I don't think it's a crutch at all.  Remember this quote by DP?  What's stopping them from rolling Carson out on 1st down?  They already suck at 1st and 2nd down so why not put your QB in a better position on those downs?

"You know, I’d love to be able to sit down and maybe show you guys game film and study the tape and talk about scheme and stuff like that. There are opportunities. Carson’s a great outside-of-the-pocket thrower, and we understand that. But when we have 13 snaps that are second down and seven-plus – we didn’t do a good job on first down, whether running or passing the football. Utilizing an out of the pocket throw, a movement type throw when it’s 2nd and 13… I don’t know, maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t. But I think you have to push the ball differently down the field. Drop back, play-action, whatever it might be. Screen. But everything we do it obviously starts with first down, and if you’re not positive on first down, it now affects what you do on 2nd down, then 3rd down and 4th down. I would love to have Carson out of the pocket more. He is dynamic outside the pocket, great vision and all of that. But we have to better on first down in order for a lot of those plays to take place.”

I thought Dougnis supposed to be the innovative, outside the box offensive savant.  This sounds like locked in a box thinking.

Rollouts = (# of passing plays) +1 -1 X 1 / (100%)

The math checks out

Doug: If we don't get positive yards on first down we should punt on second down.

It would be really nice if DeSean, Lane, and McLeod can go.

TJ Watt missed practice with a knee injury today.

How many rollouts does Doug need to call a game?

Eleventy-twelve.

Desean will last a quarter and limp off to miss another 2 games.

He's turned into Sam Bradford in his old age.

Collecting money for doing nothing is a great gig!

Yeah, he is what he is at this point for sure. It would just be nice to have some kind of receiving option on the outside.

But he had a TD on a straight drop back? I kind of wonder if they planned more deeper drops for him like they do with Mahomes if that would help.

Yes, in seriousness I actually wish the Eagles would call up the deep ball more often; it’s a misconception that you need Desean or Reagor to be running those routes.  Fulgham helped win the game for the Eagles, and I can remember even in Matthews’ second tour him catching a couple of long TD passes.

The Eagles should be throwing 3-4 bombs per game, and often they just don’t

Would like to see him on the PS.

Saying we can't get Carson outside the pocket because we didn't do well on 1st down is moronic, there is no rule that says one can't get Carson out out of the pocket on 1st down no? I mean if o e can pass 60 times on first down on a play action pass then why not a roll out?

I wouldn't trade a 1st for Julio

Not at this stage of his career. Love julio. When healthy still a beast. But he always has a nagging injury and is older now. In his prime depending on where my team was I’d consider it. his touchdowns i feel is more on teams just loaded up on stopping him since i don’t think atlanta had great weapons inside the red zone besides him. They ha since weapons but I’m making someone else besides julio beat mean. If sanu beats me or freeman. I’ll live with that.

This was pretty good

Sheil on Mailata...

I was fully prepared to throw cold water on the hype, but I have to say, I was really impressed. I am not an offensive line aficionado by any means. But by my count, Mailata did not give up a sack or a hit on 34 pass plays. There were a couple of stunts that gave the Eagles issues, but those seemed to be more on Nate Herbig than Mailata.

The Eagles had an OL-friendly game plan. They moved Carson Wentz out of the pocket, used run-pass options (RPOs) and incorporated a quick passing game. But there were also a bunch of plays where Mailata had to block a defensive end one-on-one on dropback passes, and he got the job done. Mailata’s strength really stood out. There were a number of bull rushes where it looked like the defensive end basically ran into a brick wall. There were instances where San Francisco blitzed a linebacker off the edge, and Mailata knew exactly what to do.

I don’t know if you listened to the podcast from yesterday he also killed pryor. Says his lack of athleticism is showing and they need to get him out cause it’s eventually going to hurt them more. Also thought herbig had a drop off since moving to the LG spot from how he looked at right guard. Thinks maybe move herbig back to RG and push Driscoll to LG

He mentioned that in his article as well. I didn’t want to post the whole thing.

I wonder if it’s simply more film on Herbig or if it’s just switching sides.

I dunno, maybe look up the stats and try it a couple times.

Stats from last year for Carson out of the pocket: 70% completion rate. You'd think if it 2nd and long you want to call plays where 70% of the time your QB throws a complete pass.

I think he was 1 for 1 on Sunday but it did seem like they called other deep shots that just weren't open.  Wentz has been overthrowing the ball but I wonder if making take a deeper drop would help.  His arm strength wouldn't be an issue.

I’m not so sure I agree with Solak, but the all-22 does make the throw look a little better for Wentz, that’s for sure. More toward the sideline though and people are talking about a great play design and call by Doug.

I know in the podcast he alluded more to the fact he thinks it’s playing the left side. I think it might also be the fact playing in between lane and kelce helps. He played LG his freshman year for 6 games. Then moved him to basically RG the rest of his college career outside of a game or two.  so it is probably more of a comfort thing.

They also talked when peters comes back moving him back to RG if mailata holds up the next two weeks. I belief was these are likely the two toughest matchups he’s going to see for a while so it’s a nice test to see just how far he’s at.

That's a good idea.  I think roll outs and read options get him relaxed and in a groove, then call deeper drops and go deep.  I hate the 5 yard shotgun calls.

I think Wentz has to make a tighter turn there so he can set his feet and the free defender isn't an issue.  Good play call he just has to be more urgent in his turn
