The increase would be in the need for a rushing game in the NFL (that can include the QB) and the increase is over the last 5 or 6 years.

See Lions, Ravens, Eagles, 49ers, Bills.  5 of the 8 remaining teams this year are top 10 in rushing and 4 of the 5 realistic SB contenders.

Save for the Chiefs, nearly all the other top teams the last three years (Lions, Eagles, Ravens, Bills, 49ers) have all had top rushing attacks.

I think there’s been an increase importance in ability for a quarterback to scramble and have the ability to run in the NFL. However the eagles have always been ahead of that curve as they’ve had mcnabb, Vick, wentz and hurts. Even Jeff Garcia and kolb could before his concussions. Only times they don’t were Foles and when chip went Sammy sleeves. Imo that’s an evaluation of your quarterback and what you need out of your quarterback. I view that as there is a greater importance of what teams need out of the quarterback position.

the year the 49ers made Super Bowl were a top five passing offense. The 2 years in this 3 year window they didn’t make the Super Bowl they weren’t in the top 10 passing but rushing was. So I’d argue to the niners the greater importance was getting their passing game to where it needed to be to get there. But their rushing was good.

The Buffalo Bills those years were also in the top 10 for passing. Josh Allen could run from the time he got in the league the biggest question Was would he ever become the passer that he was capable of being. So I argue the greater importance to the Buffalo Bills over the last several years has been the development of Josh Allen’s ability to throw the ball that makes them a contender.

The lions biggest jump was from 2021 to 2022-2024. What happened? both passing and running jumped into the top 10 and passing consistently top 3 past two years. To me, the lions are the team that Jared Goff needed to be the quarterback that they got most out of him but they knew the importance of the running. To me they had just as great of importance of Goff living up to his potential as a passer and the running game being what it is to help him out. I think it’s equal on that one.

also when you comment you said what the ravens have done with Henry. So what was the greater importance to the Baltimore Ravens over the past year, Lamar Jackson learning how to be a top passer or them finishing once again as a top five rushing team again but this time with Henry? I’d argue Lamar as a passer is far more Of importance to them as it’s what’s cost them multiple times in the playoffs. In general with the ravens I kind of think they’ve had an organizational belief about running the ball going all the way back to when they won the first Super Bowl, with Jamal Lewis. So this isn’t anything new with them having a great importance of running the football. The organization has been structured like that for years.

This would be the first season with Lamar that they had a RB like Henry. They are not a pass-first team that opens up the run. It is the opposite.

They didn’t have Henry. But their offense were structured to run the ball and be a top three rushing team. They have been the last four years. You know what they haven’t had over the last four years? Lamar being a mvp type passer. The reason why the ravens failed the last couple years was not because they couldn’t run the football. It was because Lamar Jackson was not ready as a passer. If you’ve watched him 2022 and then you go watch him now he is by far a much better passer. I think it gets lost over because of how good Derrick Henry is and his running ability but his development as a passer and just two years has been significant.

There is still no one mad about the eagles winning. You are an idiot.

My post wasn't about the passing game at all, it was specific to the running game being able to maintain its current level of dominance by adding a complementary back (which seem to be highly affordable these days, especially compared to WRs and QBs).

And, the reason to bring in the complementary back is to try to avoid the injury to Barkley from happening in the first place, or at least having a piece in place to allow you to mitigate it without a massive overhaul to the philosophy.  I don't trust Gainwell in that role, and since he's a free agent anyway... they can upgrade that position any way they wish, either through free agency, the draft or both.

Looking at the free agent pool for this year, there's obviously no one close to Barkley or Henry available this year... but there are some intriguing names if the Eagles wanted to really lean in to the running game hard this offseason.  JK Dobbins, Najee Harris and AJ Dillon are all available depending on what the Eagles are looking for.  And then there's obviously the draft... where there's a number of intriguing backs.

Your point wasn’t but my original point m was attached to the passing game. this is what i wrote

For the Eagles to be as good as they’ve been and passing game is the same in 2025 then Barkley is going to have to be about this good next year.

Because i specifically wrote if you’re passing game stays at this level in 2025, then Barkley needs stay at about level to sustain how good they’ve been. It is a my bad cause I should’ve said the running game and not limited to strictly Barkley.

My overall point was really this if our passing game is the same in 2025 and running game/barkley isnt able to sustain this level then i dont know how you are going to be just as good.

@LeanMeanGM : This gave me a front office boner:

Diontae Johnson returns to Ravens on waivers claim

Quote

Johnson won't officially move to the Ravens until Feb. 10 -- the day after the Super Bowl. He qualifies as an unrestricted free agent. By claiming him, the Ravens will have a chance at earning a compensatory selection for the 2026 draft depending on the contract Johnson signs in free agency.

He will never hit the roster yet figures in to the comp pick formula.

Yup.  Bring him in, cut him because he refused to play, then sign him just for COMP PICKZZZZZZ.   And the fact he has a wiki First Stint\Second Stint entry just 2 1/2 months apart will never not be funny.

And Howie be sleeping :nonono:

The eagles offense IS vanilla on purpose.  It’s vanilla because Hurts turns the ball over at an unacceptable rate when it’s not.  When they run a vanilla offense, they can protect the football and get away with it because of their dominant running game.  It’s that simple.

Nobody hates Hurts more than me on here and I'm rooting for him to play his ass off beyond what's possible.

I hear ya.  We won't, unless he's the #2, and then when Hurts misses time as he inevitably will, we'll get to see glimpses.  QB is the toughest spot to evaluate, because the starter plays every snap pretty much as long as they possibly can.  So, there's very limited opportunity to see it.   But, I've heard it said about McKee that the defense has really benefited from him running the scout team and them having to prepare to face him constantly.   That might mean something.   But, the love affair with the back up QB continues in Philadelphia.  As you say, we don't really know that much about McKee, but there are multiple people on this board who are convinced that he's a capable starting QB in the NFL.  That seems massively premature.

That said, I'd be 100% on board moving Pickett this offseason and riding with McKee as the #2 for 2025, and looking to bring in yet another developmental QB in the later rounds of the draft this offseason.

McKee should be our backup in 2025, even if that means trading Pickett. I'm frankly disappointed Pickett is our backup now.
