I didn’t say Becton sucked. I said I’d just prefer to keep Williams and Sweat. That’s more about positional value than the quality of the player. I think Becton working out is, in itself, a case for why he should be prioritized last. The Eagles just filled that RG hole with a guard picked up off the scrap heap. So they’ve shown they can do that already. I don’t think it’s going to be easy to replace Milton Williams, Baun, or Sweat. And I think you can find quality guards in middle rounds of the draft that I’d trust with Stoutland coaching them up. I think it’s harder to find starting caliber DTs and edge rushers. But ideally I’d like to keep all of them and I think they have a good chance to.

But I’d be pretty surprised if Becton leaves. He likes it here and has said he wants to stay and finally found a home that fits.

You’re impenetrable. I’ve said my piece.

Ewers is straight garbage, Manning should have been put in

If this were a traditional passing offense, I would say that letting Bechton walk and starting Steen at RG would be a ok.

But this isn’t a traditional offense.  The success of this team is predicated on this kind of play from our OL.  Not sure if they can afford to go from an elite road grader to a merely good starter at RG, which is in some ways the engine position for the running game.

Nah thats the left side. They pull Mailata. They follow dickerson on the shove. I actually think becton struggles with the shove, maybe bc of his height and high CoG

I know, I just disagree with it. But I'd love to keep them all.

I said we should consider it.

And we should.

If you can get, say, Jalen Milroe in the first round of the draft this year, coach him up for a year or two, then trade Hurts for a bunch of draft picks AND get cap space, yeah — that’s something we should absolutely consider and you’d be stupid not to.

Having a QB on a rookie deal is a MASSIVE advantage. We can see this year that the variance between top 20 starting QBs isn’t that great. So it’s just an opportunity cost. It’s not like Hurts is Brady, Mahomes or Montana.  We are talking about a quality starter but not a super star, not an all timer, not a top 5 guy.

Milroe will get overdrafted…and probably bust.  He’s not even as good as Hurts was in college.

Good luck the the PSU fans…UGA winning the SEC will make the top 4 interesting.

Exactly.

As long as we are talking about replacement, do we think Hurts is THAT irreplaceable?

I tend to think I have a higher opinion of Hurts than most. He’s a winner, a team player, certainly has a unique dynamism with his strength and athleticism. I think his accuracy is very underrated both on short passes and long balls.

I feel the same way. Think Hurts is a top 10 QB. But if we're going to be a running team and want to pay all these non-QBs...we can find a younger, run-first QB on a rookie deal.

Hes a better runner.  Has a quicker release and a better throwing motion.

But he will need to improve as a passer but has the tools.

Hurts is better as a passer than he was in college but not sure how much more he will improve.

The Eagles did not use one of their activations on Albert O, nor is he still affiliated with the team. You claimed both things to be true. Neither were.

Oregon wearing black jerseys with the green helmets looks nice.  Eagles should wear the black jerseys with Kelly green helmet.

James Franklin in a big game was very predictable.

But that all said, I don’t think it would be terribly difficult to replicate his production given a year or two of planning. The difference between QBs has never been so narrow, and as you said, the team is totally built around the OL. If ever there were a situation that a QB could thrive, this is it.

Howie does need to be dynamic with the situation (and he’s done a great job of that with this team).

Im pretty confident in saying that the 2024 Eagles, specifically on offense, are not the exact blueprint Howie had in his mind.

With the money they have in Hurts, Brown, and Devonte…the number of first round picks burned on WRs…they tried to build your typical drop back and throw it 30 times for 300 yards and get what you can on the ground with a committee offense.

But they ended up with an OL that is nearly unprecedentedly good at moving DL off their spot at will and an opportunity to get a generational RB for reasonable money….in the climate of an NFL that is built to stop the pass and not the run.

So here we are.  I never wanted this design.  I don’t think Howie or Lurie ever wanted this design.  But the winds took them in this direction and they dynamically rolled with it.

The question…is this just who we are now? If so, you better keep Bechton.  Realistically, they’ve got another 25-30 games of Barkley.  So they need to figure out if they are going to drift back into investing more into the passing game or if they want to continue with this run heavy offense, which will probably require replacing Barkley in aggregate with two excellent backs one day.

The primary value of an all-time OL coach like Jeff Stoutland is to coach up guys so we don't have to break the bank every time.

Keep the defense together with Baun and Williams and/or Sweat.  Use the draft or cheap FA's to replace the other.

As for Becton, if the price is right bring him back.  But I doubt we can afford to give him a massive contract.

So pick another guy. He was just an example.

Totally disagree.

The primary value of Stoutland is the high probability of fulfilling potential he creates for a player who is motivated.

It’s why we can hand him an Australian Rugby player who has never played a down of football and a few years later we have a pro bowl left tackle. It’s why we can take a top pick who was a complete bust in New York and end up with a pro bowl right guard.

The primary benefit of Stoutland is you can double down and have ultra high probability of ultra high impact from ultra high talents.

You don’t develop these guys just to let other teams get their best years. You develop them, keep them, and then use them to humiliate other teams.

If only Howie could have gotten Baun and Becton on 2 year deals...

Howie will find a way to sign Baun and Becton.

The salary cap is a ponzi scheme and Howie is the NFL's Jeffrey Skilling.

Tez Johnson is the kind of guy who would be a killer WR3.

I like Becton also but it's not like we haven't had a dominant OL for years.  It will be dominant next year whether he is here or not, in large part thanks to Stoutland.

And you know better than most that a player's value is a function of what they are paid.  Otherwise you wouldn't be floating far-fetched scenarios of trading away our QB to save cap.

Becton off the scrap heap this year is fantastic, and Stoutland gets us max value from him.  What value we get from Becton next year depends on how much he is paid, and the opportunity cost of spending the money on him instead of on our defense for example, when we know Stoutland will field a dominant unit with or without him.
