I'm in the minority in not loving Dean's play last year, so I think there's a real chance we can find an upgrade in 2025.

I do tend to agree here. The bar was set pretty low. Because everyone had no expectations and thought he was a bust. And the GA Bulldogs connection can create biases. Next to Baun and this line he can look solid if healthy. But replaceable, as we saw a JAG like Burks (who I do want to keep reasonably) because of his strengths and fit here.

I can't help but think that Dean may be one of the Jalen Carter whisperers that keeps Jalen from becoming his worst self.

Yeah, I wonder about that with JD as well. Assuming he misses most of 2025, he'll be cheap to bring back in 2026.

Agreed on a 3 year window.

When a bad team is in "cap hell," the fans and media view it as a double whammy...you suck and you don't have cap room.  But if you are rebuilding from the bottom up through the draft, what good is the cap room to sign a bunch of 26-28 year olds anyway?  2 years of cap inflexibility when you are rebuilding are fine.

My point is...we already just won a SB and figure to be a SB favorite for the next 3.  No team in the NFL is more "ready."  So what's wrong with stashing all the bad cap obligations to exactly 3-4 years from now when all of these great players will be past their prime, the team won't be ready, and our focus will be on drafting new franchise cornerstones all over again to get back?

This strategy is stupid for a merely good team still looking to arrive.  Say...the Packers or Commanders.  But for a team that is already at the top with well defined cornerstones with fairly predictable declines in 3-4 years...

I'd say pummel that 2028 cap with bad contracts.  We could be 3 superbowls in by then.

Yeah, I don’t disagree. The way I see it is the offense is all in their prime and the defense is mostly young. If you can keep that group together for 3 years we could come away with 1 or 2 more super bowls. If you then take a 1 or 2 year rebuild period we should be in a position with a young offense and aging defense where a new QB on a rookie deal can compete.

All I know is this is the best talent the eagles have ever assembled and we need to take advantage of it. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to add multiple lombardis to the trophy cabinet.

Baun strikes me as the type of guy who’s just a natural born leader too. Type of guy well respected by everyone.

Me too… very happy they agreed before free agency started.  He was very essential for D continuity in my opinion.  Edge rushers and DTs get paid more, but it’s harder to find an inside LB that fits a scheme as well as Baun fits Fangio’s.  I just feel it’s going to be easier to replace Williams/Sweat than it would’ve been to replace Baun.  Carter is the engine that helps the line go… I feel there are other players out there, for less money, that will look just as good playing on Carter’s line

The dead money hits in 2029 and 2030...oh man. Now, Jalen is almost $100mm in 2029, and he probably gets extended and the can is kicked. But there's a ton of others.

The window is now through 2028.

Found @vikas83 twitter account and or Sam Lynch reads the blog

slynch was one of the OGs on the old board. Really smart guy.

I think the window is as long as Jalen Hurts is our QB. And Howie is our GM. We will be in the hunt for quite awhile. Just like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Mahomes etc. This will be the youngest roster in the league this season with Slay, Graham and Bradberry gone. Maybe Goedert and Burks as well.  Elliott & Lovato also raise the age and wont be here long term IMO. So not many 30 somethings on the team. Good with that.

Also teams win with flawed starters all the time. We can have a weak spot and still win. This season was unusual and even then the DEs weren’t great until the end

Hmmm... they are looking for a replacement, whose name is spelled very similarly.

Starts with H... U... and then a double consonant.   🤔.  Does anyone know anyone with a name like that?

While I agree for the most part, I am concerned about the size of our DEs. Hunt is, what? 250? Smith is maybe 240. Smith in particular plays a very violent game. Will his body hold up in all those collisions with guys who outweigh him by 90-100 pounds? Going with two smaller guys puts heavy pressure on our DTs. Note that this an argument for keeping Davis though it’s not my primary point. Since we play such a light box and almost entirely bull rush our DEs, we need more beef. I’ve been against acquiring Garrett but unless we get bigger outside maybe I’ll change my mind.

Nolen being there at 32 is the same synopsis as getting Baun back for 13 mil per year or less

Based on Baun cap hit, one of Becton or Williams can still happen. But but but....may have to sacrifice Burks or Rodgers. Or both. This is slippery territory. Howie likes to have cash on hand for the low cost FA gems after this initial wave. In order to do so, one of Goedert or Davis is getting traded. Or both.

I don't think the last 2 will happen.  Maybe one.

Anyone getting the GoDaddy server timeout error?
