If this ends up a meh year defensively I’m fine with moving on from Schwartz. I don’t think the defense is loaded, but I think it should be a good unit. And where we’re lacking, Schwartz seems to be fine with it — IE Gerry, Maddox and Mills. That’s part of the equation as well.

Well it's not like he has pushed Roseman to go after a high end LB instead of DT.

The way you talk about Jim Schwartz you would think he’s Billy Davis.

No, he's not that bad. I just think we can do better, and similarly as it was then, it's passed time to start looking at our options.

The last 2 games make Billy Davis look like Bud Carson in comparison.

Criticism is fine and fair game. People act like he’s the dumbest DC in the league.

He doesn't have to be the dumbest DC to be ready to move on from him.

Or his apparent opinion that Mills would be able to fill in for Jenkins.

I never liked Jim and never will. He is too predicable and that puts the DBs and LBs in a lose situation. His scheme is all about Dline pressure which we have had none lately. If they dont get pressure, the DBs are set to get eaten up. Im the type of D guy that wants the QB to be confused. He has to beat us with his adaptability. With Jim that is not needed. I want creativity just as much on defense then offense. Ive been calling for him to be gone for 2 years now. I will finally get my wish at the end of this season when his contract is done. If you look at his stats hes a 15-18 rank DC on avg in his career of 18 years. Only top 10 is if the Offense is top 3. Yes we could get worse at DC but we could do a lot better as well. Im not into just being avg.

Nah. The O hung the defense out to dry in Week 1.

Yesterday... yeah, that was bad.

Not to me; I liked kicking the FG there to get within 5 points -- but the strategy supposes your defense isn't going to watch the opponents offense run a track meet the rest of the game.

I can see the thought process behind it, and i'm guessing the analytics would show its probably close whatever you choose. It just seemed so out of character for Doug.

I really want to see Carson succeed and I'm still very hopeful that he can/will.  But this is still uncharted territory.  I was a major Mcnabb critic around here once I realized he just wasn't good enough.  I picked apart everything he did.

I'd say I realized in 2005-2006 that he wasn't going to be a truly great passer or clutch performer.  That was about 6 years in.  Wentz hasn't been nearly as good or accomplished through 4.125 years as Mcnabb was at this point, but I'm still not there yet on him.  With that said, Mcnabb never had a 2 game stretch to start the year where you could truly say he was playing at the level of one of the 2 worst starting QB's in the NFL.  Mcnabb never sank to this depth.

Again, I'm not there yet on Wentz.  It took me 6 years for Mcnabb.  And that's about exactly how long I will give Wentz.  This year and next.  At that point, the final product will or will not be good enough.

Donovan McNabb PHI 19 36 148 0 1 3 24 15 51.6 5 55 0 16 0 0 0 0

Donovan McNabb PHI 18 46 186 0 2 8 43 24 33.4 5 54 0 15 0 0 0 0

The first 2 games of the 2003 season McNabb wasn't good at all.  I mean back to back games of INTs.  His completion percentage was bad in each game.  It was pretty similar.

They did not look good in red zone defense.  Sure they held Washington in check but Haskins also couldn't complete a pass for anything. Haskins' poor performance made them look better than they were.

He’s gotten a pass for to long. He has a say in personal as well and player development on the Defensive side is nonexistent.

Or to push Chris Long out the door when they could have used his help at DE in 2019.

I know, Schwartz doesn’t get credit for anything. But the RZ defense, but Haskins missed passes, but the Super Bowl.

Cthulhu had 34 - 20

Yep. A laundry list of blind spots and mistakes.

And he has no DE's to effectively run his version of the Wide-9

That’s of course comparing 2003 passing game stats to 2020.

