A 3-4 system for a team that doesn't value LBs isn't the way to go unless Howie decides to change his philosophy.

If a 3-4 is on the table, you can feel fairly confident that Howie's job is also on the table for discussion.

Yea I’m not buying that. He’s had strong linebackers everywhere he’s been and even had decent ones when he got here at first with Hicks, Bradham and Kendricks. He plays his favorites for sure but he also got dealt bad hands here with player personnel.

Hicks wasn't  his guy, Chip drafted him, Bradham was but he got older and lost it and they never replaced him. Kendricks definitely was not one if his favorites for whatever reason. He had Fort under his watch and couldn't even recognize he was the best linebacker at the time. Inexcusable

If Press Taylor isn't fired at a minimal, then all hope is lost until they truly tear it down

Oh yeah 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks. So much investment.

Spending 15M/3rd/5th on Slay IS a big investment.
Giving Hargrave 3Y/39M IS a big investment.

Our biggest moves of the 2020 off-season were on the defensive side of the ball. Hell, most of the blog wanted to pass on Hargrave and/or Slay to get veteran WR help.

Not necessarily talking Eagles, but NFL jobs as a whole — I’d hire Jim Schwartz as a head coach long before I’d ever hire Josh McDaniels

We would value OLB greatly if we went to a 3-4.

Singleton, and TJ Edwards would be just fine. Sweat would be a scary rush OLB with his speed and strength. Youd just need to figure out the other side. Gennard Avery would probably be well suited to the role.

Youre really pretty set for starters.

DL of Cox, Hargrave, and Jackson is nice too.

I’m guessing his assertion is that Schwartz would have been interested in HC if Doug were fired, and the only way Doug would be okay with losing out would be an assurance it won’t affect his job security?

The flaw in this is that Doug coached out of desperation all season by playing Jeffery, Peters, and DJax.  He’d have gone with younger guys if he felt more secure.

It’s also possible that Howie/Lurie have given Schwartz and Doug the heads up that the organization is planning to go with a completely different coaching direction next season.

Whatever he’s alluding to seems like a reach to me.

I do agree that the cap spending is really skewed by backloaded contracts.

Tell me again how you want to draft another WR at 6 overall after taking one in the first last year and in the 2nd the year before.

They might not have invested in draft picks but they invested big money or spent money on defense via FA and made trades. Slay, hargrave, Bennett, jenkins, mcleod, Graham, Chris long, Jernigan (before he got hurt), Barnett scheduled to make 10 mil next year on his 5th year option. They also brought in LJ fort that they screwed up and paid bradham big money at a position they routinely ignore. It’s not as if they haven’t spent money on that side of the ball or attempted to bring in talent

Should they invest more high round picks on defense? Of course. However acting like they haven’t thrown money at the defense in attempts to bring in or keep guys or fix the defense is untrue.

What I dont understand and maybe someone can explain to me, is how are they 30th in money allocating to defense?  Dont they have a lot of money tied into Cox, Hargrave, Graham, Slay and McLeod?  Maybe Malik Jackson too...not sure what he makes.

Probably going off cap hits, in which case Hargrave, Slay, Graham, McLeod really don’t take much up. Barnett, Maddox, every LB is on rookie deals too.

He was excellent in 2016 and 2017. He was mostly excellent in the playoffs too.

He certainly was better than slightly above average in his time here.

Big-picture, agreed. There was a noticeable decline after the SB run..and it wasn't just personnel.

Without Schwartz, the possibility of Saleh is HC is now on the table.

Any talk of the Eagles not having enough picks on defense or cap spending is absurd.

In 2020, Slay's cap hit is 4.3M. Hargrave's is 3.45M. That's because they're backloaded contracts. Using cap spending to say that Schwartz did a good job with limited resources is crazy.

Keep in mind that the team use 2017 2nd, 3rd, 2018 3rd, 4th on CBs (Jones, Douglas, Darby, Maddox). Again, legitimate resources. We have the most expensive DL in the NFL. We paid Bradham. For a time, we had a top 5 most expensive safety combo in the NFl. We traded a 2020 3rd/5th for Slay.

Jim Schwartz was average/slightly above-average. Any notion that he was excellent is misguided

Preach man preach.

I'm not sure how other people feel but you can find good players in the 3rd and 4th round.

With the way the league is going, offense is just more important. That's why QB, WR and O-line are usually the top picks.  Only positions you would use a 1st on would be DL, mostly edge rusher and CB.

The WR taken in the 2nd the year before is a bust.  That's why they need another one.  If JJAW actually played and played well then we wouldn't need another WR.  That's on Howie.  Jury is still out on Reagor.

Just my opinion, but I think this, and weighing opting out vs playing, is overthinking it. Chase is going to show up to the combine. He’ll either show he has kept up with himself and will be in tremendous shape or let himself go somewhat. He’ll go through all the drills that will mostly answer all the questions.

I'm not judging him on the Combine.   I want to judge him on a football field.   I can't do that.   Chase had one stud season.  That's it.  Lots of one year wonders have busted in the NFL.  Would be nice to have seen him do it again, or at least close to it.   We saw nothing.

I wonder how much was Howie, how much was Schwartz and how much was just a disconnect between them.

No matter really, get rid of everyone!

I think we are going to get some really juicy dirt coming soon about the organizational structure once they clean house.

No.

I don’t think it changes anything.

And I don’t want a defensive HC.

Well, under this scenario the blog can debate top 5 draft picks in 2020 and again in 2021

maybe the Dline coach from the Bills

I could understand not wanting Rex as HC but as DC hell yeah I take him. He’ll never settle for DC though.

I hope this means Howie is gone.
