I think Doug will have another year to get it right. However, I thought the same for Chip Kelly and was shocked when he got canned.

I’m getting the feeling Doug’s job is less secure than I think.

Keeping him after this season is just delaying the inevitable, unless you believe he is capable of rebuilding the offense into a top 10 unit and getting the team back to a 12-4 or 11-5 position in future seasons — which I surely don’t

Can’t be a top tackle playing 8 games and leaving half of them.  His ability on the field is becoming irrelevant.

So your belief is that even after getting surgery he is not going to be worth keeping?

They're in a no-win situation with Hurts. You put him in and he's awful, you could hurt his development long-term and you get a second media/fan firestorm over a wasted premium draft pick. You put him in and he actually plays like an NFL QB, you look like idiots for allowing Carson Wentz to continue playing like the worst starter in the league and you're on the hook for that contract.

Yes

I would take a long look at what the draft pick penalty would be to remain over the cap in 2021.  I'm sure it would be pretty bad and the grievances from the players would also be pretty bad.

But if it were a 2nd round pick just to be over the cap for the year (it would be a lot worse, otherwise teams would go over the cap)...for one year...I'd eliminate all the bad contracts.  Take enormous hits in 2021 just to get everyone off the books.

They have been in a "no win" situation since they picked him. Frivolous and wasted pick .

I mean can you blame that level of thinking? This team has been screwed over by injuries for years now

When someone gets injured we automatically think they'll be out for an extended period of time or just gone for the season

Since we have no chance of getting a top 2 pick to take Lawrence or Fields, best case scenario is we lose out and end up with the #3 overall pick.

Take LT Penei Sewell.  Supposedly a generational talent in the mold of Anthony Munoz.  Would be a great start at solidifying our crumbling OL.

It's not possible to be "over the cap", however the team should definitely eat ALL the dead money it can in 2021 to clear the slate for a new start in 2022.  I don't care if we have to take $100M in dead cap in 2021, just get it all over with in one season so we're set for the future.

Doug is not going to survive.  Question now is does Howie accept someone else (experienced and proven) evaluating talent and running the draft / personnel from now on.  New coach will get a chance to turn around Wentz next season.  If Wentz is still flailing then, then he will get benched and ultimately cut / traded after next season.  End of the road.

Not blaming just clarifying

That’s not how it works

Probably going 3 to the Bengals. They aren't winning another game.

So then you have Mailata at RT if Lane is done?

They just have to win 1 game for us to pass them.  We should win the tiebreak to pick higher in the case of a tied record.

Sure.  Lane can't be relied on.  I wouldn't mind moving on from him if we can get value in trade.

There's gotta be something going on with Carson that we don't know about. I wouldn't be shocked at all if this turns into Andrew Luck 2.0.

We are >$65m over the cap next year...that's as is.

The Wentz/Lane Johnson/Brooks/Cox contracts....those deals will make the 2021 cap situation worse than it already is if they were to get out.

The Alshon/Desean/Malik Jackson contracts...those deals will only save money to help get under the 2021 cap if they unload millions against 2022.  If you eat all the dead money for 2021, then you gain zero ground of the $65m we need to account for.

We can't even cut players to get under the cap next year.  It just needs to be offloaded against 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Well, I guess one would hope that there is more to the story. Would it surprise you if there wasn't?

This is true. They have the Giants, Dallas, Miami, Pittsburgh, Houston and Baltimore left.

Burrow gone for the year.

I don't see them winning another game.

Sounds like a plan. IF they can get to #3

I previously agreed completely, but after looking up the numbers, Lane is untradeable.

He's on the books for $17.85m next year.  Trade him during the offseason and his number (for us) balloons to $29.4m....so of the untold millions of cap space we need to clear, we'd be losing another ~11.6m by trading him.  Trade him after 6/1 and you get the full >$17m hit we'd have had if we just kept him...and the cherry on top for us would be $21.3m of dead cap in 2022.

If we want the cap savings to > the dead cap, he can't be traded until 2025.  He's going to have prosthetic limbs by then.  Just outstanding cap work Howie.  Truly outstanding.

Pryor is going to need a lot of help handling Carlos Dunlap.

Meh, there will be 10,000 sacks and 10,000 angry posters that Carson holds the ball too long. Next week rinse and repeat. Eventually we won't have to worry about Doug benching Carson because he'll be dead.