There was a never-ending discussion last season lamenting how the Eagles didn't have any playmakers on offense.  I tried to make the point a few times -- the Eagles don't have any playmakers on defense, either.  That was the main reason I jumped aboard the 'trade for Ramsey' train last season, and why I was in agreement with the suggestion I heard from both Daniel Jeremiah and Pat Kirwan that the Eagles should draft Kenneth Murray at #21 in April.  (For the record, I'm perfectly fine with Reagor; I think he'll be a good player)

Who are we expecting to make big plays for this defense?  McLeod?  He never really has.  Mills?  Not a chance.  None of our LB are playmakers.  Maddox?  Dropped a sure INT vs WASH.  Cox and Graham aren't what they were in 2017.  We don't have an edge rusher who will get strip-sacks (at least Sweat got one vs WASH, but was invisible vs the Rams)

There needs to be an overhaul, both in personnel and strategy.  It's tough in the current NFL for defenses to attack offenses, but the best defenses still do it.

My issue with the coordinators on both sides of the ball is the lack of innovation/adaptation. Play one scheme for this long and the league adapts. I don’t see either side of the ball innovating to adapt themselves.

Did Pederson seriously reply with "Good question" when he was asked by the media why Wentz is regressing?  That is awful; way to erode a relationship with your QB.

I thought Solak made a great point about Wentz. He’ll never be the most accurate quarterback, but that isn’t an issue when we’re connecting on some chunk plays. Days like yesterday, his inaccuracy can really stymie an offense when the defense is forcing him to be accurate on the short to intermediate stuff. His misses become magnified.

Mosher brought up a good point in the day after pod. Eagles already have Doug and Press, they brought in Scangarello, Mornhinweg and Andrew Breiner who are all ex QB coaches. That's 5 coaches who at some point were a QB coach, so is this too many cooks in the kitchen who all want something different from Wentz? Not that it excuses his slump, but this collaborative effort might just be blowing up in their face.

Two games in and we’re probably looking at a blown season.

I like Schwartz and think he’s been more good than bad since 2016 but he relies on the D line and whatever’s being done there looks combat ineffective, ageing players on vast stacks of cash offering little impact. Even when the back end collapses, the run defense has been consistently excellent and even that has now deteriorated.

The linebackers are worse than 2012 where Casey Matthews got ripped to shreds by tight ends much like Gerry yesterday. Slay is what we paid for, but when your defensive front is lacking juice, the linebackers sub-standard and leadership completely absent with Jenkins (and to be honest, Bradham) gone, he’s lost like tears in rain.

The real enigma here, though, is Carson. Man, has the carriage turned into a pumpkin over summer. He hasn’t been the same since Reich and Flip left, but down the stretch last year, without them, he was exemplary.

Yes, his mechanics have been awful. Is he being coddled? Maybe. Being coached by a good friend is not the same as being pushed by a taskmaster. Is he being asked to do too much with poor talent around him? To an extent, yes, but he’s made it work before.

Are Doug and the weird assembly of offensive coaches coaching to his strength? Is there a consistent approach? Not really. Whatever they’re doing, he’s not comfortable. It blows my mind to think that the Head Coach and play caller who got Foles a ring by playing to his strengths is struggling to get the same out of Wentz.

I don’t think he is what he’s been the last two weeks; maybe he’s more Philip Rivers than Aaron Rodgers at this point, but that is still a better situation than most teams have.

The Bengals game is massive. If they manage to get the defensive front sorted and someone stages an intervention with Wentz and gameplans some confidence back into him, then maybe the ship gets righted, you build around Hargrave/Barnett/Cox and Wentz/Sanders/Reagor/Goedert with a Stoutland-coached line and you have something to work with. You won't make the playoffs but it won't mean a couple of years in the wilderness, a good offseason and you're 10-6 or better again. Whether you trust the incumbents to do that is another matter.

The same again,  0-3 then PIT, BAL, SF and you have to think about essentially a complete rebuild, trading some of the older guys, an early draft pick and playing your 2020 draft class just to see where they’re at for 2021, and at worst, visions of Wentz going to the Super Bowl with the Frank Reich coached Colts after we’ve cut him loose being fulfilled.

When was the last time the Eagles drafted a LB in the early rounds? (1st 3)
