So far, that has led to less virulent but more transmissible variants -- basically, as people got vaccinated and/or immunity from having been sick, the disease had to adapt and become more transmissible and less severe to survive. But now with a fresh batch of hosts who have no protection...who knows what it does. The risk is some new, more virulent variant developing and being brought over.
