Its an old school thing before energy efficient bulbs were a thing. Still funny to anyone over 40 though, I would think. I used to hear it when I was a kid, but then again we were very very poor lol.

My dad was the same way, and I'm not too far behind him. I don't obsess over it, but I try to not leave lights on when I leave a room. If anything, conserving energy is good regardless of the financial impact.
March 24, 20224 yr Kids are masters at leaving every single light on in every single room of the house. LED bulbs and dimming smart switches ftw. I even did the math on installing motion detectors for the second floor, and it's actually cheaper just to turn all the bedroom lights on at sunset at a dim setting and then ramp up from there than it is to buy motion detectors.

Also, about half the lights in my house are automated, I can turn them off from Alexa or my phone.
