This isn't pre-season and Carson's not wearing red.

And this is all preseason for 2021 to me.

It isn't to me.

Not to make excuses but I've wondered if it is cap related. I believe they are already $70mm over the cap for next year, and with the uncertainty of the cap next year wonder if they are just pinching every penny right now and not filling roster spots.

I think its certainly why they aren't bringing in any name free agents like Freeman. I've been pounding the table for Amukamara who looks to be headed to Arizona. COVID also comes into play which limits how much bottom of the roster you can churn. Just weird always having open spots on the roster and even on the PS. They bring in just one guy (Olsen) and sign him to the PS when we have two open spots. Why not just bring in someone else, even if you just cut him next week?

If you want to keep both eyes on a 6-9-1 division title, as a fan, that's fine.  And if I want to keep one eye on 2021 in a lost season, as a fan, it's not changing anything.

But we are all entertained differently.

The season's not lost yet. At least wait until we're not even in first place before you start giving up all hope.

Start out empty, motion Ward behind Wentz and run this bad boy on third and inches.

Whoa. So at least we're not the only team, I guess.

Well yes Mike that's what the surgery is for. To correct the injury.

😉

Haha, I've played on that field.

Howie wouldn't recognize value in round 1 if it were surgically attached to his eyelids.  They wanted a tackle.  The Eagles draft for need in the early rounds, unless it's Jalen Hurts.

You would think if they were planning to pick a tackle in the first round they would have invited Dillard for a visit.  I think they were targeting DT in that draft and when Wilkins was drafted shifted to other positions. I believe at first people thought they might be trading up for Jacobs instead they took Dillard.  I was hoping they would have taken Montez Sweat.

They didn't bring him in because they didn't believe he'd be there. Much like other players who were graded to go before our pick. If you truly think they'll be gone then you don't use a valuable visit on them.

We’ve brought in QBs knowing we had no shot at them. Banner said sometimes you bring in potential high picks just to get a feel for them in case they hit the trade market or FA.

Apologies to all. This week has been so crazy that I never came close to finishing my review of Mailata. Spent the better part of an hour on the first play from scrimmage just sorting out the blocking assignments. Interesting stuff. RG blocks the RDE, LG blocks the RDT. Mailata and Kelce filter through to the second level where Mailata blocks the MLB and then hits a safety. He didn't leave much for Kelce to block. We had two TEs on the right and they blocked the LDT and LDE. So-so blocks but those were bigger guys they were going against. Most notably, Lane blocked absolutely nobody. He blocks either one of two guys and the play goes for five more yards.

What I wanted to do was use Tra's film and screen shots from the all-22 to break down each play but I just didn't have the time. I did make one quick pass with the all-22 and there was a play where Mailata was too upright and ended up on his a$$. That was the only really bad play he had. He got bull-rushed another time and the guy got close because he was too high and the DE got under him. Other than that he physically dominated whoever came at him. I think 94 of the 49ers ended up being afraid of him. A couple of times he just stood up, didn't want any part of him.

Kelce aside, Mailata was our best OL by far in his debut.

I’ve watched this 10 times and I laugh more and more every time.

I think QBs is perhaps a little different. You only get so many visits and I think you have to use them on guys you think will be around your pick. Plus of course not just on first round guys. In fact I think visits are really important for those middle to late round guys.

I agree.

That's my point is that they didn't plan to target an OT in the first round.  If they had, they would have brought him in for a visit.  They had visits with Cody Ford and Tytus Howard.  Howard was a surprise first round pick. They were not planning to take an OT.

Back in the day you could slap the QB across the face a good 5 seconds after the pass.

And wow 72. wtf was that?

I have no issues at all with the Dillard pick.  When the Eagles selected him I went back to his tape and said to myself "I remember liking this guy; didn’t think he’d be available”.  He was very good value and answered a big need — he was BPA at that pick.  Really unfortunate he’s missing this season.

From the comments

The Dillard pick was correct at the time.

We had a big hole at LT and Dillard was a clear-cut BPA. It was an easy decision. Dillard looked fine in the clips we could see in training camp and played "ok" in limited snaps last year at LT.

But if Mailata is better, so be it.

The guy with the camera was wide open😉

Welp. My dream is shattered.
