Because if the receiving team knows the rules, they have a guy on a sprint call a fair catch and come up to catch it.

I think it is punt rules.  After the cowpads touched it then an Eagle touched it, it was a dead ball.

Its kickoff rules.  You can fair catch any kickoff as well, but not after it bounces, which is why most onsides kicks start with a bounce, because its a live ball.  The pooch kick is supposed to be defended by the guys on the second line to get under it to catch it and call a fair catch.   They blundered it.

They did, but if you play safe on a bounce kick/onside you're letting people fly downfield if you move Ward upfield to combat that.  Big brained.

Not sure what the wind situation is, but Jake needs a confidence boost so I'd send him out if it's not too windy.
