What was the 2nd half time of possession and 2nd half stats in terms of plays run in that game?

Commanders had the ball 9 minutes 43 seconds for the second half. Not counting a spike they had 31 offensive plays.

That's not true. Eagles offense had the ball for over 36 minutes of the game. Commanders offense had 64 offensive plays while Eagles offense had 71  offensive plays.

I don't think it was ToP issue, as I remember one FG drive going for 8 minutes and others for 5 and 3.  Obviously, the problem was that our offense wasn't converting their extra possessions granted by TOs into TDs.  Meanwhile, the WAS offense was either committing TOs or getting TDs relatively quickly.  I can't remember exactly, but my guess is that WAS tried to stay in hurry up and exhaust our 3-man DE/DT rotations.

100 snaps? Are you serious? They ran 64 offensive plays; we ran 71. We had more than 36 minutes of possession. They had less than 24.

They scored 36 against us despite FIVE turnovers. They could have hung 50 on us easily, maybe more. And they had chunk plays, which the Fangio defense is not supposed to allow. It doesn't matter what they did or didn't do two months ago. They chewed Detroit up and they chewed us up in the second game. Maybe, if Hurts doesn't get knocked out in that second game we could have outscored them, but he doesn't play defense.

This is just f'ing silly nonsense....stay with me on this.  So, by Hurts going out, the Redskins totally sold out to stop the running game.  This caused Eagles offense to have short drives and 3 and outs.  This caused the Eagles Defense to be on the field for like all the 2nd half which helped the Redskins have chuck plays.  But also, with defensive fatigue, you had CJGJ out which absolutely hurt them and was directly responsible for that breakdown on the Zaccheaus TD.

The direct correlation of Hurts playing isn't that he plays defense....with Hurts/Barkley and the offense, the Eagles dominate teams time of possession, keeping our defense off the field.  When our defense is off the field, the opposing team cannot get chuck plays or score points right?  When our defense is off the field they are staying rested right?

And seeing as they scored with a minute left in the game, I'm not sure how the Redskins easily could have hung 50 on us unless there was an immediate turnover after kickoff and Washington gets the unusual 14 point play!

Reasons for optimism...

  • The Commanders strength of victory was the second lowest among playoff teams (Chargers).
  • In week 15, they barely beat the Saints (20 points in total against the 30th ranked defense)
  • In week 16, they needed a heroic fourth quarter to beat the Hurts-less Eagles at the end of the game (14 points after 3 quarters)
  • In week 17, they needed to go to overtime to beat the Falcons (24 points in regulation against the 23rd ranked defense)
  • In week 18, they only scored 3 points while Daniels was in the game
  • In WC round, they needed a game-ending FG to beat the Bucs.  Their RBs had 44 yards rushing total.
  • In DIV round, they beat a team that turned over the ball 5 times and didn't have half of their defense starters available.

They win five games in a row by a total of 17 points and then blow out a crippled defense.

I'm not buying it.

This is also their 4th straight road game

Go back and rewatch the game. I think you’ll find it wasn’t as bad as we remember it. I’m still concerned but not nearly as much now that I revisited week 16.

Oh, I have.

Believe it or not … I didn’t … the Eagles had 74 snaps in the second Washington game and the Commies had 68.

I don't expect much from Hurts this game given how he's been playing and now the knee injury. But it might be enough if he continues to not turn it over and can limit the dumb sacks. Hopefully the knee isn't too bad where he can get some key third down conversions running. This should be another Saquon game though and dare I say Gainwell as well. He looked good last week in his limited opportunities.

I also think the defensive tackles are sending them to the Super Bowl. Carter, Milton, and Davis might wreck this game. Even Ojomo as well.

That is a fascinating thing in its own right.  Winning 3 straight road games is a rare event in the NFL... 4 is almost never even possible, given that the NFL never goes for more than 3 in a row for a regular season schedule... and playoff teams starting on the road rarely get as far as Washington has.   I wonder how many times a team has even been in position to try to win 4 straight on the road, let alone do it.

The good news for them is that the road trips were fairly short.  Atlanta and Tampa meant no time zone change, and Detroit isn't that far at all.   And finally, the trip up to Philly is so short they are likely taking a train rather than flying.   Meanwhile, the Eagles don't have to travel at all, and are on their 5th!!! straight home game!

Yep, I'm actually looking at the play by play box score.

It really seems the main reason we lost that game was out inability to score a TD in the 2nd half.  Most our drives in the 2nd half either resulted in FG's (Even with great field position) or punts - and then Washington would capitalize with TD's.

As "fairly decent" as Pickett played in that game - had Hurts remained in, good chance we win that game - especially since Washington's defense seemed to focus primarily on Barkley (without needing to worry about Hurts potentially running) during most the the 2nd half.

Again, this is not true. They did not have a single 3 and out the entire second half, unless you count the very last FG. Ealges defense was on the field in the 2nd half for 9 minutes 43 seconds. That means the Eagles offense was on the field in the 2nd half for roughly 20 minutes.

The Eagles DID dominate TOP this game and the DID keep the defense off the field.

Ok, then I guess we aren’t seeing the same thing. I feel we can hold them to around 20 or 24 if we stay in our lanes. I watched the TB game as well. Nice O but I’m not seeing a juggernaut like, say, the Lions.

The NFL’s reporting of the snaps/plays is interesting.  The game summary totals show your 71 and 64 numbers, but the Gamebook shows 74 and 68.

Don't use your facts to make me try and change my misguided brain!  LMAO  Guess it just seemed like Washington had the ball like the whole 4th quarter! 🙂

This was my comment after the game.  Touchdowns always beat field goals.  Eagles settled for FGs on their last 4 scores, while Washington scored 5 TDs and a two-point conversion.  Red Zone defense needs to be better.

Their "road games" were at most a 2.5  hour plane ride so not necessary "tiresome" in terms of traveling.  There is something to be said about a rookie QB winning 3 straight road games - 2 of them in very hostile playoff atmospheres, though.  That is impressive.

That said, none of those games were at the Linc, in front of Philly fans, in the NFC Championship Game, against a team like the Eagles.

We'll see what happens Sunday but tbh, we can only beat ourselves.  If we stay healthy and play our A game on both sides of the ball, we can beat any team in the NFL.

I need to hear stuff like this cause I can't shake the bad feeling I have about this game.  Part of it is because I have some family and friends who are Commoders fans and the family side has been annoying with this run.

Aside from the family part, I’m in the same boat. I wanted Tampa to knock them off, and yes, even knowing it would put us on the road, I wanted the Lions to knock them off too. I think we can and should win, but I’m more nervous this week than the last two.

Sure felt like 100 as they had the ball 3000 times with the constant 3 and outs. You think it's a coincidence that 22 of their points came in the 4th quarter? Don't think the defense was totally gassed by that point?

I truly don't understand how you're overestimating their capabilities based on one game where they needed 3 separate miracles to even win at home against a team with their backup QB. 1) Hurts goes out early, 2) CJGJ gets ejected based on nothing, 3) smitty drops a pop warner pass that seals the game.

Like I said in my previous post, the issue was the inability to get into the end zone, despite great field position for the offense in the 2nd half.  They didn't have many "3 and outs" but couldn't get into the end zone.  If I remember correctly, they had a few drives killed by penalties and a few others where they just couldn't convert on crucial downs deep in Washington's territory.

Only 5 teams in NFL history won 3 straight road playoff games and made the SB alone. I just looked at their regular season finale and all were at home so I would guess Washington would be the first to win 4 straight road games to make the SB.
