Hopkins isn't out muscling anyone he's just in the best position to get both hands on the ball.  It's not like he's shoving the coverage out of the way or ripping it away from the defenders.  I think this is exactly the type of catch Devonta should make based on his skill set.  He gets in better position to get the ball.

A lot of contact.  Would prefer a guy who is 42 pounds heavier in that situation.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Getting in position to get the ball is the issue.  The contact comes after he has his hands on the ball and none of it is that bad.  I think the concerns about his size relate to him getting pushed off routes in press man coverage.  I think those are legitimate concerns.  I think him fighting for a ball is probably not an issue unless it's a question of wrestling it away from a DB.  He's not going to be Megatron but I think he could be like OBJ without the boat parties during the playoffs.

Now I know you're lying.

Surprised me, too.

Just realizing that the Buccaneers have more SB than the Eagles and the Lightning have more Stanley Cups than the Flyers.  How did those 2 expansion franchises become dare I saw powerhouses?

Tom Brady helps but the Buccaneers, ever since the Warren Sapp days have for the most part been one of the best teams in the NFC.

Jones is 6'3" 220, Hopkins is 6'1" 212.  Smith is 6'0" 170.  Jones and Hopkins can out muscle guys for the ball, and can make contested catches at the peak.  Smith is not going to be able to do that.

You are never going to see Devonta Smith do this, EVER.

Why can't Devonta do that?  I don't see Hopkins tearing the ball out of anyone's hands.  Just him going up and getting the ball at its high point.  Devonta can absolutely do that.

They've had some down years but they've been consistently better than average at the very least.

Totally different catch.  He was not surrounded by bodies, and getting contact all the way through the catch.  He was behind the defense and had no body contact at the catch point.

No they have not. Before last year they hadn’t won a playoff game in 17 years.

Guess my memory is tainted by the last game at the Vet and the 60+ yard field goal.  I thought they've finished better than that.  Makes it even worse knowing they have 2 SB titles in that time frame.

Matt is purchasing all-22 and is putting out some good stuff.  I had thought we might steal Linderbaum on Day 3 but not on his value board.   Just really like him as a replacement for Kelce.

Ummmmm......pass

TE Dallas Goedert’s contract extension could look like a 4-year, $52M deal with roughly $30M in fully guaranteed salary.

This would put Goedert as the 2nd highest-paid tight end in the NFL, behind Travis Kelce.

If that's the case he better get plenty of targets and be a top 2-3 option on offense.

Did you happen to be in a coma between 2004 and 2020?

I must have been.  That statement was made with memories in my head and what I thought I knew.  Ignore that post.

I’d rather have him prove it first even if it means a million or two more per year next offseason

I understand that you have such a raging Howie Hate boner that it causes you to hate everything he does now including the draft pick of DeVonta Smith but don't be silly.  Physicality isn't what lead to that Hopkins catch, what lead to it was Hopkins elite level of concentration and hand eye coordination to go up and get ball like that.

But do you want examples of great DeVonta catches where he having body contact?  Well okay then.

2:44 in this video.

2:21 & 3:48 this video.

Also probably Julio Jones most famous and iconic catch came from the Super Bowl.

Look familiar from DeVonta Smith in the National Title game against Ohio?

No thanks.

Question for the blog, if you could choose a week 1 roster, would you pick the at the time 2013 roster or the presumed 2021 roster?

I hope everyone is having a good summer!

I've been spending a lot of time going back and watching classic NFL games from the 80s and 90s, I've been in a nostalgic mood. Things changed a lot of ways in the NFL, but not as much as you think as you age. The farther away you get from something, I guess you feel things changed much more than they did. I watched some classic Niners vs Cowboys playoff games, Niners vs Giants 1990 NFC Championship, some Bills games, and some other classic games including 95 Eagles/Lions.

There definitely weren't as many flags back then, but there were still a lot of ticky tack flags. I think everyone so far removed from old school NFL has it in their heads that because of all the flags now there never used to be any in comparison, and it isn't true. Watching some of these games, a lot of ticky tack roughing the passer calls, a lot like what you see today. Illegal hands to the face, which I honestly forgot was even a penalty back in the early 90's.

But the pace of the game was so much better without all the instant replay. I have to say that. There were some games where there were some flat out HORRENDOUS calls missed. Like clear drops that were ruled catches and with no challenges they couldn't do anything, but I honestly do wonder if the game would be better off without it because they would just flow so  much better without all the stoppages, and some bad calls are worth the sacrifice.

Offenses back then were still awesome to watch. Watching the Niners and Cowboys teams of old a lot of explosive plays and cool play designs. Watching offenses now and how offenses have advanced so much, I guess recency bias had me feel that if I went back and watched old games I'd be bored to tears with old offenses, but I wasn't. Even threw in some trick plays too.

This I forgot: in 1990 the Cowboys were supposed to have the #1 pick in the draft, but they lost it because they used their supplemental pick in 1989 on QB Steve Walsh. After taking Troy Aikman #1 overall. I was too young to remember the details back then, but does anyone remember why the F the Cowboys took two QBs in the first round in 1989? Imagine how much better they could've been than they were in the 90s if they had say Junior Seau on their team with that #1 overall pick that they lost out.

I miss Pat Summerall. His voice was so iconic. What I loved about him was he was very stoic and his voice just brought tension to the moment. He knew how to bring excitement without screaming at the top of his lungs. It was very subtle, but him and Madden were a great team.

Jimmy Johnson.  Walsh was Johnson’s QB with the Hurricanes and he drafted Walsh for insurance.  Aikman had balked twice at playing for Johnson in college; even though he had little choice in the NFL it still doesn’t ring like a marriage made in heaven.  Johnson played them both at QB in Year 1 and didn’t totally commit to Aikman until later on.  Once he did, he was able to flip Walsh to the Saints for a first, second, and third round pick.

Johnson had the pull to do it because he was hand-picked by Jerry to join him in DAL when he bought the team.  Bad news — he had to follow Tom Landry.  Good news — Jerry gave him carte-Blanche to govern the roster and try stuff like this.

Belichick is likely the only non-owner today with as much control over the roster.

Taken a bit of a break from constant football coverage during this dead time. Two Eagles thoughts remain as I catch up a bit.

1. So many high upside guys on this team who need great coaching. Seems like every skill position player on offense can either breakout or faceplant. Can't recall a season with so much unpredictability.

2. Really excited about the possibility of the injury situation turning around under this new staff. Could be a game changer.
