Who can really compare, considering the differences in training advancements, full-time dedication to the sport, nutrition advancements, etc. etc. How do you compare them?To throw into the arena a contender for greatest RB in franchise history, Steve Van Buren led the team to back to back championships in 1948 and 1949. He was also the first running back to ever have multiple 1000 yard rushing seasons in his career and he was the all-time leading rusher in the NFL when he retired. It's hard to compare him to today's running backs, because the game is so different. Back then the game was much more about '3 yards and a cloud of dust', and teams routinely had 8+ defenders in the box. 1000 yards had only been achieved once before Van Buren in 1947, Beattie Feathers in 1934. And he did it twice in 3 seasons... and the season in between, he surpassed 940 yards, once again leading the NFL (he led the league in 1945, 1947-1949... that's 4 rushing crowns in 5 years, which is quite a rare feat in any era).In essence, Steve Van Buren was Jim Brown, before Jim Brown. So, I can't say that any current day Eagles' running back is better than Van Buren, until they achieve similar levels of rarified feats. They may be, but how do you compare? The game is so different. Van Buren was 6'0" 200lbs. Back then OL were only up around 220. So, Van Buren was the size of today's RBs playing with OL and DL that are 100 lbs lighter than today. He was a man among boys. While he never got a 40 yard dash, he did run a 100 yard dash at 9.8 seconds. For comparison, Jesse Owens ran 9.4 seconds at only 165 lbs.I tend to think the transcendent talents like SVB could play in any era. If he were alive today, with modern training programs, diets, supplements, etc. he would weigh more and run faster. So he would probably translate into being 6 feet and 215 pounds or so and easily run in the 4.3’s.Linemen is the more interesting comparison because of the obvious weight differences. I wonder what the average height was back then? Because a lot of today’s NFL lineman weren’t 300+ pound monsters coming out of high school. Again, they tend to balloon up in weight as training programs put them on a multiyear bulking program starting late in high school. You look at linemen after they retire and a lot of them drop 50-70 pounds after they retire, so their "natural” weight is more like 6’4” 240.
1 hour ago1 hr They're negotiating through Twitter now. These absolute Fing greedy children. Figure it out, Fwads.
1 hour ago1 hr Kotite did one thing right on day 1 in hiring Bud Carson. He never did another thing right in 4 years. In the same way Barry Switzer did nothing for the Cowboys.Kotite never lead anyone. They should ask his former players about that. I'd start with Kyle Brady.Brady would call back to Penn State to get coaching because he got none from Kotite and his dunces.Kotite tried to blame Randall but he was 4-35 in his last 39 games.I'm not sure anyone in sports has ever been worse than that.Randall went on to miss the SB by a kicker shank after a 13-1 season in Minnesota.
