There are a lot better players you can get for a 4. So not only did Howie fail in properly valuing him, he also failed in the fit in this defense. 

Howie's process is about taking shots at traits. 4th round hit rate is about 25%.
What's most frustrating is that Avery IS built to rush off the edge as a situational pass rusher. No reason we couldn't use him.

Yup. Hitting on Sweat + Toohill with missing on Avery + Miller is still a win in the big-picture. That's an above average hit rate given draft capital.

There's no way Doug will put up with 6-7 weeks of what Wentz did last week.  The OL obviously had its problems but the biggest problem was Wentz doing everything he could to lose the game.

Wentz hasn’t played very many bad games in his career.  Sitting him and a $32M contract down in Week 2 isn’t a short leash — it’s a choke collar for both him and the organization

Traits? Fast but terribly undersized and bad vs the run? I liked trading for him when it was first reported as a late round pick. A four? Ehhhh. That was shocking. And we got nothing for it.

On a per snap basis he has been more than starter worthy even last year.  Last week was the first time we saw him handle a full starter load and he looked damn impressive.  We;ll see if he can handle it through a full year, but right now I think he's already more than capable of being a starting DE in this league with the added bonus of continuing to be on a positive development trajectory.

Sooner than expected but saw this coming.  The reason for drafting hurts, a strong back up QB for years, starts today.

Toohill over Avery.  Avery demonstrated he can’t play the run and if we are going to have that from a backup DE, they activate the better pass rusher.

Yeah I’d be willing to bet doug doesn’t change the starting QB before week 6-7 if wentz was struggling. If you believe the eagles who are on the hook for a ton of dead money the next two years With wentz would pull wentz to start hurts without giving him 4-5 games considering they had no preseason and working out with his WRs for A little over a month behind a makeshift offensive line Then more power too you. They might pull wentz in a game. But they wouldn’t bench him after 3 weeks.

I think when you’re trading for a player, you sure as hell better hit better than 25 percent of the time.

Missing on Miller happens. Fourth round picks wash out. You shouldn’t miss this spectacularly on a player you trade for. 

Opeta is inactive, what was the need to sign him to the roster?

Yeah he’s on that fringe where when his contract is up he’s probably not worth starter money but he’s better than a backup. Similar to Curry and Beau Allen a few years ago

I agree they'll keep giving him chances because they foolishly gave him that massive contract.  However drafting Hurts was a shot across the bow.  They may very well bench Wentz for Hurts mid-game if Wentz plays stupid like he did last week.

And they won't need to wait 6-7 weeks to make a permanent change.  Wentz will get himself hurt again with stupid plays well before that just like he usually does.

The NFL's biggest problem remains concussions and CTE.  A generation from now when football drops out of the top 10 most popular youth sports because of this, that lack of participation may potentially trickle up to spectators at the professional level.

That's a long-term problem though.

Last Sunday I spine boarded a 9 year old after a helmet to helmet late hit to the back of his head. 

He was released from the ED that night,  and saw peds ortho the next day because his legs weren't feeling right. 

I caught up with that doctor later in the week and he said he still left the kid in his cervical collar, and the kid was still wacked out of his mind. He kept repeating himself during the appointment.

 

That's a hell of a thing to see in a 9 year old.

Cause you think a rookie during a covid offseason who’s had less time with his WRs and less snaps in training camp wouldn't struggle? Your original point is doug would make the move cause he sees wentz is costing him his job. I don’t see doug putting his faith into a rookie unless forced too by injury but that wasn’t your original point. I think doug would pull him if week 5 and we are still seeing the same thing over and over. I’m doubting that happens

Probably a combination of pressure on Pryor, protection and open competition for the back up G position, which becomes highly relevant with all three of our Cs starting on the line.

I think he has a lot more potential than those guys but we'll see. We always knew he was going to be a project, but this year will be telling.
