With our cap space it makes sense to see what’s out there for him. Anything less than a 3 would be disappointing, but I’m not sure a team would want to pay that plus pay him $10M next year.

Not sure. Our defense works only when the DL is playing great.  A heavy rotation helps them play great.  With injuries at DT, do you want to thin out DE as well?

Am I alone in not wanting to move Barnett? I guess a 2nd rounder is good value for him, but I dunno, I like how he's played this year and he's still very young (relatively speaking). The only real issue I have is that he is a bonehead, who takes insanely dumb penalties and seems to try and instigate fights with other teams.

No, but I won't lose any sleep over it either way

Well it will be interesting to see how the Dodgers do the next few years.  The monkey is off their back now and the pressure is off a little so they should play free.  If they can win another WS soon it will show they are for real and not just because it was a short season.

I kinda wish MLB would shorten their season.  162 is too many and nobody really cares about regular season.  Maybe cut it to 120.

I wouldn’t cut it to 120 but I would definitely cut it. I go to 140. The extra 22 games aren’t gonna make a difference. Plus if you cut it to 140, then you can started at the end of April so you’re not dealing with all the weather crap that goes on at the end of March and beginning of April.

The dodgers should be up there for the next couple years. I think they got to worry about the Braves getting really good. And the Padres with their farm system could be ridiculously good for the next five years too. I was surprised they were as good as they were this year. But you can see them coming. The rest of the NL west is a mess tho. I kind of feel like the Rockies are going to trade Nolan Arenado relatively soon. The Diamondbacks sold everyone so they’re in a rebuild. And San Francisco’s light years away from being a title contender

Well there it is. Had a feeling the Seahawks were going to trade and acquire a pass rusher. They were desperate for any type of pass rusher.

I think this is a fair question. It may be out of Doug's hands and if it is, that's a problem.

Not at all alone. A 2nd rounder is most likely to never reach the production we are getting from Barnett when he is on the field. He is only 24. There’s rookies that come into the league at 23-24.

From a cap perspective, the defense is already way underweight on the eagles cap. If anything we should be focusing on shedding offense cap.

I am not sure where trading Barnett makes the team any better this year or in 2021.  They would need to replace him with either a FA or another top 100 draft pick.  He is going to cost less than a FA of his same caliber.  Without Barnett, the future of the position looks to be Josh Sweat and that's it.  I would rather they have Barnett and Sweat with the option to move on from Graham in 2021 than have Sweat, Graham and a need at the position.

Then he can sit on the bench. JP can't insert himself into the starting lineup, that's absurd.

Peters has his money; that was the Eagles doing their bit.  Now Peters needs to play at whichever position the team needs him — and I think he will

I’m talking value in general if they were to move him. And if they don’t think they can afford his $10M deal next year why not make a move for a premium pick?

JP didn't force anyone to do anything. He took advantage of a situation where he had a lot of leverage because they had no other option at LT. Now, he has zero leverage. Play RG or get Fed.

Interesting theory. I believe whoever takes on cooper takes on a 10 mil cap hit this year and next 20

I have mixed feelings on Barnett. He's young and he's ok. But he makes bonehead plays sometimes and is always injured. I'd trade him if it's a good offer, but not unload him for just anything. And if you keep him you have to do something with that $10M option next year. I really don't think you can let him just play on it like they did with Agholor.

For you 76ers fans.

What leverage would the Eagles have though? Barnett could possibly command $10M a year based on what guys like Shaq Lawson got. The cap makes projecting his salary more difficult admittedly.

Less than $10M this year, you are looking at around $5M and $20M next year. Cowboys actually structured this one not too bad where trading him after giving him a huge contract works. Only thing is they take a bit of a hit with dead money. About $7M this year and $8M next year, but they open up $5M of cap space this year.

A 10M cap hit would make Derek Barnett roughly the 32nd highest paid EDGE in the NFL peer AAV. That includes guys he's much better than (Vernon, Hughes, Addison, Lawson). I'll argue he's better than Floyd/Dunlap/Fowler/Ford. At worst, he's in that range.

Barnett's 2020 cap hit for the team acquiring him is about 1.2M. That's nothing.
For 2021, the majority of teams can handle a 10M EDGE contract. Those that can't can always extend him and reduce the 2020 number.

All Cowboy compliments need to go to CVON.

This is your first warning.

I'm not a Barnett fan, but it's almost at the point where they have to extend him. I think he's done enough and if you look at the position they're pretty bare there. Graham has played really well this year, but you can't count on that for next season. Sweat looks decent, but is still a question mark. And this team has too many holes to spend a first or a second on a DL.

The deal was actually structured well. I mentioned that when they provided all the information. After two years they can get out of that contract with only 6 million dead money and $16 million savings. Or you could trade him and save a ton of money in 2022 when you think cd lamb is ready to take over. Not only do you save a bunch of money you also get draft capital back for him. If they’re able to trade Cooper it allows them to also likely extend Gallup. have lamb and Gallup as of two outside wide receivers and get one of the other wide receivers in the slot

To be clear, Caplan said teams are interested in Barnett, not that the Eagles are shopping him.

They could sign him to an extension and lower the number. If you pull it off the table completely then he's probably walking.
