I've learned not to trust anyone on here that talks about the cap :-)

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

I didn’t realize it accelerated in the 1st voidable year.

I’m fine with doing it for the likes of Harris. Whatever. He’s a good player. Wasting future cap space for Flacco? Gross.

In the ground currently:  Arugula, Beets, Carrots, Assorted lettuces, Celery, Radishes, spinach, peas...

Outside in containers, soon to be transplanted to their final location:  leeks, onions (globe and green), cabbage.

Starts currently indoors, but not time to go out just yet: cilantro, rosemary, oregano, basil, assorted flowers for the wife.

Lost my tomato and peppers starts due to negligence.  Left them outside over night on a night that was supposed to stay over 40... but it ended up dropping to 31.  Low tunnel was no protection for that cold on the little ones.   Had I placed the floating row cover over top in addition to the low tunnel, it might have saved them.   So, I will just have to help the local economy in a couple weeks and buy some transplants from a local family run nursery.

Waiting about 4 weeks to start: beans, cucumbers, zucchini and butternut squash.

Fall succession: lettuces, arugula, spinach, rutabagas, carrots, beets, swiss chard, cabbage, green onions, and broccoli (to overwinter and flower in the early, early spring).   These will go under a layer (maybe two) of floating row cover... if two, they will be kept separated by hoops, and a low tunnel plastic over the top when the first hard frost comes due... likely around Thanksgiving, give or take two weeks.  Hopefully by that time there will be enough growth that they can overwinter nicely, and I can harvest fresh veggies throughout most of the winter (after the temps rise above freezing).    This will be the first year trying to overwinter things like this.  But, since it's basically just costing pennies compared to buying fresh at that time of the year to use the garden and start from seeds... its worth the experiment.  And I will be running the pruned and overwintering pepper plants experiment as well.  (These will get a nice blanket of straw around them, held in place by a small tomato cage and covered with a row cover... all under the larger row covers and low tunnel) I've read its harder to do with the sweets, but they are our preference.   So, if even only one manages to survive, that's a major victory for me and a boon of bigger, better, earlier peppers should follow the next summer.

Everything here is inside in peat containers except the hardy herbs that made it through the winter and have had their spring pruning and my onions.    I just cut the bottoms out of the peat containers and drop them in the soil.   Probably will be waiting until May to drop the sensitive herbs, peppers, tomatoes and tomatillos. I have large emergency exit slider windows in my basement with 6x3 window ledges that catch the morning sun and act like a miniature greenhouse that are perfect for starting my plants.
My neighbor grows lettuce and has a nice little electric fence, basically two wires at bunny low height and high height. to protect from rabbits and we share crops. There are actually six of us that share.  Plus one of my neighbors boyfriend (funny, calling an 81 year old that) works part time delivering fresh produce for a farm/orchard to grocers.  So we get fresh beets, beans, peas, strawberries, peaches, pears etc. from him all the time.  Real strawberries with flavor.  Nice thing living in this area is during picking season we have fresh fruit and corn.   Sure beats the shipped in stuff.
This year I am trying hanging strawberries and also seriously considering planting a couple blueberries.  We’ll see if I can beat the rabbits, tree rats and birds.  Rabbits won on in ground strawberries years ago and I gave up so this hanging method will be a test.
I am also planting asparagus.  Won’t be able to eat this year and limited harvest next year.  If it survives our winters, in three years I will have a good crop for at least a decade.  My mom’s patch lasted forever.  Occasionally she would add new plants to keep the patch going.  Never been sure of mid state winters so we will see how it goes.

Because the guaranteed money no longer can be divided by 5 once his contract is voided. Then the rest of Flacco’s guarantees get pushed onto the 2021 cap in the form of dead cap.

Makes sense. So basically it cost us 1,940,000 next season and keeps us under the cap this season.

Yep, that's how signing bonuses work.  You can spread them out forever, they immediately accelerate to the year they leave the roster.

Howie already shaved 46.5 million off the 2022 cap with all his restructures.  What's another 2 million at this point.

The league is such a qb driven league it's nuts, I miss the days if old when defenses could play defense and one could build an offense around a RB.

Now RBs go end of 1st or early second and most 1st round defensive picks are made with the thought of stopping the qb not the RB like back in the day

Would be nice if there were some balance instead of it being so skewed to one or the other but it is was it is .

The League hasn't been an RB centered game since the 50s.  QB has been the most important aspect of the game in the Super Bowl era.  The running teams that won in the 80s and 90s had dominant o-lines and a mixture of players at RB.  The exception was the Cowboys to the extent Emmitt Smith was their lead back.  It is not like he was some dynamic runner.  He was an efficient RB behind a dominant O-line.  The Giants and Redskins had decent RB's but their real strength on offense was the line play.

Yes. We’re wasting $2M or whatever next year on a backup QB who won’t be in the roster.

Holy crap they are playing sound bites from Flacco press conference.

He is saying he is going to compete for the starting job and completely dodged the question of if he will mentor Hurts.

Absolutely horrendous signing by Howie. This offseason from the start has been a so horrible from Roseman.  How the hell does Lurie not see any of this?

