Yeah. I agree if they also overpay Bengals in draft picks. I would have taken him for a low 2nd or high 3rd in value. And around $30M. I assume all of this just went up so will be out of range here.

Agreed, but I wouldn’t have extended him if he came here.  Rent him for one season and then take a Comp Pick when he leaves the next offseason.  A third plus Huff with, as @LeanMeanGM suggested, the Bengals assuming Huff’s guaranteed bonus on their Cap.

I do not see the Eagles in the Trey Hendrickson market either.  I really think people don't appreciate the cap needs coming up in the next 2 years for D players.

Totally agree. Draft picks in this environment are even more important. Vic has a good eye for talent, so second or third tier FA who won't count against comp pics will be big as well.

Some GMs who suck are killing things for everyone else.

You have one more cheap year. He will demand an extension after yr 3 and deserve it

Agreed, and Howie will use that to his advantage.  He won’t tear up (renegotiate) the original contract but rather include the "deserved” money in the extension … while giving Carter all that future payment in cash up front.  Win-Win.

Howie using the time value of money to both his advantage and Carter’s advantage.

By the time Micha and Chase get paid, Carter is going to want $45m+.

He’s also a DT though. Only 1 makes over 28m$ a year. So as long as Howie gets him early and he doesn’t have 30 sacks in 2025, I think we’ll be okay there

With Garrett off the table bringing back Josh Sweat makes the most sense for the Eagles.  Harold Landry is probably going to cost as much if not more for similar production but coming from a losing team.  Keep the guy you know already plays well in your system.  Can't see them trading for Hendrickson.  Can't see them paying big money to Khalil Mack at this age.

I think the play for the Eagles is to bring back Sweat and sign Dre-Mont Jones to play interior defensive line like he did in Denver under Fangio.  If Sweat is really going to land a massive deal then I think they could get Joey Bosa for relatively cheap at his age considering his injury history.  He could then compete with Hunt for playing time/starting role and Eagles draft another edge rusher.

Bosa is going to SF to play with his brother.  But other than that your logic is sound.

Yep, no sense in playing hardball with him and risking a holdout. Just extend him then and try your best to make it work everywhere else. Price goes up every year you wait anyways.

We shall see.  We have a lot of money pushed out to the seasons when Carter's extension would  kick in, not to mention Smith can extend after this season as well.  Both Mitchell and Dejean after the 2026 season.

Agreed

Sweat is going to get 20+ million which prices him out for the Eagles. Not only that, the Eagles could sign someone like Smith who just got released for significantly cheaper than Sweat AND gain a really good comp pick in the process. The chances of Sweat coming back are slim to none. I would however be shocked if they didn't sign a DE but it will likely be a guy who got released or at least someone who will cost a fraction of the cost of Sweat like an Ojulari or Tryon-Shoyinka if they really want to go cheap.

Yeah I'm not with you there. I think at the very least they need a decent proven vet to come in and compete with Ringo and also provide depth with one of them being the backup. I suppose the other option is to slide Dejean outside and find a slot corner which is cheaper and easier to find than outside corner. I think you potentially weaken two positions doing that though so that wouldn't be my preference.

Having a proven vet come in is fine in concept, but faces challenges when the cost of that kind of proven player gets factored in.

How much do you think a proven CB vet will cost?

Is Slay that kind of proven vet?

I don’t think him or his agent is going to care about the DT market. Carter is in the Aaron Donald category, who was also the highest paid non-QB, Carter will want the same.

A lot of people forget about Ricks and I think we haven’t seen much of him but the coaching staff believes in him and kept him on the roster all year for a reason.

Ricks got the same amount of playing time as Huff.  What does that say about what Fangio thinks about Ricks? 🤫🤫🤫

DT - Allen, Hargrave, Jones, Collins

EDGE - Landry, Smith

6 really nice DL options who wouldn't count against the comp pick formula

I'm not having this conversation with you again. It will be like groundhog day with the DL conversation. You can't just blindly promote young guys who may or may not be ready to be starters and leave yourself devoid of depth as well. There will be always be decent players available with starting experience who take reasonable deals as free agency slows down.

It’ll still come down to an agents’ biggest bargaining factor: stats. He can bring up the pass rush win rate and double team % all he wants, but Aaron Donald averaged 15 sacks a season in the 5 years before that monster extension. This ain’t Howie’s first Rodeo.

Based on cap increases, my early guess is if no other top DT signs beforehand, he’ll get 4 years 35m$ next April. Thats more than 2nd place Chris Jones by 4m$ a year, and will be in the vicinity of non-Garret guys like Crosby and I think Micah signs for around 36-38

Allen would be great but I have a feeling he's going to 49ers.  Jones makes most sense there probably.  I think Landry might be a buy low situation since people seem obsessed with his bad win rate %.

Maybe we can interest Saleh in Huff

I think drafting an EDGE is necessary. But I am excited to see what Smith and Hunt can do with another year of development

EVeryone is re-signing with their teams. Feeling good that the Eagles can keep more of their guys than expected. Probably not Williams or Sweat, but maybe Becton.

That’s a lot of money for a volatile LB.

Really intrigued by the idea of bringing Hargrave back in to the DT rotation next to Carter. Think it would maximize what he has left in the tank. Wonder what the asking price is?

Hahaha! I think it says more about the talent that was in front of him than the player. To keep him on the roster while they had tough calls with some of the other moves they made speaks a lot.

Coming off of two bad seasons, an injury, and being 32 I can't imagine he's going to be able to demand much.
