I don’t know, just seems like a move you make in a different situation. You bring in a young guy with upside that’s never called plays into a win now team where the head coach might be gone in a year? I think they needed an established play caller with this win now roster and Sirianni possibly being on a short lease.

Agree, which makes the move weird to me. Obviously I hope it works out great.

I really don’t have a strong opinion on Mannion beyond 1) it’s really risky since he hasn’t called … and if he doesn’t call plays here we riot, and 2) I prefer an upside swing rather than Nagy.

Mannion has an interesting background with some top offensive minds. I wonder if he will lean into the LaFleur/Shanahan style offense. If so, could Frank Smith be in play as the run game coordinator? Could Grizzard be in play as a PGC? We need to stock the cupboard.

I doubt Mannion would be a legit HC candidate next season, but if he’s good, the clock will be ticking, and Sirianni would still be here and need a playcaller.

Big difference though is he comes from completely outside the system. It won’t be mixing orange with orange trying to make a new color

If Mannion were to come in and do a great job and the Eagles offense is even in the 10-15 range he will be fast tracked to a head coaching job. That would be a "good problem" to have though. Like any candidate I was going to keep an open mind as much as possible but I can't stress enough how much I prefer a risk/reward hire like this over a Nagy or JBC. I came into this saying they needed someone with play calling experience but once McDaniel, Daboll, Monken, and Brady weren't options a big swing like this started to make a lot more sense.

Not his only source. But with what he said the logical conclusion is it came from the team. Why would some random source not associated with the team say "the hunger from the Front Office to improve is legit”?

I’ll say this about LaFleur: That guy can absolutely scheme the hell out of the passing game for shot plays and manufactured touches for his best players. I hope Mannion took great notes.

This FO has nice track record with external hires. It's been the promotions from within (Groh, Johnson, Patullo) that generally fail.

I'm not doing cartwheels, but I'll keep an open mind. While I do believe more experience would have been ideal, I think the most important thing is how well he knows offense. The biggest thing I want to see is improvement in the offense from game 1 to game 17. I actually didn't think the biggest issue with Patullo was lack of experience, I thought it was lack of improvement from game 1 to game 18.

If Mannion is a failure in that regard, then we're likely cleaning house next year anyway.

I actually like the coach. Just not for us.

I can’t imagine a 33 year old with no play calling experience being able to fight off Sirianni enough to avoid the dreaded Siri offense returning.

Reid, Pederson, and Steichen all figured out how to call plays after they arrived in Philly. Although, it took them a season to become very good.

If Mannion is that hot of a commodity and seen as a rising star who comes in here only to unleash the Eagles offense, I see no reason why he couldn't be the next HC of the Eagles too.
