Has any other organization in the NHL traded away their top talent as much as the Flyers to only see them win cups in other cities?  Just off the top of my head and I know there are more:

Mark Recchi

Justin Williams

Rod Brind'Amour

Mike Richards

Jeff Carter

I've always considered the Flyers to be a well run organization but the more I look back the more I question what in the world they do.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Pivoting to the Eagles.  I cannot believe the secondary we are going to be going with this year.  It should be a huge story and it's hardly discussed.  Slay and then who?  James or Maddox on the outside?  With McCleod being hurt to start the season, who is the other safety?  Wallace?  Tons of questions on the defensive side, especially the back end.  Could get ugly.

McLeod says he intends to be ready Week 1 -- we shall see.  The fact the Eagles signed Anthony Harris to pair with him (and both are free safeties) suggests Gannon will employ a lot of 3-safety looks like he did in IND.  One would think the three will be Harris, McLeod, and K'Von Wallace (unless he gets beat out by Jacoby Stevens)

Gannon also likes tall, long-armed CB so Michael Jacquet might be the CB opposite Slay.  Maddox should slot in as the nickel CB on the inside, with Zech McPhearson backing him up in that role.

I would guess Slay and Jacquet at CB in all formations, McLeod and Harris in all formations, and the others will be interchangeable pieces.

The truth is that the Blog has mostly been a smaller community and we have always veered off topic.  Most in this group don’t venture to CVON or any other forums.  You are letting some newcomers police our group whereas even PE.com let things pretty much alone.   So PM the supposed offenders and look closely at the reporters.  Are they regular posters on the Blog or visitors?

It’s June.   We traditionally get a bit off topic with little Eagles to discuss. That includes talking about barbecue, the Civil War, economics and other topics including occasionally some current topics.  Many of us contributed to the funding of this board. That doesn’t give us license but it does show an interest in continuing a group that has been talking with each other for close to two decades    A little leniency is appropriate because we do tend to do some self moderation.  We also are known to PM each other.  Take greend’s advice.  If the post doesn’t interest you, scroll down.

BTW, what type of smoker do you prefer?

Here is my opinion on 3 possible levels of moderation depending on the severity of the issue. @Moderator6

1. Off topic discussion. Its going to happen. Let it happen. especially in the offseason. (no hockey talk allowed though).

2. Off topic discussion gets political. Fine. But if its getting a little carried away, verbal warning via PM. Not a real warning. No points.

3. It devolves to race baiting. If the race baiter gets reported, real warning/suspension/points.

There is no issue with off-topic posts (76ers, BBQ, summer plans, etc.)  I specifically noted politics.  We know it's a smaller community, that's what I said in my post as well.  We don't know who are noobs to the blog and who are regulars.  There are a lot of people in here reporting each other. We have and will continue to warn those for abusing the report function.  We only have this problem in this blog where 95% of reports come from.

We have already done everything you guys suggested and more in the past and it doesn't stop.  Part of the issue is that bloggers contribute to it either by responding to the trolls or getting into the political debates.  As I said, if it were a couple people that's easy.  But when 8-10 of you are replying with political posts, attacks and memes then we either need to clean house and warn/suspend all those people or you guys need to all decide together:  put some peer pressure on them.  Don't get into politics with them, tell them to stop it and/or report them and ignore the posts and go back on topic.  It will be easier to warn/suspend those who are the instigators if the rest aren't contributing as well.

Again. No one would predict that he would shrink at the extent he did.  Taking no shots in the 4th in what, the last 4 games?  Passing up an open dunk?   No one has seen that level of cowardice before.  Even for him, that’s bad.  Of course we all knew he would look like a fool at the FT line.  No one should be shocked at that.

What do you think 4 vs 5 means?   It means that he would try to hide himself on the offensive end of the court.

Yea, I'm sure if we dug in and did the research we could easily come up with a list of 15-20 players.

