Yesterday at 12:39 AM1 day It's because Google has always shown the local reference name for any place, landmark, body of water, etc. As another recent example, they now show Turkiye instead of Turkey. If you go to Canada and launch the app, it'll probably still show Lake of Ontario just like they do with the Gulf of Mexico when you're in Mexico. They just honor the local reference submitted by the country's government rather than try to be an arbiter of what's actually the "true" name of something.

Note: It is possible there is some clause in their federal contracts that require them but otherwise there is no specific reason for Google to use a name just because the Feds choose to use it.
