thumb.png.3f851f76e9755579acbca6b5d45cdfba.png

Steen has an angle on the and the RB - I think it's Shipley is tucked in behind him.

The play is called back because of a hold on Wilson.

Why did I post this play? Because we see the same action on the next play.

Amazing what a defense and a QB will do.   Last year, there was no QB... so how do you evaluate the offense effectively?  Well, we know PFF will put a number to it.  And let's not forget that there's likely a lot of growth and rehab that Becton has gone through since last year.

Hurts makes the right read on an RO:

1955851474_2024-09-26(21).thumb.png.11b7bee1e5da302fbf7733ca8feaad48.png

The OL blocks an IZ to the right and Hurts reads #6.

Who squats, so Hurts gives it to Saquon. Five yards.

My choice of the mistake is Dotson and/or Goedert. Too close together. Hurts has nowhere to go with the ball.

The problem is there are no rules or boundaries with NIL. The NCAA really botched it. If they laid the groundwork for what can and can't be done with NIL and set limitations on transfers they could have saved face and done a lot for the future of the game. Instead there's nothing, literally nothing. It's one of the main reasons Nick Saban retired. He said it's the Wild West out there. Dave Portnoy just said he'll buy a QB every year for Michigan up to $3 million. There's no rule that says he can't. It's absurd. All they had to do was create some sort of regulations and they didn't. It's going to get a lot worse before things get better, if they do. It's sad.

This poor boy fell on the playground and dislocated his shoulder. Oh wait, that's an NFL WR.
