we probably needed a competent coaching staff to find out.

When the GM makes a trade ad the coaching staff doesn't know how to use the guy, then the GM is just doing things on his own and not collaborating.  Stupid way to operate and shows a complete disconnect.

So, you cant really know which trade was better.

I 100% Blame Schwartz for Avery. Avery plays one full game this year and gets 2 sacks, then never sees the field.

Tate cost a 3rd, but brought back a 4th round comp pick. Is the delta (deviation) between the two picks worth one playoff win? We don't beat Chicago without him.

It was a round later and a year later, so essentially a 3rd for a 5th.   I blame the coaches and the GM for not communicating.

Trick question.  Both were stupid.

While I think it's time to move on from Howie and Peddy, I also think it's a great opportunity for a young GM/HC combo to do a quick turnaround - there's actually a bunch of talent left even after you move out the obvious veterans.

2021.  DeSean, Peters, Malik and Jeffrey gone. Ertz traded. If the cap permits, I hold on to Lane and Brooks if their physicals are fine, both are top 5 if healthy.

QB: Wentz, Hurts

RB:  Sanders, Scott, Howard/power back

WR:  Reagor, Fulgham, Hightower, Watkins, Ward, add a veteran WR on one year deal or draft pick

TE:  Goedert, ??? , Rodgers/Perkins, need a #2, Rodgers can't block so you need someone who can backup Goedert

OL:  Mailata - Seumalo/Driscoll - Kelce/Seumalo - Brooks - Lane, Dillard, Herbig, Prince, Juriga, Toth, draft a guard [Pryor gone, will Kelce return?]

DL:  Graham - Hargrave - Cox - Barnett, Ridgeway, Williams, Sweat, Ostman [Curry, Avery probably gone]

LB:  Edwards, Singleton, Taylor, Bradley, Riley [Gerry gone]

CB:  Slay, ???, Maddox, LeBlanc, Jacquet, Arnold, - need a starting CB

S:  McLeod, Wallace, Mills, Epps, Ford - need a FS to groom to replace McLeod

This wouldn't be a great team, but it would be competitive in a relatively weak division with the right HC.

Won't have the money to sign even 2nd tier FAs, but smart GM only needs to find a few hidden gems among SFAs and UDFAs.

By 2022, a good chunk of the cap overhang will be gone, and you can look at moving out some of Brooks, Lane, Graham, Cox, Slay to make cap room.

The biggest needs are #1 WR, #2 TE and starting CB, otherwise young depth to develop.

Mills is gone as no money to resign, same with Riley and Ridgeway.
OL is more likely Dillard, Driscoll/Seumalo, Seumalo/Kelce, Brooks/?, Mailata/Lane(? On health).

Its kinda like getting a BJ when you have ED. It may not work, but were you actually wrong to try?

Interesting analogy... speaking from experience?

But... to play that analogy out... you spent the money for that that might have been used for a prescription to fix that problem.

But you cant go to the drug store and get the rx at such a great value. Howie was a killer on the trade market for many years. And who knows. Maybe with a competent coaching staff, those moves are home runs.

Maybe with a competent drafting GM, those trades aren't necessary.

looking back at it, i think the f.o. were trying to be the smartest guys in the room again.  they wanted to protect themselves from a wentz injury and have a capable backup.  as much as sudfeld has come along, i do not think he's at the level of foles in a backup capacity where he can lead a team to multiple wins if counted upon.  sudfeld is truly the emergency qb in the room.

and they did not want another foles situation, so they did not get a veteran to be a backup.  i think the f.o thought drafting someone would be seen as someone who'll be a bench contributor / package type guy.  i think the f.o. failed to see the optics of picking hurts at that point in the draft or did not care.

and with the way this season has gone, the f.o. and coaching staff are failing to see a LOT.  they are now in a boat where wentz may not have faith in the coaching staff to support him.  who starts next year will be a BIG question.  if doug and co. are not ish-canned this offseason, whoever they pick to start will damage the other qb.  even if they say this year was a throwaway and go with wentz, wentz will forever have the idea in his head that doug's staff can bench him going forward.

if it's a new coaching staff, they have the joy of having 2 qbs and probably a decision already made due to wentz's contract.  i'd hope they try and fix wentz and actually get coaches to help his mechanics and make plays that take advantage of his strengths as a player.  do what probably reich and defilippo did in 2017.  see what worked for wentz and keep doing that.  maybe get a running game along the way too.  having sanders touch the ball more will greatly take pressure off of wentz.

Regarding the Jenkins comments, if Howie didn’t crap the bed and attach himself to older vets past their prime like Alshon, Peters, Sproles, and DeSean, they probably keep Jenkins. He was snake-bitten by those guys. I don’t think Jenkins would have made a difference for the team this year regarding their record since this offense is abysmal, but he was probably the one guy in that group of older vets that could have still contributed.

I wonder who the second team was going to be?     Howie talks to a lot of people and he knows 2 teams without even thinking about it that would love to get their hands on Wentz. Colts is the clear choice but I wonder who the second would be.   Patriots would be my guess?

I think also the niners would be in play.

Just saying if your dog was still doing that after five years then maybe you didn’t do a very good job with your dog in training.

Which is why we have so many dogs dying in shelters in the first place

Thankfully Douglas is gone

This is an incredible comment.

Yes ,getting a soft BJ doesn't cost me a 3rd round pick...

Niners have work to do to get there I think Colts and Patriots have direct access to a starting job and cap space to take on wentz contact without having to do anything. 49ers would have to make a decision about there QB before even entertaining the idea of Wentz

Doesn't seem like you are saying it's your opinion here. Plus if you want i can dig up the one where you claimed to read about it.

Lol no one cares at this point but you so do whatever makes you happy.

I think the niners probably already have made that decision on if Jimmy g is or isn’t the guy to go forward tbh.

1000%. His next years cap hit is $26.4M. His dead cap if cut is $2.8M. It’s not a hard decision at all.

I think the best course of action with the team, particularly Carson Wentz, going forward is similar to what Kevin Stefanski and the Browns have done with Baker Mayfield. Build a strong running game around Carson to take as much of the pressure off him as possible. Let's try to get him back on track. Hopefully this will reset his panicked brain a bit and slow everything down again. Sort of like one step back in order to start taking steps forward.

If a team does offer a 1st or high 2nd in a trade for Wentz, I would certainly consider that as well. I also wonder if Carson even wants to be here going forward.

Carson has the talent, the right attitude, the cerebral mindset a top QB needs. He's just taken a beating and has had very little help the last 3 years.

I'm not confident he will become the QB we need him to be again, but we should try asking a little less of him in 2021 and then begin taking the training wheels off slowly if all goes well.

We might as well try because he's going to cost us a good chunk of cap the next two years regardless.

This should have always been the plan.  Wentz has always been at his best with a workload of 30 throws, give or take.  Doug’s fatal flaw has been asking Wentz to carry the entire offense with his right arm.

There are very few NFL QBs who achieve regular success throwing the ball 40+ times.  Mahomes, Rodgers, Brees, Brady — maybe Deshaun Watson; although the Texans have never won anything.  Even Sean McVay and Jared Goff will hit a brick wall unless they find a reliable running game.  Same is being said right now about the Steelers.
