We did a NATO exercise in the North Sea back in the early 90s. Along with finding all of the dummy mines they deployed for us to hunt, we found two live mines from WW2. I got to see EOD detonate one of them. Even from the safe distance we were at, it was scary and impressive. I also served with a dude who was on the Tripoli when they hit a mine during the Gulf war. Relatively cheap and easy to deploy, and like you said, they raise the pucker factor by a million.
