EMB Blog: 2024 Regular Season (Part 2) ... and Playoffs

That is the biggest comparison in my opinion. I actually thought about the early 90's Cowboys watching the Eagles play a couple of weeks ago...I think it was the game Barkley had the reverse hurdle. I made a comment a couple of weeks here ago stating all the Eagles need to do is run the ball and control the game in response to a comment regarding offense DVOA concerns. Big plays and turnovers will come when the other teams begin pressing to push the ball down the field to try and stay in the game. That's an issue ball control team causes, a pressure, which in turn gets teams out of their gameplan and creates TOs, another similarity to those Cowboys teams.

My prediction at the beginning of the year for the Eagles was 14-3 or 13-4, in the NFC CG, likley in the SB. Now that they are rolling it's possible they finish 15-2 and HF through the playoffs. If I were picking the NFC CG right now it's DET vs PHI. It all comes down to HF advantage...I don't think DET can play in the elements and win @ PHI.

You guys have a lot to be excited about right now.

Add on top of that.....Jerry wants to extend McCarthy!  I mean, talk about the holiday season!  If you could just send over Parsons while you're at it....

Would like to see Carter slide out to DE once in a while in obvious passing situations.  A few times a game.  The Chiefs do that with Chris Jones and he is very difficult to block that way.  Very hard to double team him that way.  A TE would need to chip him which is not the same as a guard/center double team..

So, seems like running the ball is a good idea with a monster O line and the best RB in the league. Who knew?!

Well Sirianni isn't some sort of rocket surgeon.

The Eagles franchise won-loss record is currently 633-638-27 (0.498).  Only five games under five hundred.

The team has NEVER been over 0.500 - bottoming out at 94 games under in 1987 and 1977.

Why are you so sure he is on the decline now? People said that about Graham and Cox, yet they played very well late in their careers. If you have a younger, cheaper prospect with projected upside, you can move on from a player. But when you don't have anything to replace him with, that just makes no sense --- unless you simply can't afford to keep him at market value.

Cox was a superstar who had a linear decline but never fell off a cliff.  Not a rare trajectory.

Graham was never a star, but had a one in a million aging process.  He just didn’t decline beyond a serviceable threshold.

Sweat isn’t Cox and the odds of him aging like Graham are lower than a replacement becoming good.

I worry Howie prioritizes Becton/Sweat over Baun. The dropoff from Becton to Steen or Sweat to Hunt/RD1 pick is just steeper than Baun to any other LB we can find.

We could break with tradition and target a player like Jalon Walker early in the draft to fill the Baun role - Vic has a recent trend now of coaching up players of this type (Van Ginkel).

I got to side with wifey.  I couldn't get into that show.  Characters irritated the hell out of me.

Danny Dimes is the piece they’ve been missing all along

In no way shape or form do I want the 49'ers winning a Super Bowl EVER, but tell me it wouldn't be hysterical if he went there and won a Super Bowl with that team, Saquan wins the MVP....and the Giants organization and their fans just IMPLODE!  That being said, f the Niners and I hope they don't even make the playoffs.

I agree with you.  Cox had unique physical gifts.  He was laterally quick and strong.  His quickness fell off but he was still stronger and played with better leverage which made him an above average player even in his last season.

Graham's play hasn't declined.  Graham's talent is really his lower body strength, leverage and motor.  He had his most productive season as a 34 year old.  His production this season would be commensurate with production in his 20's.  He is continued to be a disruptive player.

Sweat's strength is his flexibility and athletic ability. He could have a Robert Quinn type season in his late 20's or early 30's.  The problem is the cost of keeping Sweat vs. the risk one injury just does in his career.  Also, the cost of keeping him at market value will mean potentially losing a younger player with more upside.

Danny Dimes signs with the Vikings.

Does any NFL reporter actually watch NFL games? Daniel Jones played like trash all season.  He cannot throw more than 20 yards downfield.  He doesn't process well in the pocket.  He is inaccurate and has poor ball placement.  He's been in the League for 6 seasons and his play is the same as it was as a rookie.

How about we win the Super Bowl.

Goes without saying.....I'm was just pointing out if we cannot or do not win it, watching the Giants and their fans just suffer would be pretty funny.

By the way, has there been any update on Devonta Smith recently?

Yeh I was shocked to hear him say that, he just doesn’t know when to keep his mouth closed. Let it play out, make your moves in the offseason, quit talking about it already.

I'm a traditional guy. Thanksgiving game tradition should give us the Lions in throwback uniforms but they are trotting out in all blue. The unitard trend in football sucks.

I saw another clip of Earl Campbell this morning also.

Two of the most physically imposing running backs to ever play the game. Jim Brown was another.

John Riggins is similar to Henry and probably was closer to Henry's speed than Csonka.

I loved the Sweat draft pick, loved his extension, loved the player.  But it’s time.  They will not get their money’s worth on his next extension.  He’s good, but hes the type you replace at this point.  Hes got good football in front of him, but not his best football.

Those are the toughest decisions…players that are still good, but their best is behind them.

Ok, for all the Sweat haters and naysayers, who do you replace him with?  It's well and good to just say don't resign him but that's not good enough.

Who do you replace him with?

Three SBs is a pretty good report card for a QB.  One can argue for results from QBs like Marino or Lamar but in the end of the day the #1 priority for the QB is to win and to do that with the resources available.  If that means throwing 35x a game then that is what is needed.  Of course not all QBs can do it that way but there are many many examples of QBs that can throw really well but can't win SBs.  Other characteristics, e.g. leadership, late game heroics, avoiding turnovers, etc. are also very important.  Hurts isn't the best at pure pocket passing and hitting timing patterns but he is excellent at many other key items for a QB.  Note: He does throw a great deep ball so he does have some serious throwing ability for some types of passes.

Regarding Aikman, I was thinking a bit about what the Eagles were doing since the bye (and back in '22) and how they were a bit of a throw back and the 90s Cowboys came to mind.  I've also heard some other people talk about it as well.  They compare pretty favorably.  Smith/Irvin/Harper/Novacek vs. Barkley/Brown/Smith/Goedert, two great OLs, volume of rushing attempts, ball control, excellent D, awesome leader at QB, etc.

@mattwill Add some of your thoughts here.

That is a good comparison.  30-35 years ago has made fuzzy my memory of the kind of details about those Cowboys that are so front and center about these Eagles,  so I can’t add much to your solid description.  Novacek vs. Goedert is the comparison of two really good TEs.  Not a lot was said back then about TE blocking, so I don’t know if Novacek had that plus as part of his game.  I also  didn’t have the benefit of @just relax in those days so I was more aware of the skill positions than of the trenches.

Kind of think the niners ran him into the ground the last two years with over 325+ touches and Father Time caught up with him. He’s always been somewhat injury prone. Carolina did the same thing in back to back years early in his career and it took him multiple years before he just stayed healthy again. Now he’s 28 and likely closer to rb cliff. Tbh i thought the niners should’ve just kept him out this year and let him fully heal. Trying to just make the playoffs with him. Mason and guerendo weren’t their issue. Issue is aiyuk wasn’t great prior to his injury and Deebo isn’t worth the contract he got. Tbh Jennings has been their best WR which is an issue

couple months ago, there were rumors coming out that the Niners ownership didn’t agree with the Niners front office and Kyle Shanahan in paying all these guys. They did it but was friction. I am super curious to see what happens in the off-season if the Niners missed the playoffs. Cause I’m guessing there’s gonna be big changes to that circus. They don’t want to be paying all these guys that money. I would suspect Deebo Samuel is a guy that’s going to be traded off that roster
