I went to Subway tonight for a quick and easy dinner. Not the best, not the worst. It is what it is... a quick and easy dinner.

I order a 'Steak and Cheese' with extra cheese.

The girl behind the counter says 'Do you want the Philly Cheesesteak'? I said 'Yes, but you can't give me one'. She said 'Yes, it's on the menu...', I said 'Just because you call it a Philly Cheesesteak doesn't make it a Philly Cheesesteak...'

She didn't understand, so I said "I just want the Steak and Cheese, I'll wait until I go to Philadelphia to get a real Philly Cheesesteak."

The people in line behind me were originally from Philly and laughed and wholeheartedly agreed and appreciated me differentiating between their steak and cheese and a Philly Cheesesteak.

For the record, I've never had a real Cheesesteak as I've never actually been to Philly. So I have to make due with what I can actually get.

I see Sydney Brown being that guy.  I'd have him in there to blitz Mahomes early on.  Go for the kill shot.  Send a message.

This DT looks pretty good. Might even sneak into the end of round 1 or should easily go round 2.

We are also talking about 1st ballot potential, which has its own (whether real or perceived) mystique.  He was the #3-6 QB in the league during his time.

It was just a great era for QBs. Someone said how Eli was never a top 5 QB in the league during his career. But put him in the NFL today, and he is consistently top 3 today.

So, Brees is better than he appears if you are just looking at him compared to that era. Over the history of the NFL, he still stacks up as one of the best.

Eli would not be top 3 today, he’d still be a fringe top 10 guy on his best days.

I won’t argue with Brees if he makes it first ballot.  I just think there is some convo to it given the QB’s of that time and how and where he stacked with them.  The convo about him is a bit more fun to have vs Eli, a guy who being on the ballot is pretty disrespectful to the Hall.

There is a website called gold belly that works with regional restaurants and delivers  specialty food overnight. I ordered 4 authentic Philly steaks from Jims ( I know...maybe not the best but the choice of  Philly cheesesteak shops are limited) The steaks were prepared and in my hands via packaging with dry ice all within 15 hours to California.

I get asked to try various "Philly" cheesesteaks in the places I visit.  In Cleveland, I was taken to a "The Original Steaks and Hoagies". (any folks from Delco might recognize that as the tag for "La Spada's".  This place claims to have formerly owned 3 LaSpadas shops in the Philly area.)    Anyway...  on the wall, they try so hard to prove that they are legit.   They have specific ordering instructions for people to get the full Philly experience.   It's an 8 foot tall mural with their whole story, and this is the end:

Step 1…Specify plain (no cheese), Cheez Whiz, Provolone cheese or American cheese.
Step 2…Specify if you want steak with (wit) or without (wit out) onions.
Step 3…Have your money ready. (Do all of your borrowing in line.)
Step 4…Practice all of the above while waiting in line.

So, I go and test them.   I order, "Cheesesteak, Provolone, Wit".  The kid behind the counter says "you want provolone and whiz?"   After a few minutes the kid at the griddle informs the kid that that's how they order them in Philly.  I told him, "I just followed the instructions on your giant mural."

Then I got the sandwich.  I took a picture and sent it to my wife.   She asked, "What's that?"   "That's Cleveland's attempt at a cheesesteak."  They claim to get Amoroso rolls delivered daily (I assume from Philly).   But, anyone in the area knows that there's 2 kinds of hoagie rolls... there's the fresh rolls that every steak shop uses, which need to be used within about 6 hours of being baked... and there's the ones they add the preservatives to that they bag up in multipack bags.  And while the name might be the same, they aren't the same level of roll.    (I'm personally a fan of Liscio's.).  And step one of the cheesesteak is getting the bread right.   If the bread is wrong, its the wrong sandwich.

Anyway, the meat was basically minced.  It wasn't 'shaved' as they claim.  And the cheese was added to the roll, then the meat to the roll.   The proper technique, of course, is to put the cheese over the meat as it sits on the griddle, and then the roll is placed over the cheese to steam a bit.   They didn't steam it at all.  :nonono:   It was ok.  But, it wasn't authentic by any means.  It was a decent approximation, but it wasn't worth it.   Some of the others over the years...   One was literally a slab of steak with a slice of cheese on a roll.  FYI... when they start pushing peppers... that's a red flag!  As is the 'whiz'.  🤮

No, because we'll get another shot at the Chiefs in 2 years.

Mahones, Josh Allen, ok I forgot Burrow. Now, probably Eli is next in today's NFL. But this stuff changes a bit year to year and he would consistently be up there each year in this era of QBs.

I dont think Eli needs to get in real soon. But I think eagles fans like to say he was worse than he was. I loved laughing at his stupid face when he looked scared. But, he did a lot of winning and his offenses werent usually crazy talented. Good enough but nothing special.

Brees is for sure.

Quote

The 13-time Pro Bowl quarterback ranks No. 2 on each of the NFL's all-time passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions lists. Brees only trails Tom Brady in all three categories.

For me on that list of new candidates- Brees, Fitzgerald, and Witten are potential 1st ballots. The rest of them can wait a while.

I can’t do these heavy cheese based dips any more if I don’t want to be fat.

The most decedent game day food I make are devils on horse back:

Dates stuffed with goat cheese wrapped in bacon. I’ll only eat a few because they’re so rich, but they are so F’n good. It’s good for a small group; too much prep if you have a lot of people, not really worth the effort for 1 or 2 people.

You should just make your own, it’s not difficult. The hardest part is sourcing a good roll.
