Carroll D. Wright was a prominent statistician employed by the U.S. government, and he did use the expression in 1889 while addressing the Convention of Commissioners of Bureaus of Statistics of Labor. But Wright did not claim that he coined the expression. Boldface added to excerpts by QI:1

The old saying is that "figures will not lie,” but a new saying is "liars will figure.” It is our duty, as practical statisticians, to prevent the liar from figuring; in other words, to prevent him from perverting the truth, in the interest of some theory he wishes to establish.

Can't believe it's page 6 and nobody has mentioned the gorilla in the room. The real test: Hurts' interception-less streak.

Mike, your reading skills are right up there with your NT assessment skills.

More than one expression from more than one source. Sounds like ne’er the twain shall meet.

I’ll own it. I thought we over paid for an rb

I think he ended up throwing an interception near the end of camp. Still ended up putting together the best training camp in the modern era on record.

I think on Tuesday(?), they brought in their draft expert and the guy basically said Campbell is a LB that might be able to do some edge stuff.

It’s like McMullen didn’t even listen at all, and just announced at the end of the interview "sounds like Van Ginkel to me”.

I mean, that basically is Van Ginkel. Yes he had a bunch of sacks this year, but most of his career under Fangio he was a 4-5 sack type of guy.

I think Campbell will play a similar role and have a similar career trajectory.

Yep, he keeps bringing up AVG no matter what anyone else says. The funny thing is, AVG is an edge rusher who drops into coverage at times. Campbell is an off ball LB who rushes the passer at times. We don't know exactly how the Eagles plan to use him but if they use him anything like Alabama did he's not an AVG type player no matter how much that insufferable clown McMullen wants to whine about it.

I wouldn't say a lot of people and he went so far with it that he felt the need to say they should have signed Aaron Jones instead and was spending the entire off-season that the Eagles wouldn't use Saquon enough to justify the contract and then he ended up being one of the biggest bell cows in the league.

AVG is a skilled edge that does some LB stuff… which is what we hope Nolan and Jalyx evolve into. He isn’t showing sideline-sideline range or covering the middle of the field in zone, essentially that’s what Campbell is good at. If we are going to reduce the comparison to just sack numbers, maybe Campbell will be like Milton Williams.

My issue with the AVG thesis is that it ignores JC’s proven strengths and plays to his weaknesses.

If he was really Micah Parsons 2.0 why would Que Robinson be the starting edge this season at BAMA. He’s raw as a pass rusher, doesn’t have great length for that position and can’t hold the edge.

OK...I've been busy and not really into the discussion loop on this, so let me know if it's just a dead horse already. But let's talk Bill Belichick for a minute.

Love him or hate him, call him a great coach, call him a cheater....think what you want. But Patriots SB era Belichick was cold, calculating, and despised frivolous attention and distractions. All business, all the time...and he came down hard on anyone in his circle that wasn't.

Having a 24 year old girlfriend is certainly way off brand for that Bill Belichick. Having a 24 year old girlfriend dictating interviews and sauntering around the practice field in absurd team-themed outfits isn't off brand...something is wrong. This would at least be a little bit more in character if a coach like John Gruden came back and did it. Does no one nationally remember what Bill freaking Belichick was like 10-15 years ago?

I have almost no doubt in my mind that some form of dementia is in play here. This will all come to light when his sons inevitably end up in a legal battle with the girlfriend over his assets.

I figure if the grand scheme was to draft an AVG type player, they would’ve targeted Donovan E or Femi as both have a better build/skillset to play the edge on an every down basis.

Cassette

I don't know how Vic used AVG in Miami. HOWEVER, I watched a ton of Vikings games last year and focussed on AVG when they were on defense as he was my DE in fantasy for one of my teams. AVG lined up as an edge rusher the vast majority of the time, and dropped into coverage once in a while. We don't know exactly how the Eagles plan to use Campbell but if they use him like Alabama did and to his strengths it will be the opposite where he will be lining up at LB most of the time, and come down to play edge in certain packages. McMullen's entire thing is that he insisted for weeks before the draft that Campbell was an edge rusher, ignoring the fact that he is really good in coverage and a lot of his pass rushing usage was as a blitzing LB as well in addition to some snaps at edge. When everyone started saying something different after he was drafted he is just keeps doubling down and whining more and more and louder and louder desperately trying to find someone agrees with him even though nobody does. AVG might do a little bit more in terms of being versatile but Nolan Smith is more like him than Jihaad Campbell.

Watched this movie on Netflix last night about that nurse in New Jersey who was just killing patients in the ICU for fun. But anyway… on the cops… Nnamdi Asomougha. He actually is a decent actor
