Went through a line to grab beers - one of those where you pull it out of the cooler yourself and then pay at the end on a self-checkout tablet. There was a woman sitting there just to make sure there were no issues, but she literally did nothing except say thank you. When I hit no tip I got quite the glare

If people are willing to tip on the regular in places that previously they weren't even asked to, it signals that there's tolerance for higher prices. It's one of the reasons I try to tip in cash wherever it's appropriate to tip. Franchise restaurants surely look at the tipping percentages to determine price ceilings.

It's one of my go-to moves as a dad when I want a timeout - I go pick up takeout from one of the local pubs and get a couple beers while I wait.

Side note: We all just got back from Holden Beach with my mom and my aunt, and they had Sunset Italian Ice vendors going up and down the beach, but they only accepted cash. My wife said, "Who the F would bring cash to the beach?" I immediately responded that there's no chance my mom knows how to use a debit or credit card, and I guarantee she has cash in her fanny pack. Boom - she did, and we had 2 delicious Italian ices.