You guys are so weird.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few days, the Eagles signed a LB.

This is based on looking at the roster, recognizing that they have a desperate need to fill in some depth at LB and ST, and that the free agent period is open.

Don't worry, we have 73 million in cap room next year, oh wait, no we don't.

That's not what he said at all.  He said that he doesn't think of himself as competing for a starter but you always go out to do your best.  He also said that QBs always help to make each other better and that's part of what he would be doing.

That’s great bend and quickness at that size.  Wow.

I've heard great things about Martha Washington asparagus for disease, pest and cold tolerance.  My grandfather had that in his garden.   I've never taken the plunge with asparagus, but have been looking into it recently... a lot!   And I'm looking at a companion planting of strawberries with the asparagus.  Theoretically, the strawberries and asparagus have very similar needs, get along fine, and their roots primarily access nutrients from different levels of soil.  Strawberries primarily in the top 6 inches and the asparagus below.  So, if I do take that plunge, I'll be going with bare roots of both, and will plant them together.  And likely won't get anything until next year with the strawberries and not much until the following year with the asparagus.  Just thinking about where the best spot would be for them... and whether or not planting a tomato or three amongst that bed year to year would be worth it (supposedly, tomatoes help to repel asparagus beetles, while the asparagus as supposed to repel nematodes that harm tomatoes).   Lots and lots of decisions... and I am starting to run out of time for this decision for this year.

But, I also have issues with rabbits.  For the most part I've been able to keep them at bay with some plastic coded welded wire fencing around my garden.  (Also works to keep my foolish pup from digging in the garden.)  The electric fence idea is a good one.  I assume he's using a solar powered generator to electrify the fence?

I wish I had a little cooperative like that.  But, then again, it's nice to be 'the guy' that has some fresh veggies to hand out.  My next door neighbor is an avid salad lover, but never plants her own lettuce, because they spend a lot of time in NJ in the beach area during the nice weather.  So, I get the honor/pleasure of delivering lettuces (and other greens) on occasion to give her a special treat of lettuce when we are overrun.  (I also plant too much lettuce!!  But, it's so easy to do.)   This year I've put myself on a bit of a more restrictive diet to lose some lbs and try to just get back into better shape overall, reduce the GERD symptoms, etc.   (Down 7 lbs in just 3 weeks so far.)   And I will be eating a TON of my lettuce this year myself... because the prices at the grocery store for fresh greens are just insane!  And my local produce store usually has less attractive greens available.  But, I should be lettuce rich for the next 3 months easy with the cut and come again... baby beet greens, arugula, spinach, etc. mixed in.  And when the peas start to come on, their shoots and pods will make welcomed additions to add a little extra splash of flavor.  As will the baby beet roots, as I also heavily over sowed those, with the intention of thinning and eating them in salads as they get to roughly large marble size.

What used car salesman is handling the stop watch at this Penn St. pro day? No way those times are legit.

Most teams are borrowing from 2022. Flacco overreaction is laughable.

Who cares?  As long as it doesn’t hinder extending players they want to keep (it won’t) and filling holes, which should decrease if they hit on draft choices.  I would much rather see the team built through the draft and on rookie contracts.  Free agents and even some second contracts seem to be hit and miss.  Comp picks can really help to build a team too.

Wait until they learn how the US debt works.

We are wasting $34 million this year on Carson Wentz.  I'm OK if there might be $2 million for Flacco next year.

Howie doing Howie things.   But, it's all good, because now that he's cleared Wentz' contract off the books by taking the $35M dead hit this year, he can take a BIGGER hit on a lot of these other moves when the cap goes up again.   Who wants to spend money on the cap for players who will actually help you win games, when you can spend money on broken down players that offer little to nothing while they are on the team, and then cost even more after you decide its time to move on from them?   Howie is a cap genius.  He's playing 4D chess while everyone else is playing with Lincoln logs!

Meanwhile, just a year ago, the Jets signed Joe Flacco to a one year $1.5M deal, with ZERO dead money.
https://www.nfl.com/news/jets-add-qb-joe-flacco-to-back-up-sam-darnold   Included $3M in incentives.

By comparison, the Eagles have given Flacco $3.5M for one year, plus some incentives.  And if Howie hadn't gotten funny with the cap numbers and these voidable years... but just did it straight up, like the Jets... the cost would have been... (drum roll).... just over $1.5M.1100409839_ScreenShot2021-03-25at1_03_11PM.png.24dd2851276a328c47a91042b58c4062.png

Someone needs to explain to me how Howie is this supposed cap genius.   All he did was add extra cost to Flacco's contract, for zero impact in 2022 and beyond.  Why did the Eagles need to overpay for him, when he's another year older... and the Eagles, frankly, have about as much chance of being competitive next year as the Jets did this past season?   WHY?  If they missed out on Flacco, so be it.  Who cares?    What would have been the loss?  Just bring back Sudfeld for the minimum and call it a day.  After all, Sudfeld is "unstoppable".  And... he's younger and they've already invested so much into him.  Why bring in the broken down QB for extra cost?
