May 17, 20224 yr Why do we feel the need to make Robots that mimic Humans? Just a guess- to make them feel less threatening? Which is scary in itself.

The real answer is much more mundane... We, as humans, have built a world that only we can uniquely interact with and navigate. The real reason why some robots don't have tank treads or wheels or something else that you would assume would be more fitting for a robot to have is pretty simple: You need legs to traverse a staircase. You typically need arms with a hand to turn a handle and push open a door. You need digits on that hand to push buttons on an elevator. etc. Has nothing to do with "feeling less threatening". If anything, the uncanny valley concept would imply the opposite. The more humanoid you make them appear, the more uncomfortable people typically feel when they see them. If you walked out your door tomorrow and saw something that looks like an old-school robot fresh outta rocky 4 rolling down your sidewalk, you're far more likely to giggle than to feel threatened. But in that same scenario, if you see Atlas jogging instead of that rocky 4 robot? Yeah, I'll bet money you're gonna feel way more uneasy with the sight of something like that.

You do know there is no way he understands this, right?
