I think the only way Goedert is on the roster in 2025 is if he agrees to restructure and reduce his 2025 comp. I'm not sure they can post June 1 him early since they likely use those slots on JB and Slay, but I guess any one of those guys could actually be held until after June 1 assuming the option bonuses aren't due before then. There are small savings cutting Goedert pre June 1, but Slay would cost an extra almost $9mm (~22mm dead cap) and JB is an extra ~3mm ($10.8mm dead money). Post June 1, Slay's dead money in 2025 drops to ~9.4mm, and $13.3mm moves into 2026. JB's dead cap drops to just over $3mm, with $7.7mm pushed to 2026. So using the post June 1 on those guys adds almost $9mm in 2025 cap from the baseline (keeping them on the roster) and pushes $21mm to 2026. That's the real bang for the buck on the post June 1 cuts.

We are already carrying ~$26mm of dead money in 2025 for Kelce and Cox, and BG and Sweat could add to that as well. So I am guessing Howie looks to move Slay and JB's money to 2026, and if he has to cut Goedert and take the full $11mm in 2025, he does. I hope he agrees to a reduced number, but who knows.

Are we sure that slay isn’t going to get a small extension. I know he’s older but he has played well this year. I’m not talking about a 4 year extension but i could see them giving him another 1 or 2 year. Would i do it at his age? No but i could see them doing it cause when healthy he’s been good.

I don't think that's what is going to happen.  The speculation about trading Shanahan isn't from the 49ers organization.  It's apparently not something Shanahan wants. I would have to think they would get rid of Lynch too if that was the case.  If I was Lynch, I would not want to get rid of Purdy or Shanahan.    Sure you may luck into a better coach but it's just as likely the re-build doesn't work.  Purdy is a young QB.  Just try to win by building around him.

I wouldn't move Shanahan, so I agree there. But there is no way I'd give Purdy $60mm/year. To me, it would be a worse decision than giving Prescott that contract. Dak had a team with NINE (8 other than him) all-pros in 2023 and got bounced in round 1. He had 3 all-pro OL (Tyron Smith, Tyler Smith and Martin), and all-pro WR, an all-pro edge rusher, an all-pro CB and all-pro K and P. If he can't get it done with that roster, no way he can do it with lesser talent.

Purdy couldn't get it done with a team that had a 1st team all-pro LT, RB, FB, TE and LB and a 2nd team all-pro WR, and CB. So 5 1st team all-pros, 2 2nd team, and we still aren't talking about Bosa, Hargrave, Deebo, etc. All that, and he got you just as far as...Jimmy G.

People in the media like to say Jalen was carried to the SB in 2022 - he had 2 first team all-pros (Kelce and Lane) and 3 second team all-pros other than himself (AJ, Reddick and Bradberry).

Yeah, I'm inclined to think they try to run it back next season, likely without Deebo.  As an organization they think their talent is better than it actually is, and they think Shanahan is a better coach than he actually is.  They'll write this season off purely to injuries and assume they'd have had 13-14 wins if healthy.

I think their contending window is pretty much closed, with the caveat their division isn't that strong.

Beat writer for the niners mentioned they might go after darnold in FA/trade with Vikings if franchised and try to trade purdy instead of paying purdy the money he wanted

I could see them doing it at a lower number with flexibility to cut him after one year, but I wonder if the JB experience gives Howie some pause. Slay's issue now is staying on the field.

Frankly, he could get the same treatment as Goedert. He has an non-guaranteed option bonus for ~$14.5mm in 2025, and I can't see any way he sees that money. But if he takes less and we tack on a year (guarantee a smaller number for 2025), then maybe.

Barry carries a little resentment towards the Lions organization, I think.

Yeah, that's part of it.  I think he, like a lot of other RBs are over the salary difference and they are loving that Saquon showed everyone that RBs are a position worth paying.

Over the last few seasons there's been a few running backs complaining about their pay in terms of what other positions are getting.  Saquon getting 3 yrs / $37 mil is insane if you think about what WRs are paid.  Devonte and AJ both make > $25 mil per season.  Even the best paid RBs don't make that.

I'd rather just sign Rodgers if given the choice between the two. I can see the Eagles signing Slay though.

Yup. I tend to think they’d take a short deal with slay over Rodgers. Not that I’d do that. I still think they’ll take a corner rounds 2-5 that they’ll likely develop behind slay so when he is finally done they’ll have him groomed.

Couple things about extensions.

1. I don't expect any extensions until after the playoffs. Doesn't make sense at this point so late in the year.

2. I believe Howie wants Dean on this team long-term if he stays healthy the rest of this year and next. Draft pick bias, connection with Jalen Carter and the other Georgia guys, his leadership, his big time play on the field this season. Which makes the Baun question fascinating - would Howie actually re-sign 2 ILBs?

3. Jurgens extension will be sooner and more expensive than you think. Would mean paying premium money to 80% of the OL.

4. We're a year away from Jalen Carter getting absolutely stupid money.

Considering all of that, I think Williams and Becton walk. Slay walks too; don't think Howie will tempt fate with an old CB extension again, so he's gone. Probably 60/40 Baun gets e-signed. Saquon gets a pay bump. 1st 3 rounds of the draft is some combo of Edge-DT-OL.

This made me laugh

Thank Fing christ this dude is gone for good now. Didn't want Howie to be tempted to waste a roster spot on him in the future.

Since we just beat Pittsburgh I’ll go ahead and say it…

Sheetz is definitely better than WaWa.

Carter will likely get his mega contract whenever it's possible but it'll be before the market gets too insane

I'd like to think with Howie paying a RB... he'll change his philosophy and pay LBs

Curious if Barkley gets restructured already to give him a pay raise but also free up space for others

They can't restructure Barkley's contract to add any 2025 cap space -- he's already at a minimum salary with a guaranteed option bonus of $9.843mm. And no way they give him a raise after one year.

-Still 2 years for Carter's huge contract, so I'm not too worried about him yet.  At that point, Saquon's deal will be over...what happens to him after this deal btw?

If you can keep only 2 of Carter, Davis and Williams...who are you keeping? Carter and Williams for me. Not taking away Davis's impact in the run game, I just think Williams makes such an impact next to Carter.

-I think Jurgens is the first extension we see.

-I'm not locking up Dean up yet. He's been very good this year, but they do have Trotter (a very similar player) waiting in the wings.

Wow. Didn't know

Pretty much every extension Howie does is structured with minimum salaries and annual option bonuses that can be amortized. We very rarely have anyone we can restructure to create space.

Yup.  #4 is going to approach $30M / year average.  Fitting that in along with Hurts, Brown, Smith, the OL, etc. will be interesting to see.