Recchi didn't win a cup after he was traded.  He won one before he came to the Flyers. He then won a Cup with Carolina but that was him being traded there by Pittsburgh.  Williams was traded for Markov and that was a mistake as Markov wasn't a real help getting the team to the Cup.  Lindros sleeping with Rod's wife, who he later divorced, was the reason for his trade.  It was a bad trade for the team.  Primeau was ok but never lived up to his hype and Brind'amour was a better player.  Mike Richards won a Cup but Simmonds was a better player.  Carter was traded to Columbus who traded him to the Kings.  So I don't know if that counts.  Arguably, they got better players back in Couturier and Voracek but that trade probably was a mistake.  I think the bigger issue has been the inability to find a goaltender and consistent defense.

The 5 players for Lindros would have probably won a cup but they still would have needed a goal tender.  Remember Colorado didn't win until after they traded for Roy.  You just have to wonder what would have happened if the Flyers had made that trade for Roy.  It wasn't like it took a lot.

Correct.  They have multiple issues, but having their second most expensive player being a massive liability at the most important part of games at the most important part of the season is a starting place.   You cannot afford to have a guy making that much money who cannot be trusted to be on the court down the stretch of games in the playoffs.   That's when your superstars are supposed to step up, not sit on the pine.   Frankly, I'd rather see Maxey in those spots, because he can create his own shot, can shoot foul shots, and can handle the pressure of the moment.  Meanwhile, Ben looked scared of the moment... not taking the dunk was completely inexcusable, giving the ball away at mid court so frequently on the fast break indicated a fear of being fouled and being sent to the foul line... and the Hawks took fouls on him constantly to send him to the line to get quick and easy stops whenever they needed them and could steal possessions from the Sixers when they were leading.

Simmons didn't handle the pressure, but plenty of Sixers withered too.   I was amazed at an NBA playoff team having, what I presume, to be so many missed shots and turnovers.  Are the Sixers really just a get it to Joel sort of team?  They also didn't manage the game well either

-he had some personal issues with his family which disrupted his game

-he was shooting with the wrong hand this whole time which made him reluctant to shoot. Make him a righty and he is a 20 point scorer

-he is only 24 and isn’t even close to his ceiling

then show them some videos of him making 8 out 10 corner 3’s in his summer edition hype video

Then try to fleece whatever team bites.

Sadly, Billy King is no longer a GM, so no one will fall for this.

They almost have to try and rebuild his value during the regular season when he can put up numbers during a time when no one is really trying and then try to move him at some point during the deadline.

If Morey can pull off a good trade prior to the season I'd be all for it but I'm basically resigned to the fact that Ben is going to be on the team to start the year at least.  I don't think the Philly crowds will be kind to him.  I just hope the team let's Embiid know behind the scenes that they will be moving him prior to the trade deadline.

Based on Embiid's post game comments, I don't think Ben can be back next year. Clearly Joel is done with him.

Of course.  But you start with the All-Stars and big salaries, because those are the ones that limit other options.

I didn't know this. Thought he just wanted to stay with the Lions

This was common knowledge out there that he wanted gone and retired because the Lions would not trade him. Same situation happened with Barry Sanders.

That part was one of the greatest trades in Flyers' history -- getting rid of a marshmallow like Jeff Carter and getting back two players, each by themselves much better than Carter.  As you said, Columbus traded Carter to LA -- that wasn't the Flyers' doing.

In the broader sense the problem with those two trades is that they were made (in large part) to free up cap room to sign Bryzgalov -- which was totally unnecessary, because they already had Bobrovsky on the team -- Laviolette was just never smart enough to use him or see his potential.

Yup. Bob had a rough second season and they got impatient and shipped him off, and now people want to do the same thing with Hart lol.

Ben was, well, unplayable really, but kept getting minutes.  Kork was horrible.  Not having Green turned out to be an issue.

Morey knows this but unless he gets a real PG and shooters around Embiid, including guys who can get their own shot,  Embiid will force a trade.

The offense was pathetic.  Who instructs the best low post player in the game to continually post up near the 3 point line play after play after play?  As bad as Ben was, Doc's coaching contributed to losing.  He was severely outclassed by McMillan.

It will now cost the Sixers multiple 1st round picks and a good young player to trade Ben and his contract.
