Not sure I agree that S isn’t a premium position in this defense. I would also suggest that one of the top players in the draft is a S this year.

Let’s look at offensive players. Other than TE, you are probably looking at back up players. Maybe a starting slot. Not a great draft for OT. Not sure any OT worth a first is available at 23. Entire OL is returning though so unless Lane’s foot injury derails that, you are looking at a back up this year. Decent day three TE draft this year. Maybe Sadiq in the first. Unless Brown is traded, I doubt a first round WR. I think all three of those positions get drafted.

Look I will always be a BPA guy. That could be a S or OLB and I have no issue with that. Maybe even a #2 CB.

Also have to remember Fangio may only be here for one more year. So I wouldn't exactly put a ton into drafting players Fangio loves. The Eagles general philosophy has been to focus on premium positions. QB, OL, DL, WR, CB. They deviated a bit last draft where they went LB first, S second and it was their worst draft in several years. Perhaps coincidentally, but I don't believe draft picks can be viewed in a vacuum. They have to be viewed on conjunction with how you build the rest of the roster and I don't know where else based on the Eagles cap situation that they can adequately address those other more premium positions than the draft. Or trading draft picks for guys. I think they can ill afford to use their best pick on a safety right now.

And for a season that I'm not even convinced will be a season of contention right now. 2026 being a reset year is absolutely in the cards based on how some other things go.

Not worth trading for with that 4th overall pick in the draft contract.

Are you insane? Dude had a perfect RAS score!!!!

What are the chances RTK hangs himself with his strap on if AJ is on the Eagles next season? The guy sure hates a great player

Howie will flip a 2027 6th rd for him. Qb factory is back in biz

If we are trading Brown do not send him to the Bills or Pats send him somewhere terrible.

I don’t believe brown will be dealt this year. It’ll be next year

More like at 23 or maybe even trade up. 100% on board , best news I read today

With the way things are, I think they more likely go OL in RD1 and then maybe trade up to top of RD2 for him if he's still available.

Max Klare, an athletic TE who can block well and was an afterthought at Ohio State apparently has a 99.6 on field athleticism score from PFF. Whatever that is. But yes you can see the guy can move when he was actually used on offense prior to transferring to Ohio State.

I think this strategy of team building is highly flawed. It works if you continue to nail your drafts. And the Eagles luckily have done that between 2021 and 2024. But if your drafting starts to level out, this philosophy isn't going to hold up. Because if you start missing on draft picks, then those low salary guys will have to come from free agency and the hit rate on lower salary free agents is infinitesimal. Meanwhile there are plenty of mid salary guys who can blossom into pro bowl level players for you. The rate for that is much higher.

If that's Howie's golden philosophy going forward, it feels like it's built on a house of cards and whenever the drafting regresses to the mean, it's going to collapse. For example, if the Eagles lose Jaelan Phillips in free agency, then what... you'd rather sign a guy like David Ojabo for dirt cheap than pivot to a guy like Boye Mafe or someone like that? We saw it blow up in their face in 2025 at TE. All those low salary fliers at TE failed miserably. Howie needs to adjust this strategy, I don't think it'll age well.

The highly flawed strategy that led to 5 straight playoff appearances and 2 SB appearances?

I mean it's all explained in the post. It works if you continue to draft well. The Eagles crushed like 4 drafts in a row between 2021 and 2024. We'll see how well this philosophy holds up if their draft luck inevitably starts regressing to the mean and those low salary guys on the roster are no longer young stud rookies, but bum free agents picked up off the scrap heap. We saw the first makings of it in 2025. Ojulari, Bryant, Granson, Uche, Adoree, Kenyon Green, etc. All of them sucked except Adoree and he was mediocre at best.

If the Eagles continue to crush all their drafts, the strategy will continue to work. Drafts are crap shoots and we'll see how great this strategy works when they start having drafts that don't pan out.

hmm... maybe theyd adjust if they had to?

And maybe theres a risk you are ignoring in your strategy, like- mid priced free agents flop, as do cheap free agents, as do high priced free agents.

However, the low priced band aids, sometimes hit, and when they dont theyre easy to replace. The mid-tier guys, youll be stuck longer.

Theres no one way that is right. But its pointless to complain about anything Howie does because hes proven he can do it. And hes proven he can do it again. So hes also proven, its no fluke.

I'm all for drafting any prospect with their own theme song:

Everything's pointless, this is a message board. I'm giving my opinion on what I think of his strategy and that I don't think the success that they've had operating this way will be sustainable. We'll see going forward.

Nothing in the NFL is sustainable. But repeatable is great and Howie has shown his method is at least that.

Well if a guy like Phillips walks, hopefully they are willing to bend a bit on their philosophy, because adding to Edge with minimum salary guys a year ago was a disaster. It'll be a big need for them if he leaves. You always gotta be flexible and that's my main point. In very few instances in sports should teams have a strict policy on roster building with no room for deviations. But the Eagles have done it to an extreme of late, we'll see if it evens out a bit.

Every single strategy requires the team to draft reasonable well. There is no NFL strategy that works and constantly missing on draft picks unless your QB is Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady.

This makes little sense. When they added Phillips, they demonstrated a flexibility you are claiming they don't have.

T-Rex possible concerns in this years draft

My point is they need to be flexible and be willing to alter course and not just arbitrarily hold to a strategy just because. Some offseasons it may suit them but others it may not.

I remember telling people for years the Eagles need to spend an offseason or two focusing less on the lines and bolstering the back 7. People would tell me that they don't and investing heavily on the lines every year has worked for them, so why change? In 2024 they spent an offseason loading up on the back 7, took a CB in round 1 for the first time in over 20 years, and they win a Super Bowl that season, largely because they had the best back 7 in the NFL. Change can be good. And no philosophy should be blindly followed regardless of circumstance. I believe the Eagles will need to deviate from this philosophy at some point. Hopefully they're willing to.
