Dillard didn't have tackle strength last year. I don't see how he would have guard strength all of a sudden.

It’s also about technique and leverage.  See a guy like Evan Mathis.  Plus the guy will be 3 years in next season.  He couldn’t get in the weight room and get stronger?

They’ve pretty much had him at tackle since he was drafted, no? And when he was drafted he was announced as a tackle, too.

When did Dillard get hurt?  Wasn't Prince injured when they brought him in?  Wasn't Lane recovering from surgery?

I think they saw the writing on the wall quickly that OT was a need for this season early.

Here's a question:

Mailata or Fulgham.

Who is the real deal, who is a mirage?

For me, I think Mailata is the one who is starting on this team in 2 years, whereas Fulgham will not be...unless he's just hanging on for lack of an alternative (on second thought, maybe that part is pretty likely).

He's got 10 more games (maybe more) this season to get reps.  He desperately needs reps, which is why him ending up on IR the last two years was so disappointing, because it ends even practice reps.

Yup. And I think that’s why film guys like Solak say Driscoll "looks better”. Probably because they are focusing on technique. And sure, Driscoll SHOULD have better technique at this stage. Mailata probably gets knocked because his technique isn’t the best but he gets away with it from sheer size and power. At the end of the day, like QB mechanics, I don’t care who looks better. It’s whose game overall is better.

They both will. They won't cost much money. These are the kind of players the Eagles will want to keep going forward.

He was announced as a tackle when he was drafted. I’m 99 percent sure they comped him to Big B as a backup swing tackle following the draft. Then he took maybe all of his snaps at tackle in camp.

Maybe he ends up inside, but there’s nothing to suggest they planned for him to be a guard/center this year other than predraft write-ups.

Driscoll is a future LG or C, his arms are too short for OT.

Dillard might be able to move to LG, Mathis had a pretty good career there and he wasn't huge, it's different leverage in a phone booth than out in space.

Fulgham is for real, hand catching, high pointing balls, there are 10 year vets who don't do that as well.

I’d have to say Mailata is most likely the real deal based off measurables/athleticism. Fulgham has gotten lucky on some of these plays, in particular the TD against San Fran and the TD against Baltimore. A small bounce in a different direction on either we are probably writing him off the roster.

Agreed.

Man... that Fulgham TD in the Ravens game hit him in the chest. Went right through his hands and hit his chest before anything else. Hes been good, but also been lucky. Im afraid its all gonna come crashing down at some point.

As did the catch against the 49ers.  He's shown great hands and the ability to attack the ball but he also has let a get get in to his body.  He has potential but he needs to continue to improve much like Mailata.

If we find Fulgham and Mailata in this crap season that's a huge win.

Said that a day or two ago about TD. He s been really good for 3 games but the San Fran and Baltimore TD’s have a bit of luck involved.

I don't care what he was announced as at the draft.  As for the rest... yes, he took maybe all the snaps at OT in training camp (there weren't OTAs or other offseason workouts, so TC was all there was to go by).  And correct me if I'm wrong, but Dillard got hurt in the first practice, or maybe the second.  Lane wasn't practicing due to the ankle surgery.  So, who was left at OT?  Mailata and ???   They even worked Pryor out at OT this offseason, that's how desperate they were for OTs, and even brought in Peters to be RG, then moved him to OT because the OT picture was so bleak.  So, I'm not sure that the original plan was really OT, especially after they also were able to bring in Prince, who I think projects better to OT in the NFL.  But, again, Prince was dealing with an old injury, and wasn't able to be counted on this year.  (I do look forward to seeing him next year though.)  But, they saw a need at OT quickly and knew he played there in college, so they did what they had to do for now... and he showed well enough there to keep him at OT and put Pryor back at OG.   And, with a young player like that, I think its better to limit the positional versatility, especially with such an abbreviated offseason.

We are unlikely to agree on this, but I see the timeline of injuries at the OT position as forcing their hand immediately.  No Dillard, no Lane.  Left a pretty bleak outlook at OT to start the year.  I think they wanted their top 3 to be Dillard, Lane, and Mailata... then when they brought in Peters, he could be a 4th, if needed - they might not have counted on his extortion.  But, when options 1 and 2 weren't available immediately, the plan had to change.  And they might have thought about him at OT for this year, knowing the Prince wasn't a viable option, but I don't see them thinking his long term future was really going to be at OT.  Stoutland is too smart for that.

No question it's Mailata.  He has elite size, strength and athleticism.  I don't think any other LT in the game can match him as an athlete.  For him it's all about reps, getting smarter, learning leverage and all of the ins and outs of playing LT in the NFL.

Fulgham is what 6-2, 215, 220 with average speed.  He looks nice now because the Eagles are trotting out trash at WR.  The chances they find a top LT in round 3 or 4 are much lower than finding a #2 WR.

Mailata has a chance to lock down LT for the next decade.

Not sure what Solak is watching, Mailata looks like starter to me

If dillard was slated to be a starter this year then Mailata looks like one as well. Mailata has already shown in 3 games more than dillard did last year.

Dismissing Mailata as just getting a way with things because of his size is negligent. His size is an asset why not take advantage of it?

Pretty sure he has said he should be cut in some of the podcasts. He always does this.

I'm in the minority, but I have more faith in Fulgham than I do Mailata.

Solak used to tweet about who had the best hair.  While he's grown up a bit it's still hard for me to take any of his commentary serious.

They started walk-throughs on Aug. 3. Dillard was injured Aug. 27, so Driscoll, who the team compared to Big V as a swing tackle after the draft, had three-plus weeks at the position.

I think you’re seeing what you want to see here. He might project long term to guard/center, but it’s clear they’re going to let him fail at tackle first.

Dillard isn’t strong enough or physical enough to handle DTs.

Care to elaborate?

Another thing to take in to account with Mailata is he is playing with 3 other backup lineman along with Kelce.  He doesn't even have the luxury of having Seumalo next to him.  I would imagine having an established veteran next to him and a solid right side of the line will definitely help him out too.  This line is in shambles.  We are looking at potential starters on the line but right now Herbig is still a work in progress.  Driscoll is too light for RT.  Jamon Brown's jock still hasn't been found by the ground crew and you have Kelce in the middle trying to keep everyone together.  The o-line is a unit and when they are playing together it can be a beautiful thing.  Right now it's 5 guys fending for themselves.  Not an ideal situation for a guy playing his first football games ever.

We need to keep repeating this.  Tomorrow night is Mailata's 4th football game ever...

I quit listening. Didn't he challenge that ESPN guy that supports Wentz? Pretty sure they got into it about his touchdown throw in last years giants game.

Considering how much room for growth Mailata has, that’s surprising. He’s only going to get better.

I like what I see quite a bit from Fulgham. I think he’s a legit contributor with the chance to be even more. He’s what people want Greg Ward to be.

He thought Orlovsky was overrating his TD pass to Perkins. If I remember correctly, Orlovsky said something to the effect that only a few QBs could make that throw.

Orlovsky said it was an elite throw. Solak said it was impressive but it was wide open and there’s like 4 QB’s currently playing with enough arm strength to make the same throw across their body into a huge window so it wasn’t elite.

The question is...faith for what?

Faith to help the offense scratch and claw this year as the best we have?  Faith that he can be a #2, #3...#1?  Faith that he can be our starting X WR of the future?
