Time to put Howie back in the basement? - Discuss Howie Roseman here

Featured Replies

If we are being honest Howie has done very little right the last two years. From the drafts to trades to signing guys to long- term contracts to roster construction to ignoring safety and TE to bad FA signings, he has to share a lot of the blame.

Howie deserves some criticism for what’s happened to this team. There were some key positions he chose to let go and bet on the come. There are some guys he let walk for comp picks and brought in guys who didn’t get it done. I’m not saying Howie needs to be out in tHE Basement, but I do think they need to take a good look at their medical, scouting department, and coaching staff. Howie needs someone that isn’t going to be a rollover head coach. Someone he can work with and not just some yes man. I’m not saying they bring in some egotistical idiot like Chip Kelly again, but everyone needs some checks and balances. Howie could use a legit HC that he respects enough to listen to their needs.

Hard to imagine how Howie could have done a worse job with the draft and his contract extensions.

Jeff and Julian Lurie are running everything through the cover of the analytics dept. They dictate to yes man Nick and he passes the game plans on to the OC

It's why no one wanted the job last off season and why no one will again this offseason

I agree that they run this thing too much on the idea that the coach needs to be a yes man in order to succeed. Time they get with the times and make changes. Howie was the number one guy on the Chip train so I get why he’s hesitant, but everyone needs checks and balances. That includes the GM and owner too.

Howie was on a great run from 2021 to 2024 drafts.

The 2025 draft

Coming off a SB win and they drafted a LB in the 1st round for the first time in like 50 years or however many. At the time, people liked the pick. Picks don't always work out, but it wasn't a bad pick at the time. They had a need a safety and maybe reached for Mukuba. Fangio obviously had influence on the draft in some way because Howie finally has drafted LBs, the year before getting Trotter in the 5th (granted, being Trotter's son with organization ties helped). People liked the Ty Robinson pick thinking he'd be another rotational DT that would increase snaps over time. The rest when you're looking at 5th-7th round it's even less of a hit rate. Taking O linemen for depth and seeing who works out is fine with me. They drafted 3 O linemen in preparation to have depth and Kendall is the one that worked out so far. He could be our new starting Center, or at least be a very viable backup and provide really solid depth if they get a new starter.

I don't mind this draft because they had the SB winning position and had a solid roster from prior years of great drafting. I think Mukuba is a JAG who is decent but needs a stronger player next to him, he can't be relied on as our best safety. But they also have good corners to make up for it.

The 2026 draft

I did not like bringing back Joe Douglas, I hated the drafts when he was here the first time. So I wonder how much of his influence was on this draft. Heading into the draft the consensus was we needed O line, TE (who can block as well) and Edge. They took a slot WR, a TE who can't block (not even playing), and an OT who is filling in ok for Lane and with development could be a starter next year or could be a very solid backup to a new starter. Micah Morris as a 6th round OG could be one of those guys who develops into a decent backup as well, getting OL depth in the 6th is good. Taking a chance on a QB in round 5 is fine, if they like something they see in him. Uar Bernard was an exciting pick for the possibility, which may not payoff for 3 years like Mailata. KJN in the 7th is just low expectations, yet he was out there yesterday because of injury. They really need a top Edge prospect to start opposite Hunt (and Greenard is a "bust" as far as injury and not being available).

The big issue with this draft was in the first 4 rounds (they didn't have a 4th rounder). They traded up for Lemon and gave up two 4th round picks to move 3 spots in that draft. Those picks could have been used to get more talent. Stowers wasn't a popular pick, but it was rationalized as he is like an Ertz type who is a pass catcher who will complement Goedert. But there were other guys most fans wanted and this will continue to be looked at as a failure. It was reported they tried to trade up for an OT but couldn't. It's like Howie wanted to make a move sometimes he can't stop himself. Some players that fans wanted were there at 23 like OT Max Iheanchor, DE Malachi Lawrence, S Dillon Thieneman, OG Keylan Rutledge, OT Caleb Lomu. The big one is taking Stowers instead of S Emmanuel McNiel-Warren.

Imagine if they took an OT and at S EMW. There was also one of my favorite picks in the draft Gennings Dunker. They could have used one of those 4th round picks to trade up in the 3rd to get him. Now imagine this year's O line with a 1st round OT and 3rd round OG filling in, might be a better situation.

The 2027 draft

I think regardless of Hurts situation they were going to take a QB in this draft because they would want a better backup and to see if that guy can become the starter in 2028. He has 2028 draft ammo to use to move up. I could see them using their 1st round pick to take either OT, Edge, maybe S. Then trading back into the 1st to take a QB in the back half of round 1. Unless the guy they want will be available in the 2nd. Same as drafting Hurts when they had Wentz.

