Thought this is worthy of its own topic and a pretty big step. They will use the taxes generated from the sale of weed to help pay for treatment.

In what would be a first in the U.S., possession of small amounts of heroin, cocaine, LSD and other hard drugs could be decriminalized in Oregon under a ballot measure that voters are deciding on in Tuesday’s election.

Measure 110 is one of the most watched initiatives in Oregon because it would drastically change how the state’s justice system treats people caught with amounts for their personal use.

Instead of being arrested, going to trial and facing possible jail time, the users would have the option of paying $100 fines or attending new, free addiction recovery cent ers.

I have always failed to see why it matters if somebody is;

angry, drunk, stoned, hateful, insane, stupid or any other condition,

when they commit a crime. X crime = Y punishment. Can there be mitigating circumstance? Of course, but the fact that you CHOSE to get HIGH before 'not meaning to kill that person' doesn't matter IMHO. You killed them. You pay the price.

It should not be illegal to be high, or drunk, or a member of the KKK. There are crimes, there are laws - enforce them when the person commits a crime.

Didn't they legalize mushrooms too? Or did I hallucinate that in the fog of last?

You didn't

But the law won’t mean that "magic” mushrooms have the same legal status as cannabis. Instead, it will allow psilocybin to be stored and administered at licensed facilities.

Just what Oregon needs - MOAR DRUGS

It's about propensity to commit crime under the influence. Somewhat similar to punishing drunk driving even if the driver is just over the legal limit and driving perfectly fine.

Now if someone wants to trip balls in the confines of their own home, they should be able to do that. Out in public though? I think it depends on the type of drug and the effects it typically induces in people. Overall, this is a great first step, and I'm glad to see it.

It's a step. Really interesting to see how all this plays out. I'm optimistic.

I was just starting to get a good buzz on and wanted to stay up and enjoy the misery for a few more hours but decided it was best to get to bed.  Then my stupid brain woke me up at 5:30 anyway so I was on my phone checking the updates

@Ialone is @probably moving to Oregon now.

If it is already ruining lives why not try to make a change and be proactive. Actually help those individuals instead of throwing them in jail, getting it on their record and ruining their chance at future success once they get clean.

It also ruins not just the user. Ever watch the show Intervention? Not all of them care they are hurting people. They just want the high

So the solution is to lock them up and magically think they will get better with a criminal record or let them be homeless and do drugs? Have you seen LA lately, city is turning into a crap hole that is absolutely overrun with homelessness.

The answer isn't do nothing and the current solution is failing.

Welcome to Portland...your final destination.

That State is gonna need a lot more graveyards.

Drug laws do not stop people from destroying their lives with drugs. Just a new avenue of destruction.

That's kinda the whole point. To provide more funding for intervention programs to help address the problem.

I think @mr_hunt  is in contact with him off the boards.

And for the people that can't pay the fine and don't want to go into recovery?

It's not going to be 100% successful, but it doesn't need to be. It only needs to be more successful than mass incarceration of non-violent drug offenders.
