Mike, honest question I've never known the answer to -- why is there that little sliver of WV that shoots north into PA? I have driven through it on the PA turnpike a few times. I've never understood how that happened.

The whole state is the result of individual counties that remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War, so that probably has something to do with it.

Its from the original state of Virginia.  If you look at an old map, that was part of Virginia pre-Civil War. 

I often say that WV is the most western Eastern state, the most southern North state, the most eastern Midwestern state, and the most orthern Southern state

Each corner of the state is completely different

it’s the Ohio River that created that weird boundary.  When the NW Territory was established in 1787 its southern boundary was the Ohio River.

 

 

and because Congress outlawed slavery in the NW Territory when they created it, the Ohio River became a border between slave states and free ones