Hurts future is uncertain. I could see him being traded and him not wanting to be here anymore as well. If McKee shows enough they could even extend him as the place holder starter and draft a QB this year.

But he's got to get back to the kind of drafting when he rebuilt the defense. O line, Edge, Safety are needs.

Howie also has to stop trading too many picks away. Trading for AJ Brown was great, trading for Greenard wasn't. They used 3 picks to trade up for Jordan Davis and could have just taken Kyle Hamilton a S. Traded two 4th round picks to move up 3 spots for Lemon and could have taken 3 different players instead.

2026 draft they took a short slow short armed small hands slot receiver in the 1st who should, without the speed to play outside, have a 3rd round positional value grade or lower. He could catch 30-40 balls a year for 300-400 yards. The kid can play in the league he just was nowhere near a 1st round value. They took what they thought was a TE in the 2nd who never played TE in college. He was taken off the field on running downs. He was a WR who doesn't have the speed to play outside in the pros, can't block at all so he's not a TE. He's another jump ball slot corner with a 5th round skill set. A boom or bust lottery ticket. The Mackey award voters obviously looked only at his stats, highlight film and promotional pieces put out by the university. They never watched game tape or they would have seen he was a WR not a TE. He was 4th on his college team in receiving yards his senior year. Seems to me to be a Jeff Julian Lurie draft pick just like they took Whiteside. Same MO.

Just my guess, but I thought at the time Howie was just trying to get new offensive weapons for Mannion. He also got Wicks, Hollywood Brown and Moore at WR, and brought in Mundt at TE who was supposedly here to block but he sucks.

He should have just got an OT and safety and we'd be better off.

Yes OL and safety with a blocking TE in the 3rd would have helped alot

It's easy in hindsight to see what was done over the last 18 months that caused the Eagles to decline.

The 2025 draft after winning the Super Bowl were players who weren't expected to contribute right away but drafted to replace players who were expected to be lost the following year and this year.

The 2026 draft was similar..

2025 Jihad Campbell for Nakobe Dean

2025 Andrew Makuba for CJGJ or Blankenship

2025 Ty Robinson for any of DT that needed to be resigned

And the rest of the 2025 class for development

2026 Makai Lemon to add talent to the WR room when the Roseman knew that AJ Brown was on his way out

2026 Stowers to eventually replace Goedart while adding some TE receiving ability in spots

2026 Markel Bell and Micah Morris were to replace Johnson and perhaps Steen.....

The rest of 2026 class was for development.

All of these guys were rated closely to where they were drafted......so I don't think that Howie or the scouting department did a bad job.......but the hardest thing to determine with a prospect is just how much more they can be developed or if they're near their peak.....there is no analytic for that. Campbell, Makuba, Lemon and Stowers have dealt with injuries, missed training camp, preseason games and even regular season games. Plus when they have played, they have struggled at times.....nothing unusual for young players. And the eagles have lost some good positional coaches too which is normal for Super Bowl winning staffs.

So criticize Howie all you want, drafts are not an exact science......these drafts picks made sense at the time, but it may take a bit longer to get some results out of them.....Roseman's record is pretty dam good.....and these 2 drafts may still produce some good results.

Where do you go after being a GM? Wouldnt he be too big for a basement position?

For everything they gave up to bring in Greenard, they should’ve just kept Sweat.

A lot of recent mistakes. A lot.

Howie had a shine. It’s been wearing off the past couple of years. 😬😬

It's just a joke in reference to the time when Chip Kelly was HC and took away a lot of Howie's power, essentially neutering him.

Howie became average. The OC and the offensive line coach should be let go ASAP. There has to be better talent out there. Line coach first.

I do think we need to ask some serious questions of Howie given the roster as is and the decisions he’s made the last couple of years. It’s not to say he has to go… Just to say it’s day to ask some very serious questions and wonder what needs to change.

Howie is on fire!!

Joe Milton

Evan Neal

Brilliant!!

I don’t mind the Milton signing.

And maybe Neal can help out with the running game??

Cross thoughts…..I still wonder why they took away Coach Stout’s "power”. And if Stout was actually fired by Howie. I guess Stout probably said "I’ve had enough”. 🤔🤔

Spent the last few years literally make the wrong choice at every turn. It might be time to go back in the basement.

I have no issue with either signing to be honest. We are decimated with injuries and we have another 11 games to somehow get through. Neal isn’t going to be a good signing but he’s a body. And with Milton I mean there’s athleticism and tools to work with? He probably stinks but there’s some potential and right now this team sucks anyway. McKee isn’t good, Payton is a rookie and probably isn’t good.

I agree with your point, but no one is perfect. His track record gives me faith he can turn things around.

Very interesting the downfall occurred as soon as he stopped prioritizing the trenches. I doubt this will happen again.
