The issue with Milton Williams, and the reason to let someone else overpay him, is that it seems highly possible/likely that his success is due to playing next to Jalen Carter. And the best evidence o

Setting market for a possible Dre'Mont Jones signing.  That begs the question if guys who played for Fangio want to play for him again or if he wants them.  Justin Simmons seemed to fwiw

Eh. It’s time to let the young guys eat. Ojulari for the right price would be of interest to me. You spent day two picks on guys like Ringo and Brown. Ojomo will be the new Milton Williams and you have guys like Booker and Young behind Carter/Davis/Ojomo.

It’s not even officially free agency yet. I’m expecting a Jurgens and Reed extension, along with a depth signing or two. Could even see an unforeseen trade for a veteran ala AJ Brown at some point.

There’s a lot of time left in the offseason.

Fine with Ringo getting a shot but Brown would be a massive downgrade

Brown was coming off an injury and could develop BUT yeah I don't see him as a primary plan

I think Schefter is more talking about a big name than anyone at all. They’re going to sign someone. May not be a huge name.

We had 2 impact defensive FA signings last off-season. CJ and Baun, who signed a 1 year 3.5 million dollar contract. All while losing our best EDGE rusher.

Our defensive turnaround wasn't because of high end FA signings (like huff). It was Fangio, young guys stepping up, killing the draft, and finding a diamond for cheap in Baun.

I'm fine trying that strategy again.

Best FA safeties available…

Julian Blackmon. Good in coverage but is a terrible tackler. Sirianni knows him.

Juan Thornhill. Appears to be falling off the cliff.

Justin Simmons. Same. But he has Fangio experience.

Jordan Fuller. Never matched his really good rookie season. Played in a Fangio-like system.

Schultz…

Source: The #Dolphins are re-signing LB Tyrel Dodson to a 2-year, $8.25M deal.

Really solid backer stays in Miami.

Howie will add people to the team who don't come from the draft.  He's just waiting out the market and gauging trades.  Patience is tough.  Even I who know that in my head get antsy but ultimately I know there are moves coming eventually

Is it June 1st when all free agents no longer affect the comp formula (rather than just cuts)? Seems really far away, if I’m remembering correctly…

Loving this off-season so far. Howie learned from 2017. We're in great long-term shape.

Yeah it might not be that long though someone like Justin Simmons could be that long.  I think they'll be reluctant to cancel out the 3 or 4 but the 6 is possible and that covers up to the amount they'd likely spend anyway

Schefter:

"I think they are more likely to shed more salary than acquire more salary. That’s how I feel right now. So, you’re asking if there’s a trick up their sleeve? No, again, I think they are more likely to shed – shed – more salaries, make more moves the other way, more outgoing than incoming, I think.“

This is where Howie has learned from 2018/2019.  And also from seeing how the Bucs destroyed themselves by doing the same thing he did - we're running it back.  A year rebuilding and reshaping is better than years rebuilding and reshaping.

Look at the cap hell the Chiefs are in and how they keep signing mid level OL and hope this one turns around.

Cash is king in all businesses.

It’s the Tuesday following the draft rather than June 1 - agreed, the Rodgers contract allows a bit more flexibility.

This team is a lot younger and set up for long term success than the 2017 one. Built much more from the draft and one with a fewer immediate major expiring contracts, but also with a few major extensions looming in the next 2-3 years.

So while obviously I didn't love his 2018 mindset, it's still a bit hard to compare it to the current situation directly. It's a very different team.

We just won the SB with the 2nd youngest defense in the NFL. What is the problem with going young again?

None of those safeties move the needle or make the team better. I’d rather roll the dice with Sydney Brown and see what he’s got. The starting safety will be acquired via trade…or Marcus Epps.

Absolutely nothing. If you look up I said I'm happy with his strategy so far because it's what worked this year too.

I'm just not as convinced it's all that he "learned from his mistakes" and at least partially related to the starkly different team makeup.

But it has, more than 75% of the top free agents are already in agreement with their new teams. There's not a new crop of free agents coming.

At this point we need to spend the entire draft on D, with maybe a couple picks going to OL and RB for the offense.

Going to be interesting. He usually fills most gaps in FA so that he's not reaching for any particular position in the draft. But he may have future comp picks on his mind also. Maybe a few more trades will go down.

Agree.  He learned some, but he is adapting to the current landscape.  It was just a few years ago when the QBs started getting $30 million+ annual salaries and the thought was how can a team build with such a large % of the cap going to a single player?  Now, teams have to manage a roster with multiple players at $30 million+, with several in the high teens and 20s.  Cost manageable,  young talent that can play is a must.  It's really not an option.

By comparison, the Commanders made some splash moves, but they were all high paid older guys.  They haven't added any youth to their team, in fact, they subtracted youth so far.  They only have 5 picks in this draft (1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th.)  Josh Harris is awesome.

People need to realize that the defense will probably take a step back. Now, we’re talking going from #1 to top 7.

Lot of young guys to play, great problems to have.

I'm skeptical that if the Eagles didn't trade CJGJ that they couldn't afford to extend their guys. That keeping merely one player would totally derail everything. Gonna call fake news on that. I was wondering if I had to choose to keep Blankenship or CJGJ who would I choose. Reed is obviously younger, I think CJGJ is better.

Also one thing to keep in mind is that usually when the Eagles have a great season it's preceded by an active and regarded great offseason. 2017 - Howie crushed the offseason, Super Bowl. 2022 - Howie crushed the offseason was very active Eagles Super Bowl. 2024 - Howie a very active offseason Eagles Super Bowl. 2023 - Eagles lose both coordinators, lose a bunch of free agents, have the epic collapse.

That doesn't mean that will happen in 2025. The Eagles are obviously a lot more stacked and have better coaching(at least on defense, who knows with Patullo), but as Sirianni said you can only be great with the greatness of others. The bottom line is, while much of the stuff the Eagles are doing may be necessary, turning it over to many of the young guys is fine, but if they aren't as good as the Eagles hope, the team is simply not going to be near as good next season. Doesn't mean they can't be a contender, but if the young guys who are about to step in aren't as good as advertised it's going to be trouble.

The best defenders on the Eagles last year were Carter, Baun, Quinyon and Coop. All are back. The DC is back.

We can take a step back and still be a top 10 unit.

Yes, we have lost players.  But what other team is clearly better than us now?

If you didn't know about the 2024 team and looked at the current state of the roster, wouldn't you be impressed?

A SB-winning QB, the best RB, top-5 WR duo, top-5 OL, a top-5 DT, ascending EDGE duo, All-Pro LB, great young CBs, the best DC and OL coach in the league.
