I don’t buy "Eagles were interested in x” anymore. It’s always every damn name.

Howie has said as much.  The Eagles (Howie) will answer calls and even inquire on most free agents that could be a potential signing.  "The potential” part is what varies tremendously- especially in an offseason like this one.

(as in - "will you sign a one year prove it deal?”  - "no way” - "ok thanks for the call, good luck out there”

I don’t think they view CJGJ as core. I think they’ll pay Reed because they do view him that way

That begs the question, who are the core players … across the NFL jhow many players does the typical team core have?

So much money is going out to these guys that they need to maximize their draft picks. You have a lot of players locked up long term and more on the horizon that will need extensions. They are going to try to max the 4 comp picks for next year to increase their chances. I feel they will be going quiet in FA over the next few years.

Not this year. Who else have we been linked to?

Myles Garrett.

If Slay signs elsewhere, does he count towards the comp picks?

No, he would be cut

A former 1st round pick has value to it. I don't even know what you are arguing against. Its very low risk with a decent pay out.

Yes. 5 teams in 5 years.

Err no - former 1st round picks after 3-4 years that are considered "busts” do not have much value - hence the reason we got him for basically a 6th round pick now.

A 6th round pick next year (equivalent to a 7th round pick this year) - that’s his value because that’s what he was just traded for.

It's really all about cash

For Lurie CJGJ’s cash payment is barely a rounding error.

That sounded a lot more like people speculating that the Eagles would have interest. Of course that was never happening.

If nothing else it gives you context for the market. You could quickly identify inefficiencies.

$8M is a rounding error?

CJGJ wasn’t a core player. At all. We just let him walk once before 2 years ago.

Core players: Hurts, Barkley, Brown, Smitty, Lane, Mailata, Dickerson, Jurgens, Carter, Baun, Mitchell, DeJean, Blankenship. Dean, Nolan, Hunt and Ringo might enter the conversation next season.

13 core players.  Sounds about right.

I really don’t get the griping over cash spending/cap or whatever you want to call it. The Eagles are the Yankees/Dodgers of the NFL and spend more cash than any franchise. They still have limits just like any other team/franchise/business. Enjoy it for what it is unless you want to go back to letting Reggie White walk over money days.

Every dollar that Lurie spends on a player eventually becomes a cap hit.

The 4 comp picks they probably get next year:

3rd - Williams

4th - Sweat

*5th - Becton

6th - Rodgers

Some of this is still up in the air with playing time. Rodgers could bump up to a 5th if he gets the starting job, and obviously Becton could still come back leaving them with just 3.

But is still eats up cap space.

I’m frustrated that people don’t get that even the reporters but I guess math isn’t their thing

It’s difficult to get to the max of 4 regardless.  We basically can’t sign anyone and all our guys that left need to get paid and ball out.

"Interested"  from a source. Sure.

Sources link the Eagles to a lot of players.

I don't think people would care as much if they just stood pat, it's letting players go you already have that rubs people the wrong way. Rightly or wrongly. And not past their prime players who are way overpaid, but a good player like CJGJ on a fair deal.

I always thought it was more speculation based as well but Dianna Russini put it out there and she usually doesn’t push speculation.

I don’t want to sound conspiracy theorist but I think most agree Eagles care about public image, probably more than most teams. It’s pretty suspicious the first name S to sign a deal after trading CJGJ is magically "linked” to the Eagles. Or Howie checked on the price and the agent is pushing the issue to make his client seem in demand.

It wouldn’t make much sense to trade CGJG to sign Reid for equal to more money which would affect the comp pick formula.

Speaking of Garrett, nothing in regards to Hendrickson since the news broke. Just dead silence on that front.

And what if standing pat means letting Nolan Smith test free agency and he walks or costs more in the long run?

I hear so many times that the cap doesn’t matter or to trust Howie. This is something they need to just trust Howie. It might not work long term but you can’t pick and choose imo.

Contracts are not designed with evenly spread cap hits.  Players become eligible for extensions. The same group of 53 this season may not be affordable the next.

Yeah but it’s not a legit source unless the source spotted him at the Philly Airport.
