I'd argue that on average kids today are smarter than past generations, but those of us intelligent enough to survive and thrive spending their workdays discussing politics on a professional football team's unofficial message board overestimate the average intelligence of their own generation. There are some studies on this. The Flynn Effect was the phenomenon of rising IQ scores over time, but recently these have reversed and gone downhill. Most studies put the peak in the 1980’s or 1990’s by this metric. So, kids might actually be getting dumber over time. There are other studies that go further back using writing samples, but obviously these are far less standardized and biased towards those who were actually literate. They suggest IQ peaked a few hundred years ago.
November 30, 20222 yr The difference is that in past generations, the dumb asses didn't have a way to voice their nonsensical ramblings aside from their nightly booze induced rants at 1am. And even then, those were tempered once everyone at the bar quickly figured out that this person was in fact a gigantic moron and began to ignore him rather than encourage him. But thanks to the internet, that virtual bar is now open 24/7 and is infinitely larger, meaning said dumb ass can seek out and congregate with other similarly feeble minded idiots, and now they can encourage each other's idiocy, pretend they're not dumb, and suddenly their collective voices become loud enough to annoy everyone else.

People who would have their writings from a couple hundred years ago survive would almost certainly be of the more inquisitive and curious types.
