Eagles 2nd Round Pick - ELI STOWERS, TE, Vanderbilt

What was the thinking behind this pick then? Seemed like a particularly weak TE draft class behind sadiq and to take stowers in the second round looks like a real reach.

Weak WR class. Weak TE class. First 2 picks were WR/TE.

I never liked workout warriors. They almost always deceive you. Especially how well coached they are ahead of combine. Show me the tape. I trust the tape a lot more.

That mentality also produced us more busts at WR for us than can be counted. The WR draft picks could use an infusion of testable explosiveness.

They weren't happy with the TE depth last year. They needed better blocking from the TE so they signed Mundt. They also likely wanted to add multiple new receiving options. Stowers could have little pressure working behind Goedert, while Lemon and the other WRs brought in would compete for targets and see how the new Mannion offense utilizes them.

In the last 20 years there were 3 misses, Agholor 2015, Arcega Whiteside 2019, and Reagor 2020.

There were 5 successes. Devonte Smith in 2021, DeSean Jackson in 2008, Maclin 2009, Avant 2006, Jordan Mathews in 2014.

So I would say more success than misses. And they found Jason Avant in the 4th.

Avant was a completely forgettable WR who was drafted right in front of Marques Colston. Calling Jordan Matthews a success is a huge stretch. He was an over used product of a well designed offense who actually sucked. Agholor was better.

We are letting Josh Huff off the hook?

You've moved the goal posts though. You said busts. He provided names of WRs the Eagles drafted that were solid and produced. Now you're changing the argument to product of the system, hindsight of who was drafted after them that was better and this kind of deflection.

Matthews as a rookie had 8 TDs and 872 yards. 2nd year he had 8 TDs and 997 yards, 3rd year 3 TDs and 804 yards. That's not a bust. Avant was the 3rd WR in the slot and had great hands, he wasn't a bust. Agholor in the SB year had solid #2 numbers next to Alshon with 8 TDs and 768 yards.

We may want more from the WRs, but calling them busts is ridiculous.

Yup, makes the most sense. Also allows Stowers to learn and hopefully get going later in the season. They did need a returner so they could just keep Covey as the elevated player

I’ll give it time but this has the makings of a reached bust draft pick.

Here comes the revisionist history that Eagles fans are so good at. Bust....MAYBE. Reach, nope not even a little bit. He was most people's 2nd ranked TE in the draft and was supposed to go mid to late 2nd round.

I think that ranking depends on which ranking service was doing it...personally I didn't want him or Lemon but I hope I'm proven wrong.

Stowers to me with his size seemed like a gloried media driven Granson... not revisionist history here, I put this in the I want the Eagles to Get section.

He was never a TE in college. He was taken off the field on running downs as he had no ability or interest in blocking. They got him out in space as a WR HBack slot/gadget guy to get him the ball out in space where he could use his athletic RAC ability. He was listed as a TE on the program but never played the position. In the NFL he's a slow outside WR or slot WR and will have to learn how to get off the line and separate vs the CBs that will cover him. It will be harder for him to get open as he can't block and will have the 3rd or 4th CB mirroring him all over the field. He won't have the luxury of gaps in a zone defense, at least as long as we face a competent DC, as a DB will be on him and won't have to release him in a zone as most LBs would have to, if he could block.

Jalyx Hunt was also a day 2 pick that began the season inactive and really only saw ST snaps and a few garbage time snaps the 1st half of his rookie season. He was a raw talent that needed time. He did have a pretty good role in the 2nd half of his rookie season and played well in the postseason. Things really started to click in the 2nd half of his second season.

As raw as Hunt was, that was a pretty fast ascension. As lost as Stowers looked, we may have to wait longer. Hopefully he gets involved by the end of the season. I doubt many expect it at this point.

Apparently you don't understand the difference between a Y and F tight end. He was an F tight end in college which is how a guy like Isaiah Likely or Mike Gesicki for example is used in the NFL. Brock Bowers is consider by many to be one of if not the best tight ends in the NFL and he is pretty much an F TE as well as he rarely plays in line and blocks.

If you have zero blocking ability you can't be a TE in the NFL unless you have great speed and can get off the line and separate. He has none of these attributes

Stowers actually has great speed for a TE. As a rookie, he's having to adjust to the speed of the NFL and he looked lost. It's disappointing, but not unusual. He has a lot to learn at this level, but just because he isn't there on day 1, does not mean he won't get there. He may even learn to block at some point.

I share the disappointment that he isn't ready to help yet. I just don't see why we all have to kick him while he's down. Hopefully, he'll get off IR, practice with the team and find a role where he can focus on some of his game instead of all the things he needs to learn at once. Sometimes a little success creates a lot of confidence in a young player.

WRONG

He ran a 4.51 at the combine and his RAS score was better than 94% of TE's over the last 40 years. He can't block right now and he is a project who is still pretty new to the position but speed and athletic ability is not even close to the issue. This a guy who was a QB up until he became a full time TE at Vanderbilt in 2024. It's also funny how you just glossed over my comments about an F tight end versus a Y tight end.

"Eli Stowers posted an elite Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.42 out of 10.00 (with initial projections/tests coming in around 9.46), ranking 86th out of 1,471 tight ends from 1987 through 2026."

He was drafted where he was projected to be drafted. That doesn’t constitute a reach.

We will just to agree to disagree. He is not a TE. He is a slot WR in the NFL. Can't block to play TE. Doesn't have the speed to play outside. Not that he ca't be productive in the slot and the red zone. Since he can't block he should have a DB covering him which will make it more difficult to get open vs a TE who can block. If we can scheme him into open space he has great rac ability. That is the challenge. If he commits to learning how to block and lives in the weight room maybe he could become a TE or at least a productive slot. But a TE he never was. That's all i have to say

Just a horrible, brutally, bad pick by Howie. HUGE reach.

Kid can’t play at this level. JJAW part 2.

Can he get, for the Offense, hmmmmm, 30 catches? 345 yards? 3 TDs??

Reminds me of this lmao

I think is painfully obvious that this kid won’t contribute this season. One has to hope he can turn it around next season. I think we might want to extend Goedert again to make sure this kid will be ready to eventually take over.

If we extend Goedert AGAIN, so he can get hurt AGAIN, then we might as well extend me as "the best EMB poster ever”. 🦮🏄

I hope the Stowers pick works out. Seriously.
